Tea has delighted and fascinated the world for thousands of years.China first started exporting tea during the Ming Dynasty, and the drink has since come to lead humanity’s drinking habits far beyond Asia.It is the most widely consumed drink on Earth today, aside from water and coffee.China’s traditional tea-making was added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO in 2022.
The traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China consist of knowledge, skills and practices concerning the management of tea plantations, picking tea leaves, manual processing, drinking and sharing of tea.Since ancient times,Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea.Tea producers have developed six categories of tea:green, yellow, dark, white, oolong and black teas.Together with reprocessed teas, there are over 2,000 tea products in China.
Tea-related customs are not only found across the country, but also influence the rest of the world through the ancient Silk Road and trade routes.Tea is everywhere—in families,
workplaces, tea houses and restaurants. The practice of greeting guests and building relationships within families and among neighbours through tea-related activities is common.
In China, more than 40 registered national-level intangible cultural heritage entries are related to tea. There are over a hundred vocational colleges and universities that have set up majors in tea science or tea culture, resulting in several thousand graduates specialising in tea production and art every year.

With the arrival of the summer heat, the wave of culture-themed ice creams is sweeping across social media platforms in China.
Museums, scenic spots, amusement parks and even universities have once again rolled out their unique culture-themed ice creams these years. These ice creams are often tiny copies of famous landmarks or cultural relics (文物) that offer visitors a delight for the taste buds (味蕾).
The trend of culture-themed ice creams began in 2019 when the Old Summer Palace in Beijing was one of the first scenic spots in China to introduce lotus-shaped ice creams. It was inspired by that in 2017 eleven ancient lotus seeds were discovered in a pool at the Old Summer Palace.Six of these ancient lotus seeds bloomed in the summer of 2019.So to mark the occasion, the staff at the Old Summer Palace designed ice creams shaped like lotus flowers. These ice creams were widely loved by visitors, not only serving as a cold treat but also offering a unique way for visitors to connect with their cultural heritage.
To protect their cultural relics, many museums have put up signs banning photography or the use of a flash.However,culture-themed ice creams provide an alternative way for visitors to catch memories of their visit.Various flavours offer visitors a choice of colours and ingredients for the ice cream, which reflects the local characteristics and charm of these cold treats. It is also suggested by the museums that the visitors can take the carved ice cream bars home with them to use as bookmarks.
For many young people, taking photos of themselves standing alongside cultural landmarks is an artistic preference from their parents’ generation. To them,a selfie with a culture-themed ice cream is a much cooler way to show their travel experiences and bridge the gap between the modern life and distant historical relics.

Besides being one of the Twenty-four Solar Terms,Qingming is also known as Tomb Sweeping Day,when people honour their ancestors and deal with the feelings of losing loved ones.Qingming is the only Chinese public holiday that is also one of the Twenty-four Solar Terms.
Though the solar term Qingming was first recorded in the Western Han Dynasty,it was not until the Tang Dynasty that it was declared a national holiday to honour ancestors.People celebrate the festival with customs from another traditional Chinese festival,Hanshi, meaning “cold meal”,which falls two days before Tomb Sweeping Day.
On that day, families get together and visit their ancestors’ tombs. They have the tombs cleaned, replace withered flowers with fresh ones and place snacks, fruits and drinks to the ancestors.Special food is served on Tomb Sweeping Day.Qingtuan with sweet fillings is one of the most popular foods.Boiled eggs are also associated with Qingming, with some areas following the tradition of egg painting.
“Qingming shows the traditional Chinese value of honouring the dead,” says Zhang,a leader of the China Folklore Society.“We miss the dead family members. We show our respect to them, honour them and will always remember them.Though the celebrations of the particular festival have gone through many changes, the spirit of the festival never changes.”

In the scenic coastal city of Cornwall,Lizzi Larbalestier has become a beacon of hope for marine (海洋的) wildlife. As a committed volunteer for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR),her journey began with transforming her online platform that allows people to rent out their homes or accommodations to travellers into a temporary shelter for injured seals. This effort came as the result of the increasing incidents of marine animals suffering from human-related injuries and the lack of specialised care facilities in the region.
Recognising the urgent need for a more permanent solution,Lizzi, alongside her husband and a team of committed volunteers, established a fully equipped seal hospital. This facility has expanded its capacity and is prepared to recover around 100 seals annually. The hospital caters to a variety of cases: seals injured by boats or caught in fishing gear (用具),young pups separated from their mothers, and young seals weakened by poor nutrition. Each animal receives personalised care, ranging from basic first aid to extensive recovery programmes. After initial treatment, seals are often moved to larger recovery centres for further care before their release back into the wild.
Lizzi’s commitment to marine conservation extends beyond seal rescue. She is an active participant in environmental campaigns. Her tireless efforts were recognised when she received the Animal Action Award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare.Lizzi owes the success of BDMLR’s operations to the collective effort of all volunteers, emphasising the importance of teamwork in achieving their conservation goals.
The BDMLR team also reacts to emergencies involving other marine wildlife, like whales and dolphins.Lizzi recalls several successful operations, including the rescue of stranded (搁浅的) dolphins and a turtle that required specialised care.
Lizzi’s story is not just about rescuing marine animals. It’s a proof of the power of community involvement and the impact of individuals on environmental conservation.

