Starting high school is a big step for any teenager, for there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment, and you will experience many changes.
You will face entering a new school, making new friends in a new class, and getting to know new teachers. These teachers will usually have higher academic expectations than your middle school teachers. They want to help you get into college and they expect you to study harder and improve yourself in some aspects.
Although these are all big changes, they are nothing you can’t handle. There are many different useful resources to help you deal with any problem.Your teachers, parents and friends are there to help you transition (过渡) into this great new time in your life.If you don’t feel comfortable talking to any of these people, there are many helpful hotlines you can call to talk anonymously (匿名地).High school may be a time of change, but these changes should be for the better.
Your high school years are a great time in your life.To fully enjoy your high school experience, try to deal with the situations of your life with which you are not happy. If you are feeling pressured to do something you feel wrong, talk to a friend or parent to find a solution. If you are not succeeding academically, find a teacher or someone else to help you improve. If you feel isolated socially, try to join a school club or group to make new friends.
High school may seem rather difficult at first, but you will come to appreciate everything about your experience at last.

The day started very early at 7 am.I had my breakfast downstairs with my mum.She could tell that I was very nervous.Mum kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me.If they didn’t love me,Mum said to send them her way for a good talking to.I couldn’t stop laughing.

It’s time to go back to high school.Students are excited about the new beginning. But for many kids, the first day is more about friends than classes, and maybe with good reason. On that day,the teachers take attendance (考勤),hand out books, and describe the teaching plans. If a student hears the same things in seven classes, you can’t blame (责备) them for thinking it’s going to be another long year. When the high schoolers’ parents ask what they did in school,it’s pretty likely that the answer will be “Nothing”.
It doesn’t have to be this way.Kids always want exciting changes, and you can give them a taste of how appealing your courses will be.One English teacher asks students to write 77 words about what they want to get out of her class. Then she reads their responses out aloud. She keeps the responses until the last day of the school year. Finally she hands them back to the students so that they can see if they achieved what they wanted. After encouraging kids with a year-long game, she begins the English course.
On the first day of science,a teacher gives students 30 minutes to build something to improve people’s lives.A history teacher organises a debate on whether Swiss cheese is better than Cheddar. In math class, another teacher puts students in groups of three, and gives them six minutes to come up with as many answers as possible to the question,“What is math good for ”
The new class activities are part of our school’s wide movements to improve the first day of classes. Many teachers choose to use creative ways to encourage kids from Day One.And all students seem to enjoy the changes.Quite a few parents told me that their kids said,“I think English (or math or biology or Spanish) is going to be great!”

Gabriella’s family moved to the US when she was two years old.As a compound bilingual (双语使用者),Gabriella develops two linguistic codes at the same time, with a set of concepts, learning both English and Spanish. Her teenage brother,on the other hand, might be a coordinate bilingual, working with two sets of concepts, learning English in school,Spanish at home. Finally,Gabriella’s parents are likely to be subordinate bilinguals who learnt a second language by translating it into their mother tongue.
Regardless of accent and pronunciation, all types of bilingual people can become fully proficient in a language. It seems that the difference may not be apparent. But recently brain imaging technology has given a glimpse into how specific aspects of language learning affect the bilingual brain. It’s well known that the brain’s left hemisphere (半球) is in charge of logical processes, while the right hemisphere is more active in emotional and social ones.Language involves both types of functions.“Critical Period Theory” says children learn languages more easily because their developing brains let them use both hemispheres in language learning, while for most adults, language relies on one hemisphere, usually the left.
Before the 1960s,bilingualism was considered a handicap that slowed the children’s development by forcing them to spend too much energy distinguishing between languages. But a recent study did show that bilingualism may make you smarter. It does make your brain more complex, healthier, and more actively engaged, and even if you didn’t have the good fortune of learning a second language like a child,it’s never too late to do yourself a favour and make the linguistic leap from“Hello” to “Hola” “Bonjour” or “nihao” because when it comes to our brains,a little exercise can go a long way.

It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him.And he seemed to want to stay that way, too.
But a year ago when my relationship with my best friend and career took a hit,I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible.I was facing serious problems and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.In desperation,it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key,so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer,if he felt like it.
Two weeks later,it showed up in my inbox:a much-thought,three-page letter.Dad,a 68-year-old retired technologist, had carefully considered my message and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns”.
I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late.I cried because,in the midst of my own struggles his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end,it was so simple:I just had to hit “Send”.
Since then,we’ve had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough thing more manageable and the life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.

