题组训练(限时40分钟 总分35分)
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共10分)
Most birds,in particular, exhibit some degree of patterns and colours.Australia’s zebra finch (斑胸草雀),for example, was so named because of the zebra-like black and white bars on its tail. But it also has many other colours and patterns, from a bright orange bill to fine white spots along its reddish-brown sides. It’s not uncommon to spot the bird in the drier parts of Australia.
We tend to suppose all individuals of that species have their spots and bars in the same places.Look closer yet we’ll see that the quantity and design of these patterns vary between individuals. And somehow a bird exhibits a more obvious feather variation.Occasionally,we see one that has larger than usual pale areas of feathers or,more rarely, has lost its normal patterning altogether.
Colouration and patterning in all animals are caused by a range of pigments (色素).
Melanin (黑色素) is responsible for blacks and browns, and a lack of this pigment can cause a partial or total loss of an individual’s dark patterning. The two main terms that describe these abnormalities are albinism and leucism. Both conditions are genetic and both can lead to a very similar physical appearance.Leucism, however, causes a lack of the pigment cells that produce melanin. But albinism causes the production of melanin to be reduced or absent.
Can we distinguish between the two conditions without the help of a cellular biologist Yes.Albino animals have fully unpigmented red eyes.Leucistic animals,on the other hand,
never completely lose pigment from the eye, although they can have blue eyes due to a partial loss of pigment.
Why don’t we see more albino or leucistic birds Because the lack of melanin reduces the strength and lastingness of the affected birds’ feathers, making them more easily broken.
Additionally, the birds’ vision and hearing are negatively affected, making them less able to hunt. The brighter feathers and lack of patterning also make them easier for attackers to see.

One sunny afternoon in the small town of Oakville,a young boy named Fern was playing soccer in his backyard. His little dog,Lucky, cheerfully ran around trying to catch the ball whenever Fern kicked it too far.The air was filled with laughter and barks, making it sound like a perfect day.
All of a sudden, the sky changed colour, turning dark gray.Fern noticed the wind picking up,and the trees began to shake wildly. He looked towards the horizon and saw a terrifying scene—a tornado (龙卷风) coming towards the town.
Fern fought against panic and grabbed Lucky quickly. He remembered what the TV weatherman had said,“If you meet a tornado, head for the storm cellar (地窖) immediately.” Lucky whined and struggled in Fern’s arms.“Steady, boy,” Fern said to Lucky.
As he reached the doorstep of the storm cellar,he thought of Mrs Smith, the elderly neighbour next door.Mrs Smith lived alone and moved slowly because of her leg problems.
Should he check on her But what could he do It seemed unlikely that she could make it to the storm cellar quickly enough.Plus,he wasn’t even sure if she wanted him around. She often scolded (训斥) him because his dog,Lucky, would mess up her flower gardens. But if there was a tornado...she didn’t have a basement or a storm cellar.Fern knew he couldn’t just leave her there.
“Sorry,Lucky.” He set the shaking dog on the steps in the storm cellar and shut the door.
Lucky would be scared there by himself, but he’d be safe.

A
A geographic magazine has conducted a survey of 3,500 people regarding travel styles and expectations of future vacations. The results showed an increased preference for slow and immersive (沉浸式的) trips that are sustainable and encourage rich connections with places and cultures.
The growing concept of “slow travel” keeps pace with the popular Slow Food Movement.
Rather than focusing on the schedule of a particular journey, slow travel advocates a change in the state of mind that brings emotional, cultural, and even physical benefits.Choosing a homestay in place of a hotel, exploring the history of an unfamiliar neighbourhood and travelling into the wilderness (荒野) are all examples of slow travel.Adding nature seems to boost the benefits even more.
A study from Stanford University has found that spending time in nature can reduce negative thought patterns, stress and depression. While this fact might ring true, not everyone is comfortable carrying a backpack and heading for the hills.Pack trips, however, make it easy.
The history of pack trips in the United States can date from the early 19th century, when explorers advanced west into the unexplored territory of the Rocky Mountains.Small strings of horses were employed to help lessen the burden of carrying heavy equipment and supplies across great distances.
Nowadays, pack trips continue to offer a travel experience that nods to the past, but instead of supporting adventures into unexplored country, they provide camping adventures in remote mountain locations with comfortable tents, solar showers and delicious meals along with four-legged transportation.
Days are spent exploring the beautiful landscapes, fishing in mountain lakes and watching wild animals. In the evening, dinner is cooked over campfires as the Milky Way prepares for an excellent nighttime show.In a world where the pace of daily life is ever faster and our interactions are increasingly virtual, pack trips offer a chance to slow down and reconnect with family, friends and nature.