In recent years, campaigners have encouraged us to buy local food. This reduces “food miles”,that is,the distance food travels from the producer to the shop owner. They reason that the higher the food miles, the more carbon emissions.
However, the real story is not as simple as that.In fact, imported food often has a lower carbon footprint than locally grown goods.Take apples, for example. The local apples the British buy in winter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses a lot of energy. In spring, therefore,it is more energy-saving to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season.Heating also uses a lot of energy, which is why growing tomatoes in heated greenhouses in the UK is less environmentally friendly than importing them from Spain, where the crop grows well in the local climate.
We must also take into account the type of transport.Transporting food by air creates more emissions. However, only a few goods are flown to the consumer country, and these are usually high-value,short-lived items which we cannot produce locally.Even then, these foods may not have a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food. For example, beans flown in from Kenya are grown in sunny fields using natural fertilisers, unlike in Britain, where we use oil-based fertilisers and machinery.
Also,a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket.Driving a long way to shop for food will neutralise (使无效) any environmental benefits of buying locally grown produce.Furthermore, choosing local over imported food can also badly affect people in developing countries. If they are unable to sell produce overseas, they will have less income.
Some supermarkets have been trying to raise awareness of food miles by labeling foods to show they have been imported by air.But the message this gives is too simple.Lots of different factors contribute to a food’s carbon footprint. And,even if we only buy local food which is currently in season, there are ethical (伦理的) problems. What’s more, our diets would be more limited.

A new study finds that bird species with extreme or uncommon combinations of traits (特征) face the highest risk of extinction. The study led by researchers at Imperial College London finds that the most unique birds on the planet are also the most threatened.Losing these species and the unique roles they play in the environment, such as seed spread, pollination and predation, could have negative impacts on the functioning of ecosystems.
The study analysed the extinction risk and physical traits, such as beak shape and wing length,of 99% of all living bird species, making it the most general study of its kind to date. The researchers found that in simulated scenarios (模拟场景) in which all threatened and near-threatened bird species became extinct, there would be a significantly greater reduction in the physical diversity among birds than in scenarios where extinctions were random (随机的).
Jarome Ali,a PhD candidate who completed the research at Imperial College London, said,“Our study shows that extinctions will most likely prune a large percentage of unique species from the bird family tree.Losing these unique species will mean a loss of the specialised roles that they play in ecosystems. If we do not take action to protect threatened species and prevent extinctions, the functioning of ecosystems will be thrown into disorder.”
In the study, the authors used a dataset of measurements collected from living birds and museum specimens about 10,000 bird species.Although the dataset used in the study was able to show that the most unique birds were also classified as threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species,it was unable to show what links uniqueness in birds to extinction risk.
Jarome Ali said,“One possibility is that highly specialised organisms are less able to adapt to a changing environment,in which case human impacts may directly threaten species with the most unusual ecological roles.More research is needed to dive deeper into the connection between unique traits and extinction risk.”

Rock climbing might seem extremely dangerous, but most climbers know what they’re doing.Over the years, climbers have developed knowledge and techniques that allow them to conquer rocks safely. There are different kinds of rock climbing. The two main categories are aid climbing and free climbing.Aid climbing uses equipment, such as screws inserted into rocks to help climbers pull themselves to the top.In free climbing, most climbers use equipment only to protect themselves from falling: they don’t use any tool to help them climb up the rock.In free climbing,it’s all about skill, strength and knowledge.
You might think that muscles are the most important factor in this extreme sport. Not so,says Jeremy Noris,a rock climber in the US.“You can’t muscle your way through climbing no matter how hard you try,”he says.More important factors are balance, coordination, and the ability to make your body tense, which help climbers pull themselves up.Noris also says that lower-body strength is actually more important than upper-body strength. One of the best climbers Noris can only do seven pull-ups,but he has no problems climbing up some of the most rugged rock faces around.
Although some climbers have mastered the sport, beginners are welcome.Start with bouldering,a kind of climbing without a rope that takes place on a rock three to five metres tall,so that falling won’t result in a serious injury.Believe me—it won’t seem that low when you are looking down from the top.

Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory.A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants—72 healthy male and female adults—were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised.Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately.Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer.Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning.I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.

