Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. They create a film (薄膜) over the eyes’ surface. This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection(感染).
Tears relieve stress, but we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions. They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe. “As children we were sometimes punished for shedding tears or expressing anger. As adults we still fear the consequences(结果) of showing emotions.”
Almost any emotion — good or bad, happy or sad — can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions. Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings. It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people who cry more freely.
When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they repress (抑制) the emotion. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says Professor Vera Diamond. Sometimes in therapy sessions, patients participate in crying exercises. They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing the emotion. Diamond says it’s best to cry in safe, private places, like under the bedcovers or in the car. That’s because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry.
In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It’s good to hold back tears during a tense business discussion. “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says. She suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical ways to deal with the problem.”
Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.
24.Crying can help you ________.
A.feel energetic B.release tension
C.reduce fear D.escape from reality
25.According to Vera Diamond, crying from time to time should be ________.
A.valued B.forgiven
C.avoided D.practiced
26.What are you expected to do in a tense business discussion
A.Control your tears.
B.Be brave to express your emotions.
C.Release your stress with tears.
D.Create a comfortable atmosphere.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.How to release stress.
B.The value of tears.
C.Ways to repress emotions in public.
D.How to express emotions.
I’m a college teacher and researcher. At 40 years old, I’d been writing essays (文章) for ten years. While I’d achieved small success landing unpaid bylines (署名行), most of my essays went ignored after I shot them off into the black hole of the Internet.
But writing is in my bones, and despite my frustration (沮丧), giving up didn’t seem like an option. I decided to go back to school. Last summer, I took a writing class with The New York Times bestselling author Susan Shapiro.
To my surprise, Shapiro’s course was not just an education in how to get your writing published. It was also an eight-week lesson on how to get over yourself. She told stories about how hard she’d worked to get her essays out into the world. She was always forthcoming (愿意提供信息的) about how much writing, rewriting, submitting (提交), and resubmitting she’d had to do. “The harder I work, the luckier I get,” she said.
For our last class, Shapiro encouraged us to write about our most embarrassing secret. I admitted how masks allowed me to fully enjoy the freedom from wondering what other people were thinking about the lower half of my face. Five weeks later, my essay, “I am insecure about my face. For me, masks are liberating”, was published in The Washington Post. It was my first piece published in the major media and the first time I’d been paid for my writing.
Five months after my piece was published, I landed a book deal. I am now officially a writer for children. My first novel, Jawbreaker, is set to be published in the spring of 2023.
After so much rejection, landing a book deal was something that I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to get over myself had changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals, and am no longer discouraged by rejection.
28.Why did the author feel disappointed
A.She was too old to be a writer. B.She didn’t get well paid for her writing.
C.Her writing was rejected by publishers. D.Her teacher didn’t think she could be a writer.
29.What did the author do to improve her writing
A.She attended a writing class.
B.She visited bestselling authors.
C.She studied successful writers’ works.
D.She went back to school for a higher degree in literature.
30.What did Shapiro ask the author to do in the end
A.Find the cause of her failure to be a published author.
B.Draw up a detailed publication plan for her first novel.
C.Share her secret of becoming a writer for children.
D.Get inspiration from her most awkward secret.
31.What can we learn from the author’s success
A.Good advice is beyond all price. B.Writing gives people confidence.
C.Education is the key to success. D.Perseverance pays off.
Fear is an emotion like others such as happiness, anger, hurt, sadness. We need emotions to process information we receive and decide how to respond. Being afraid of fast cars, for example, is something that might protect us from harm. Being afraid of the consequence of a choice may prevent us getting into trouble.
Fears in young children commonly center on certain animals like snakes or big dogs. Fears are caused often because of experiences or ideas expressed by others, and at times, the media. Many normal fears during the early years, like men with beards,or large dogs, disappear with age. Those relating to personal failure and ridicule(嘲笑) from others remain through adulthood and may need special help to overcome.
Children’s fears are often small, but that doesn’t mean they should be dismissed as trivial. They need to be recognized and accepted as real for that child. Only when we help children understand their fears can they grow normally in their ability to settle them.
Research shows that as a child grows up, the center of his fears changes a lot.Things like divorce, a teacher who “shouted at me”, people with guns, bullies, big boys, or “making fun of me” top the list of childhood fears.
We cannot always prevent these experiences from happening, but it is essential that children be allowed to freely express their emotions without judgment. Sympathy and a caring listener will help ease pain of these fears. Read books and stories to your child about children who have experienced similar fears. This helps children talk about their fears and find ways to cope. With all emotions, fears become less of a problem for children as they gain self-confidence and they find that fear is normal and can be dealt with.
32.According to Paragraph 2, we can know that fears in young children ________.
A.only center on frightening animals B.can make sure of their safety
C.are not born but learned D.need special help to deal with
33.The underlined word in Para.3 probably means ________.
A.abnormal B.unacceptable C.imaginary D.not worth considering
34.In dealing with children’s fears, the final goal of the parents is to ________.
A.develop children’s ability to treat their fears on their own
B.let children know about the nature of fear
C.create an environment where there is nothing to fear
D.stop unpleasant experiences happening to children
35.What’s the best title for this passage