Feeling a hug from each other via the Internet may be a possibility in the near future.A research team led by City University of Hong Kong developed a wireless, soft e-skin that can both detect and deliver the sense of touch, and form a touch network allowing one-to-multiuser interaction. It offers great potential for improving the distance touch communication.
While there are numerous devices in the market to simulate (模拟) the sense of touch in the virtual world, they provide only touch sensing or touch response. The uniqueness of the novel e-skin is that it can perform self-sensing and touch-reproducing functions on the same interface.
The e-skin is a 7 cm×10 cm,4.2 mm-thick device containing 16 flexible actuators (驱动器),a microcontroller unit,a Bluetooth module, and other electronics on a flexible circuit board. The actuator serves as the core part of the e-skin. Once the actuator is pressed and released by a force,a current is produced to provide electrical signals that are turned into digital signals by a converter (转换器) and then sent to another e-skin via Bluetooth. When the signals are received,a current is caused to reproduce the touch response on the receiver’s e-skin through mechanical vibrations (振动).The process can be reversed to deliver vibrations from the receiver’s e-skin to the corresponding actuator of the sender’s.
The e-skin can communicate with Bluetooth devices and send data through the Internet with smartphones and computers to perform long-distance touch, and to form a touch Internet of Things (IoT) system, where one-to-one and one-to-multiple touch delivery could be realised.
Friends and family in different places could use it to “feel” each other. This form of touch overcomes the limitations of space and greatly reduces the sense of distance in human communication.
Next, the research team will focus on practical applications for people with visual disability, who could wear the e-skin to gain remote directional guidance and read Braille messages.

Ⅱ.七选五(每题2.5分,共12.5分)
Happy, angry, amazed—these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we’re sending a message on our phones! That’s why many of us now add little pictures to our texts to brighten up someone’s mobile screen and we’re also using them as a quick way of telling someone how we’re feeling.1.
Emojis came from Japan in the late 1990s,as a non-verbal expression of emotion, which was a substitute for facial expression in face-to-face communication. It was once believed that emojis were just decorative, additional and unnecessary. After being introduced into the Unicode Standard in 2010,emojis have become popular and attracted the attention of many scholars.2. They show that there are four main motivations: information transmission,
conversation strategies,entertainment and efficiency.
Different styles of emojis can affect the circumstances under which they appear, which provides an angle for analysing the usages and functions of different emojis. It has been found that the emojis usually occur before or after a complete statement or question, and rarely appear in the middle of a sentence.3.
Researchers have found that when netizens communicate with casual acquaintances, the diversity and the preference of using emojis to express information are significantly lower than that of family members, close friends, classmates and colleagues.4. In contrast to it,the usage of emojis will be limited when they’re communicating with people who are more distant from each other.
5. People have not reached a common understanding of the same emoji;even there are significant differences. In task-based communication, people may prefer to use notional words to convey information clearly so as to avoid communication difficulties caused by different interpretations of emojis.
A.The emoji has its internal ambiguity of expression.
B.Emojis have become a vital tool for communication.
C.Emojis are named as the world’s fastest growing language.
D.There are many questionnaires about the reasons to use emojis.
E.People can choose more emojis when facing close relationships.
F.People also use them to show their enthusiasm and encouragement.
G.Besides,it is common to repeat emojis to express the intensity of emotions.