Why are certain people so memorable, while some fade from our memories in time
Several examples come to mind with my youngest son,Ken.He was always more comfortable around his dad’s friends than his own.He loved to spend time with them, fish with them, listen to their stories and just be with them.
He has experienced the loss of several really meaningful friendships over the past few years, and it has been very painful for him. One,Dr George, was a neighbour and fishing buddy who would call to see if Ken could go fishing with him.Dr George always said Ken was the son he never had and that he meant everything to him.He passed away very suddenly while fishing with all of his best buddies a few years ago.The huge hole that left in so many lives simply cannot be filled—for Ken it was immensely painful.
There was another fishing buddy of his dad’s,Frank, who was always fun to be around.Ken was very young then, but really enjoyed getting along with “the guys” when they were fishing.Frank and his family went to the Kens in the same week we did and the memory remains to this day.Cheerful and happy,he was able to laugh at himself and accept everyone’s abilities or lack of them, all qualities that impressed Ken so much.
When he became deadly ill,Ken drove from his home in North Carolina to Florida for an overnight visit. He passed away a short time later. The day after his funeral (葬礼),Frank came to Ken in a dream and asked if he would take care of his wife,Carol. To Ken this was very meaningful, and today they share a special bond that Frank somehow knew would be important to them both.
When you are raising children, you realise that some people become very important to them, draw them in,accept and respect them.It changes them.

Parrots are prey animals, which means that other predators (捕食者) in the wild, such as hawks or snakes, are looking to make them into a meal. This factor influences parrots’ behaviour in your house more than any other.
Parrots are most easily hurt when feeding on the ground.Membership in a group plays an important function in ensuring their safety and improving their chances of survival from attacks by predators. The most common predators of parrots include hawks, snakes, cats,
monkeys, and bats. Some predators make attacks only during the day while others hunt in the night.
As prey animals, parrots are constantly watching out for danger and they instinctively (本能地) react to risks.Their first choice is to take flight. However,if this is not possible, they will fight with their powerful beaks to defend themselves.
Because their biggest enemy is the hawk, parrots are especially reactive to quick movements from above and behind. For this reason,it is wise to avoid quick, sudden movements near your bird. This is a built-in reaction not subject to logic or reason.Simple and relatively harmless household objects can draw extreme fear responses from a bird. For example,a balloon may represent a hawk or a vacuum hose (吸尘器软管) may be the same as a snake in your bird’s mind.
As prey animals, parrots are often frightened by exposure to new household items or strangers. It is important to expose your bird to safe experiences and changes starting at a very young age to build flexibility and improve their adaptability.Variety in diet and toys, travel, and exposure to new people and places all help to make your bird more flexible and adaptable to changes.

Every kid loves dandelions (蒲公英).Blow on the soft white head and seeds fly everywhere.
Dandelion seeds can travel for miles before finally floating down and settling somewhere new.But without the help of children, the seeds still fly away and researchers discovered how the plants decide to spread.
Each seed is tied to about 100 short hairs, which are combined to form a parachute (降落伞)-like top to help the seeds move. When the seeds come unattached from the head of the flower, the parachute hairs catch a ride on the wind, carrying the seeds away.
“We noticed that the dandelion parachute is closed in foggy mornings but then open again when the sun is up during the day,” an expert says.“So we wanted to know how this closure of the parachute affects the flight.”
This hairy parachute closes when the air is humid (湿热的),which often means the wind is weak.In drier, windier conditions, dandelions widen their parachutes to better catch the wind so the seeds can fly freely.“The dandelion uses a group of hairs to increase air drag (空气阻力) and aid its flight,” the expert says.“Unlike insects or birds, they don’t need any energy input to fly a long distance—even hundreds of kilometres—they simply catch the wind.”
In their research, scientists have found the “decisions” that the plants make when to open and close.Researchers uncovered the parachutes open and close using something like an actuator,a device that changes energy and signals into movement. But this actuator doesn’t use any energy. The middle of the dandelion’s parachute is able to sense the amount of humidity by taking in water in the air.Using signals about humidity information, they either open their parachutes and fly off or they close them and stay where they are.

The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy,a dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”,when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge.According to a study published in a journal, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival.“In discussing climate change,we often focus on warming,” says a co-author of the study.“But the length and timing of seasons—like when winter ends and spring begins—are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change.”
The co-author and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the current green-up.They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes.“By contrary, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says an ornithologist at UCLA,“but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”
“Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats,”the co-author says.“This adds to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible.“It’s really important,if we can’t address climate change immediately,to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”

