B
Do you ever dream of doing nothing at all, lying on a grassland for a whole afternoon, just staring at the sky and listening to the silence It may sound like a lovely idea, but in fact we can find doing nothing at all—and no sleep—very hard to do.
In a famous study a few years ago at the University of Virginia, participants (参与者) were led one at a time into a completely empty room with no distractions (分心之物). They had no phone, no books, no screens—and they weren’t allowed to take a nap (打吨). Electrodes were fitted to their ankles and they were left alone for 15 minutes. It was a chance to kick back and relax for a short while.
So, how did it go Well, before being left alone, participants were shown how to press a computer key connected to a machine that gave an electric shock. You might think that having tried it once, no one would want to do it again. Wrong. In fact, 71% of the men and 25% of the women gave themselves at least one electric shock during their time alone—and one man shocked himself a shocking 190 times. It turns out that having nothing to do was so torturing (折磨人的) that many of the participants preferred to, in fact, torture themselves rather than put up with no distraction.
This experiment is an extreme (极端的) example, but we know from everyday life that people continuously choose to do things they don’t need to do and which are sometimes painful. Think of all of your friends who run 40 kilometers a time or set punishing rules at the gym. They go way beyond what is required for their health and fitness.
Michael Inzlicht from the University of Toronto calls this the paradox (悖论) of effort. Sometimes we take the easy way and do as little as we can get away with, but at other times we value situations more if we have to put in lots of effort. The joy of the effort gives us so much pleasure that we don’t take the short cut. We might spend hours on a difficult math problem instead of searching on an learning app to find out the solution.
During this difficult time, we can find that we are not born lazy. Indeed in a strange way we might find that doing less, and resting more, actually requires a lot more effort than one would think.
34.Why did the researchers do the experiment
A.To show that being alone is easier for women.
B.To suggest that men cannot stand being left alone.
C.To prove that having nothing to do at all is painful.
D.To test whether electric shocks do harm to people.
35.Which of the following can be regarded as “the paradox of effort”
A.Making a piece of furniture by hand.
B.Lying on the sofa and watching TV.
C.Warming up before running 40 kilometers.
D.Reaching the top of a mountain by using a lift.
36.What can we learn from this passage
A.We should keep ourselves busy to get pleasure in life.
B.We find joy in situations requiring plenty of hard work.
C.It’s important to do things that are effortful and difficult.
D.It’s possible for us to get pleasure from taking a short cut.

“Look! The community center is having an art competition,” said Grace. She was holding a flyer (传单).
Mrs. Simon read the flyer aloud. Everyone agreed they would like to enter the art competition. Mrs. Simon said, “Our classroom supply (供应) of art materials is low because it’s the end of the year. I’ll check with Mrs. Rice to see what she has.”
Mrs. Rice, the art teacher, didn’t have any art materials. “I won’t be getting a supply until next year,” she said. The whole class was upset. “How can we enter the art competition without art materials ” asked Grace. “Maybe we can raise the money. We could have a book sale,” suggested Hal.
“I don’t think there is time,” Mrs. Simon said.
“Let’s use the paper in the recycling bin.” Pablo offered an idea. He seldom spoke up, so everyone was surprised.
“Why would you use old paper ” Hal asked.
“To save trees and protect the Earth.” replied Pablo.
“We can also use this old string (线) and these wire hangers (铁丝衣架),” added Grace.
Now the class had to decide what to do with the materials. Pablo had another idea. “We can fold the paper into the cranes.” Mrs. Simon taught the children how to fold (折叠) a paper into cranes. Then everyone helped tie the cranes to a frame (架子) to make a mobile. On the day of the competition, the paper crane mobile hung in a large community center room. The huge space was crowded with art works. The crane mobile swayed (摇摆) gently as people walked past, and the paper cranes appeared to be softly flying.
The paper crane mobile turned out to be a big success and won the prize for the most creative use of materials. The whole class proudly accepted their prize. Grace said, “We made our art work, and we saved the Earth at the same time.”
37.Why did the class feel upset at the beginning of the story
A.Because no one would like to enter the competition.
B.Because they didn’t have enough art materials to use.
C.Because Mrs. Simon didn’t allow them to make any art.
D.Because community center couldn’t hold the competition.
38.How did they enter the art competition
A.By raising some money. B.By having a book sale.
C.By using some old materials. D.By using classroom supply.

jasmine
I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom (开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.
Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away.
In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.
Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.
40.Before she gave the jasmine away, the writer had it for ________.
A.one day B.one year C.two weeks D.two months
41.When the writer saw Mary’s jasmine, she felt ________.
A.unhappy B.amazed C.hopeful D.peaceful

五、任务型阅读(满分8分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
In today’s digital (数字的) age, video platforms like YouTube, iQIYI and bilibili all offer viewers the choices to watch content (内容) at different speeds, from the standard “normal” play up to “2X” or even faster.
Joel Jelen, a 55-year old, has been a fan of the fast-forward button for about 15 years, mainly for one type of content. “I often watch sports videos at double speed,” he shares. “I started doing this because I realized life is too short to sit through a football match from the beginning to the end.” What began as a work break habit has become a preferred way of relaxation for Jelen. “It’s very relaxing and a great break from my job. I get to catch all the key moments and action without spending hours upon hours.”
It’s true that packing more viewing into less time sounds effective. However, Zhang, a film reviewer, argues, “Many people make thoughtful choices about pacing, lighting, timing, and music to perfect their films. Speeding up can ruin (毁坏) the experience.” According to Zhang, if someone speeds up a movie while watching, their critique (评论) of the film cannot be valid (合理的).
Sometimes getting a quick overview and feeling a sense of achievement from consuming (消费) another piece of information seem to become more important. As a result, people speed up content to tick off “watched” or “listened to” from their to-do lists, instead of truly enjoying the movies and songs. However, people don’t realize that sped-up content sometimes destroy their patience with life. One Chinese Internet user said, “I found myself growing impatient with tasks like research for work or studying for exams, which can take hours, days, or even weeks. I’d think, ‘How can I speed this up ’ And that thought really scares me.”
We already live in a fast-paced society, yet we still try to speed it up in every aspect (方面). But at what cost Some things should remain unhurried, such as our appreciation (欣赏) for beauty and the value of hard work.
43.According to the passage, what do video platforms offer viewers
44.What kind of videos does Joel Jelen watch at double speed
45.How do people make their movies perfect
46.When you watch videos, would you like to watch at the normal speed or speed up the content Why would you like to do so (Please give two reasons.)

例文:
Problems are often around us. I had a problem with my new classmates two years ago. I couldn’t get on well with them, so I felt very upset.
I asked my teacher for help and she gave me some advice. I tried her advice. First I joined a club and met some new classmates. While we were having a break, we started to have some short conversations with each other. Then after taking part in some competitions, I bought some beautiful gifts for my classmates. This made them very happy. Gradually, we became good friends.
From the experience, I realized that the more we tried, the easier the problem became.