Last Saturday was a bright day. After getting up, I started to jog in the park. When I came near the lake, I spotted a kid fishing with his dad.
At first I didn't notice the sign saying “No Fishing”, because it's too small. So I went up to stop them. They hadn't seen the sign either until I pointed it to them. The dad felt so sorry and packed up immediately. Then we waved goodbye to each other.
But what if other people didn't notice the sign I then went to the park management office and suggested making the sign larger and more obvious. The manager took my advice, for which I felt very happy/delighted. What a good Saturday!

Tears can spoil make-up, halt conversations, and cause a runny nose. They can leave you feeling embarrassed and drained of energy. However, crying is a universal fact of life, and tears are extremely beneficial. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. They form a film (薄膜) over the eyes’ surface. This film contains a substance that safeguards your eyes against infection(感染).
Tears alleviate stress, yet we often resist them for various reasons. “People are anxious about displaying their emotions. They fear that once they lose control, they’ll never regain it,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe. “As children, we were sometimes punished for shedding tears or expressing anger. As adults, we still dread the outcomes of showing emotions.”
Almost any emotion — positive or negative, joyful or sorrowful — can trigger tears. Crying is a means by which we release accumulated emotions. Tears assist you when you feel on the verge of exploding due to intense feelings. This might explain why people who are afraid to cry often have more heart attacks than those who cry more openly.
When some people become extremely stressed, they can’t cry. They may be experiencing shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they suppress the emotion. “Everyone has a need to cry,” says Professor Vera Diamond. Sometimes in therapy sessions, patients take part in crying exercises. They practice crying to become accustomed to expressing the emotion. Diamond says it’s best to cry in secure, private places, such as under bedcovers or in a car. That’s because many people feel uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they might be repressing their own need to cry.
In certain contexts, like at work, tears are not proper. It’s advisable to restrain tears during a tense business discussion. “But once you’re in a safe, private space, don’t just cry,” Diamond says. She recommends that you reenact the entire situation and be as loud and angry as you wish. It will make you feel better. “And,” she adds, “once your tears have released the stress, you can start thinking of rational ways to tackle the problem.”
Tears are a symbol of our capacity to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.

I’m a college teacher and researcher. At 40, I’d been writing essays (文章) for a decade. While I’d had some minor success with unpaid bylines (署名行), most of my essays were overlooked after I sent them into the vastness of the Internet.
But writing is deep-rooted in me, and despite my frustration (沮丧), giving up wasn’t an option. I decided to go back to school. Last summer, I took a writing class with The New York Times bestselling author Susan Shapiro.
To my surprise, Shapiro’s course wasn’t just about learning how to get your writing published. It was also an eight-week course on how to overcome self-doubt. She shared stories about how hard she’d worked to get her essays published. She was always willing to talk about how much writing, rewriting, submitting (提交), and resubmitting she’d had to do. “The harder I work, the luckier I get,” she said.
For our final class, Shapiro encouraged us to write about our most embarrassing secret. I confessed how masks let me fully enjoy the freedom from worrying about what other people thought about the lower half of my face. Five weeks later, my essay, “I am insecure about my face. For me, masks are liberating”, was published in The Washington Post. It was my first piece published in major media and the first time I’d been paid for my writing.
Five months after my piece was published, I got a book deal. I am now officially a children’s writer. My first novel, Jawbreaker, is scheduled to be published in the spring of 2023.
After so many rejections, getting a book deal was something I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to overcome self-doubt changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals and am no longer discouraged by rejection.