People today are not unfamiliar with terms such as “going eco-friendly” and “sustainable lifestyle”.However, there exists a group of sceptics (怀疑论者) who believe that going eco-friendly is merely a fad (一时的风尚).I disagree with this viewpoint.Going eco-friendly is not merely a fad and it does,in fact, change the beliefs and attitudes of people.
The long-term presence of environmental organisations shows the efforts that people have made towards going eco-friendly.Organisations such as World Wide Fund for Nature advocate people to go eco-friendly.The high involvement of the organisations and the participants is thus a strong indicator that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad but a trend that can last decades.
Another strong indicator is the emergence of sustainable products in many industries, such as organic produce and electric vehicles. The consumer demand, coupled with eco-conscious (有环保意识的)businesses,is behind the sharp increase in such products. This shows a shift in the beliefs and attitudes of people towards adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Thus,it seems quite certain that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad.
While some people who broadcast their eco-friendly practices are criticised for just hoping to project an eco-conscious image, there are a number of people who have been practising the zero-waste lifestyle for years. For those who have done so for years, and not mere days or months,it is indeed a commitment that can only come with a true change in beliefs and attitudes towards caring for the earth.
The call to save the earth looks set to stay. With the development of technology and the appearance of many platforms advocating going green, people are more willing to change their beliefs and attitudes when they can learn about and appreciate the positive impact of the work of different environmental organisations and individuals. It is hoped that these effects will go a long way in ensuring that our planet will remain a suitable place to live in.

I used to want to be a zookeeper, but after becoming a wildlife rescue worker,I found that this work is even more valuable than I thought. Not only can I help injured wild animals, but I can also facilitate their return to the wild.We make every effort to accomplish this goal:Hiding food under rocks and fallen leaves to simulate (模拟) a natural environment,or doing our best to maintain some distance from the animals and prevent them from bonding with humans.
I am often asked whether I feel sad when it’s time to release the animals — to tell you the truth,I’m always pretty willing to let them go.All of my efforts have been towards allowing them to return to the wild, and the wild is where they belong,so there’s no reason for reluctance on my part. But it is true that sometimes there is no way for an animal to go back to the wild,or to keep it from bonding with humans.
Last year,I rescued a light-vented bulbul (白头鹎).The bird, initially lacking feathers, recovered under our care.It was scheduled for release during its adolescent period, during which it’s relatively easy to socialise. But an injury to its flight feathers delayed its return to the wild. The bird imprinted on humans during the following two months, which was a critical cognitive (认知的) development period, leading it to return to us after being released.
When we engage in wildlife rescue,we have to teach animals how to maintain a high degree of caution around humans. If they become too trusting of humans,it is very likely that our success in releasing them will not depend solely on the animals or our work here, but rather on the attitude of humans towards them.If humans can maintain a respectful and non-intrusive (非侵入性的) attitude,it will not be a bad thing, and our release attempt could then be successful.

“Hey,bro. It’s embarrassing but at least that can start to heal and everyone moves forwards.”

It is said that most people have no more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However,on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.
Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on.People have very different opinions about this. Some people would value their friends more than family.Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this can lead to problems.
Because of these different definitions of friendship,it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer,or we may want to have more friends in our lives.Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships,or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city,we have to find ways to make new friends again.
This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us.We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore,we should not be too frightened of starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends. It is likely that they would like to get closer to us,too.Remember what people say:Strangers are friends we have not met yet.

Dusty,the Wonder Dog
When I was a kid,Uncle Nell and Aunt Frances, brought me a four-month-old puppy. She was half German shepherd, half collie. As her pink tongue tickled (挠痒) my face with wet licks,it was love at first hug.
My family named the puppy Dusty.Although I wanted to lay sole claim to her affection,in a family of seven kids,no one lays permanent claim to the family pet.
Dusty was our dog,not “my” dog.We soon realised that she had patience. My baby sister often transformed Dusty’s warm fur into a nap-time pillow—falling asleep on the rug.Like a protective mother,Dusty waited without moving until my sister woke.
Dusty doubled as a school crossing guard, too.Monday through Friday she’d walk us kids two blocks to St.Patrick’s Parochial, looking both ways to check for traffic before allowing us to cross the street. We’d wave goodbye as we entered the door, knowing Dusty would be waiting at the school door to claim us at the close of the school day.
Of all the contributions Dusty made to our family, one incident stands out far and above all others.Late one night Dusty rushed to my parents’ bedroom. She barked and barked. When she got no response,Dusty raced upstairs to my bedroom and my brothers’ bedroom and barked again and again. When she failed to fully wake us,she flew back down the steps and returned to my parents’ room. Finally, she got Mum’s attention.
“What are you doing,Dusty ” Mum snapped, still halfway in dreamland.Dusty persisted. Finally my mother gave in.“Okay, what is it ”
Dusty whined (哭嚷) and rushed out of Mum’s room.Thinking the dog needed to be let out to relieve herself,my mother followed Dusty to the front door.
When Mum opened the door to let her out,Dusty tore across the street, not stopping to do her business as my mother had assumed. Then she discovered what Dusty already knew.