The sun is about to set when we reach our destination, the home of a nomadic (游牧的) herder (牧民) family. My host,Batbayer, has a cheerful face, with deep wrinkles and a skin colour acquired from spending long hours working outdoors, giving him the look of a sailor from an Ernest Hemingway novel. We have pre-arranged our visit but travellers in Mongolia can drive up to pretty much any longer and feel welcomed to stay. You don’t knock on the door: when you approach a nomadic family,a customary greeting is to say a kindly “Hold your dog.”,even if you don’t see a dog.
We feast at the family home on one of the country’s most distinct and tasty dishes:
khorkhog,or mutton cooked using hot rocks. This dish is served with onions,a variety of berries, milk, and more plates of meat, all from the family’s own livestock (家畜).
Mongolia is home to one of the world’s few remaining truly nomadic cultures.About a fifth of the population are herders, and nomadism is complexly woven into the country’s spirit. But a modern life is catching up with the people on the grassland at a rapid speed. This is in large part what my book is about: an outsider’s exploration of a society undergoing modernisation while trying to hold fast to its deeply rooted traditional values.
Many of the livestock here, especially the more valuable breeds such as horses, camels and cattle, are implanted with microchips that can be monitored via satellite-based services.“I would like to use the Internet more because it’s fun and useful; but the animals like it here. This is a good place for them,” Batbayer says when I ask if better Internet connectivity might influence where to move his livestock next.“I would never choose that over the well-being of the animals.”

“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a casteller builder.Mama had breakfast ready.“Are you prepared for your moment of fame ” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry,and the bread got stuck as I swallowed.Taking a big swig of juice,I put on a smile.“I’m ready.” I would do well.I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that,I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell.I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year,I had been practising the climb.I was 20,and I must not be a coward (胆小鬼).So for the first time in a competition,I would help build the tower!
In town,I saw that the centre was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country.Hands sweating,I was waiting for our turn to compete.Mum came and patted me on the shoulder.“Have focus.Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon,too soon,it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms.Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid.Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (层).Another group of men would form the third tier. Then,a group of women, including Mum,started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

Then suddenly it was young men’s turn to make the last tier.Tightly gripping the clothes of those we were climbing over,we passed the first two tiers without difficulty.By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother’s shoulders,my foot slipped off and I slid down.Instinctively,I clutched Mum’s arm with all my might.Feeling the tower below swaying a bit,my heart began a crazy dance in my chest.“Stay focus!” Exclaimed a young man beside me.Sweat trickling down my face,I took a deep breath to calm myself.I could not be responsible for ruining our tower.I could not disgrace my parents or myself.I could not let my team down.
“Jordi.Easy!” My mother whispered the words.I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mum’s lap. This time,I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot,I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up.Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust,I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees.I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete.Whether or not we won this competition,I knew we had done what we had set out to do.With faith in each other and with focus on the task,we built our tower.Eventually,I became a casteller!

Peking Opera is a form of Chinese opera which arose in the late 18th century. It became quite popular in the mid-19th century and is now regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China. Major performance troupes are based in Beijing and Tianjin in the north, and Shanghai in the south. The art form has also been introduced to other countries such as the US and Japan, influencing the development of the opera there from some perspectives.
There are four major categories of roles in Peking Opera, and each category contains various subcategories. On the stage, the performers combine different skills together in one play, including singing, dancing, and combating in symbolic and suggestive movements. They also hold a variety of stylistic conventions that help audiences follow and understand the plot. The layers of meaning within each movement are expressed in time with the music. The melodies of Peking Opera can be divided into two main categories, namely xipi and erhuang. Melodies include arias (唱腔), fixed-tune melodies and percussion patterns. There are over thousands of works in the complete collection of Peking Opera, which are based on Chinese history, culture, folklore, and, increasingly, contemporary life. Many of them, however, are no longer performed on stage.
In recent years, there have been various reforms to Peking Opera in order to attract a wider young audience to the theatre. Such attempts include improving performance quality, adopting new performance elements, and performing new and original plays, and the outcome is quite promising.

China’s popular programme about ancient Chinese poetry has not only received a warm welcome from audiences for its cultural knowledge and ancient wisdom, but also become a stage and platform for cultural exchanges.
A girl from Cambodia appeared on one episode of the programme on China Central TV and shared her knowledge about China’s ancient poems. She said that China and Cambodia had an unbreakable bond of friendship and that she had been learning Chinese and ancient Chinese poems.
She noted that she hoped to learn some poems about friendship and recite them to her Chinese friends.During the show, she recited one of her favourite poems:“I live upstream and you downstream by Yangtze Blue.Day after day of you I think, but you are not in view.Although as one we drink, the water clear of River Blue.”
In her eyes, the poem written by Li Zhiyi, a poet of the Song Dynasty, expresses well the feeling of longing as Cambodia and China will always be good partners and good neighbours who “drink from the same river”.
Shan, a leader of the China Cultural Relics Academy, said that the ancient Chinese poetry programme is about not only the preservation of poetry, but also refreshing and boosting China’s fine traditional culture.Poems carry the emotional wisdom of the stages of past dynasties and the cultural mark of the Chinese nation. The programme perfectly combines the soul of poetry for thousands of years with modern beauty and shows the rich heritage of Chinese culture to the world.
