A Weekend Escape: More Than Just a Trip
For many American families, the weekend is not only a break from work and school; it is a precious window for bonding, exploring and recharging. According to a 2023 survey by the U.S. Travel Association, 68% of parents with children aged 614 believe that "short trips on weekends are as important as long summer vacations." The reasons go beyond simple fun.
First, weekend travel is affordable. A twoday road trip to a nearby state park can cost less than 150 dollars per person, including gas, food and a onenight hotel stay. Second, it is flexible. If sudden rain ruins the plan to hike, families can easily switch to an indoor science museum or a pottery workshop. Third, it creates a tradition. Laura Hernandez, a mother of two in Denver, told reporters, "Every Friday night we let the kids pick one destination within a threehour drive. They keep a 'weekend passport' and stamp it themselves. So far they have collected 42 stamps."
The trend has pushed cities to redesign their weekend offerings. Chicago's Navy Pier now opens a "Night Market" on Saturdays that combines street food, local bands and children's robotbuilding contests. In Austin, Texas, the public library hosts "sleepover story nights" where families read together in tents inside the library and wake up to a pancake breakfast. Even small towns are joining in. Hudson, New York, population 6,000, attracts 15,000 visitors every October weekend for its "Leafpeeping Festival," featuring hayrides, pumpkincarving lessons and outdoor movie screenings of classic fall films.
Experts warn, however, that the growing popularity of weekend tourism can also bring overcrowding and environmental stress. "We love the economic boost," says park ranger Mark Liu at the Great Smoky Mountains, "but we also ask visitors to stay on marked trails and carry out all trash." To balance enjoyment and protection, some destinations now issue "weekend passes" that limit the number of cars. Others encourage "voluntourism," in which families spend two hours picking up litter or planting trees in exchange for free parking and souvenirs.
Whether the goal is to see autumn leaves, to taste the best lobster roll in Maine, or simply to laugh together on a miniaturegolf course, Americans keep packing their overnight bags every Friday. As one nineyearold passport holder put it, "Weekends are tiny vacations, but the memories are huge."
21. What percentage of parents think weekend trips are as important as summer vacations
A. 42%. B. 50%. C. 68%. D. 86%.
22. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of weekend travel
A. It costs less money.
B. It can be planned at the last minute.
C. It helps create family traditions.
D. It allows children to miss school.
23. What special event does Hudson, NY hold every October weekend
A. A robotbuilding contest.
B. A Leafpeeping Festival.
C. A sleepover story night.
D. A night market with street food.
24. How do some destinations solve the problem of overcrowding
A. They raise ticket prices on Sundays.
B. They close the gates at noon.
C. They limit the number of cars.
D. They ask visitors to plant one tree each.
25. What is the best title for the passage
A. Tiny Bags, Huge Memories
B. The Death of Long Vacations
C. How to Save Money on Mondays

Paying It Forward
The idea of "paying it forward" means that when someone does something kind for you, instead of paying the person back, you do something kind for another person. The movement became famous in 2000 after a movie called Pay It Forward. But the idea is much older.
In the 1780s, Benjamin Franklin helped a young man start a business. He told the man not to return the money to him, but to lend it to someone else when he had the chance. "This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money," Franklin wrote.
Today, people all over the world take part in "Pay It Forward Day" on April 28. They buy coffee for strangers, leave books in public parks, or help neighbours repair houses. Scientists have found that one act of kindness can influence dozens of people. When we see someone help others, we are more likely to help, too.
Kindness spreads like circles on water. A small drop can reach farther than we imagine. So next time you receive a favour, don't pay it backpay it forward. You may start a chain that goes around the world.

Hawaiian Directions
Hawaii is made up of eight main islands. People living there seldom say "north, south, east or west". They use "mauka" (toward the mountain) and "makai" (toward the sea) instead. The islands are small and the mountains stand in the centre, so the system is clear: wherever you are, the mountain is one reference point and the sea is the opposite. A visitor once asked a policeman where his hotel was. The officer answered, "Go two blocks mauka, then one block makai." The visitor looked puzzled, but after a short walk he found the hotel easily. "It's like a compass written in nature," he said. Learning the local way of direction not only saves time but also brings you closer to the culture.