Our 13-year-old son won a local "Hoop Shooting" competition and got to join the regional one. On a Saturday morning, we drove to Green Bay, Wisconsin. We hoped this would be his 41 to get into the state championships.
Many good players came to the regional competition. My son waited 42 for his turn. After nearly an hour, he walked to the hoop. His first shot didn’t go in—it was a 43. We could see he felt sad, and his eyes showed frustration. He tried again, but the ball missed once more. Still, he kept going. Finally, he 44 to make a few shots and got 20 points.
When he left the hoop, he looked really disappointed. He was 45 that he didn’t make it—several players scored over 40 points, which was more than 46 his score. If he could decide, he would have left the game early and stayed in our hotel room. He might even have 47 himself for not playing better.
But we saw this as a chance to help him 48 this hard moment in life. First, we let him talk about his frustration. Then we shared our thoughts on the 49. We said, "We wouldn’t be here if you didn’t win the local competition. It’s okay to fail—50 fails sometimes. What’s great is you didn’t stop trying when shots missed."
After that, we 51 to watch the rest of the game. We cheered for other players and even laughed at some funny parts. It turned out to be a nice afternoon, even though we felt bad at first.
Life often gives us hard times. When you feel 52 by difficult things, don’t let them make you sad for long. As the old saying goes, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." It’s not about never failing—it’s about getting back up after you fall.
A few weeks later, my son talked about the competition again. He said, "I know I didn’t win, but I learned to keep trying." This made us proud. He also decided to practice more. Every weekend, he asks his dad to play basketball with him. He wants to get better for the next 53.
One day, he told me, "Next time, I’ll aim more carefully. I won’t give up even if I miss a lot." His words showed me he grew from this experience. It’s true that small failures can help us become 54 people.
So, if you face a hard time, remember: it’s not the end. Take a deep breath, ask for help if you need it, and keep going. You might be surprised at how much you can 55.

根据第一段最后一句“This film contains a substance that safeguards your eyes against infection”可知,眼泪形成的薄膜能保护眼睛免受感染,“safeguards...against”与选项B中的“protect...from”为同义表达,故答案为B。
第三段提到“Crying is a means by which we release accumulated emotions. Tears assist you when you feel on the verge of exploding due to intense feelings”,即哭泣是释放累积情绪的方式,而不敢哭的人无法释放这些情绪,由此可推断他们更容易患心脏病,故答案为B。
第二段首句“Tears alleviate stress, yet we often resist them for various reasons”中,“yet”表转折,后文讲述人们因害怕表露情绪而抗拒眼泪,结合常识可知眼泪应是对压力有积极作用,再结合选项,“alleviate”最可能意为“减轻、减少”,与“reduce”同义,故答案为C。
根据第一段最后一句“While I’d had some minor success with unpaid bylines, most of my essays were overlooked after I sent them into the vastness of the Internet”可知,作者在参加课程前,大部分文章发送到网上后都被忽略了,选项B与原文表述一致,故答案为B。
答案:A
根据最后一段“After so much rejection, landing a book deal was something that I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to get over myself had changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals, and am no longer discouraged by rejection.(在被拒绝了这么多次之后,我从未想过自己会有出书的机会。上了夏皮罗的课,学会了克服自我,这改变了我的生活。我继续设定出版目标,不再因被拒而气馁)”结合文章讲述了作者酷爱写作,但是却屡屡受挫。然而,作者没有选择放弃,她决定继续努力,参加了畅销书作家的写作课程,不断提升自己的写作能力。在老师的指点下,作者终于获得了成功,成为了一名儿童文学作家。由此可知,作者的故事告诉读者只要坚持不懈、永不放弃就一定会有回报。