A grey-headed flying fox is back gliding through the night after life-saving surgery on a broken wing. The female flying fox’s wing was badly injured when it was twisted in a net placed over fruit trees in Geelong,Victoria. It was rescued and taken to Werribee Open Range Zoo’s veterinary hospital where it needed two operations to repair the wing.
Paul Eden, doctor of the hospital, said,“The flying fox was in a very serious condition when it arrived.” Flying foxes are highly dependent on their wings for many purposes. They can fly an astonishing 6,000 kilometres in a year to search for food and pollinate a wide range of plants. They also use their wings to help capture insects, regulate body temperature and attract other flying foxes during mating season. So,it was extremely important that we did everything we could to help this animal make a full recovery.Vets operated to remove some of the flying fox’s damaged wing tissue and also gave it antibiotics (抗生素) and pain relief medication.
Following the successful procedure, the flying fox was transferred to a wildlife carer to prepare it for release back into where it belonged.Dr Eden said,“It is very rewarding to see the flying fox recover fully and safely return home.” According to researchers from Werribee Open Range Zoo,flying foxes play a critical role in Australia’s ecosystem, not only for the survival of other native animals but also for humans. Our ecosystem would be dramatically different without flying foxes.
Dr Eden noted that there were some simple actions people could take to keep flying foxes safe, including reducing the risk of twisting by using nets with a size no bigger than 5 mm×5 mm when fully stretched over vegetable gardens or fruit trees.“If you encounter a flying fox that is sick or in distress, for the safety of everyone, don’t attempt to rescue the animal yourself.
Instead, contact the relevant departments that will send a trained officer to rescue the animal,” Dr Eden said.

A new study found some primates (灵长类) are leaving their tree homes and spending more time on the ground.Led by Timothy Eppley,PhD,scientists studied nearly 50 species of monkeys and lemurs (狐猴) to look at the reason behind these changes.
About 15 years ago,Eppley worked with southern bamboo lemurs, which were known to spend most of their days in the trees, feeding on bamboo leaves. However,he was surprised to find these lemurs were spending most time on the ground and had an incredibly diverse diet.
He wondered whether habitat reduction and limited food resource availability were driving them to move to the ground. This inspired him to begin this study.
He reached out to every researcher he could find who may have significant data on primates from Madagascar or the Americas, the two places with almost all tree-dwelling primates.
Eppley examined more than 150,000 hours of data observed on 32 monkey species and 15 lemur species at 68 sites. He found that they spent an average of only 2.5% of their time on the ground each month. But the findings showed some interesting differences.
“As habitats are degraded and the climate worsens, primates that are flexible enough to adapt because of their diverse diets or live in larger groups may be more likely to shift to life on the ground,”Eppley says.“However, other species that rely on fruit diets or live in small groups are less adaptable and are less willing to leave the trees. For these species,we will still need to enforce fast and effective conservation strategies to ensure their survival.”
Although moving to the ground has some advantages in certain situations, primates can face problems when they leave the trees. They can become victims of other animals and diseases.Besides, they will be faced with finding appropriate food resources on the ground, thus having a broad or flexible diet is important.Primates are important seed spreaders within their forest habitats. The loss of primates would lead to negative effects on the ecosystem.

Unit 1 Growing up
题组训练(限时35分钟 总分35分)
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共20分)
A
When I was a child, the new year’s activity for my family is dumpling-making,but it’s been years since I’ve last experienced the uniquely carefree comfort and connection I felt during moments. My family has changed a lot,and gatherings like these simply don’t come together with the same ease as they once did.
This year,I came home in the evening to a dark house with pieces missing.I noticed things that I wouldn’t have noticed before, like how my family slept earlier and got up later and how my dog had more trouble jumping up on my bed. After all,it’s easier to become blind to its subtle changes when you occupy it virtually every day of the year, and much harder when you must be exposed to months of accumulated changes all at once.
Personally, the most precious childhood privilege is not the free extra snacks from flight attendants, but the privilege of thinking of the people and relationships around you with a sense of permanence.I mean this in the sense that it escaped my eight-year-old brain to think about how my parents were aging as I did or about the sacrifices they made for me until suddenly,I was an adult as they were.
I’ll turn 20 in a couple of months,so I’ve been seized with a feeling of adulthood, which feels far stronger than the transition into legal adulthood at 18 ever felt.It seems as if the “teen” part of “19” keeps me attached to the same category as the one my newly 13-year-old self occupied, carrying with it a certain comfort in the social allowances made for the immaturity inherent (固有的) to youth. But marching into 20 is different.
I’d so desperately wanted to move away and get a taste of independence upon starting college, but now I know that such freedom comes with loss and responsibility. Now I start to understand the governance of a circularity (循环性) inherent to our lives and have a newfound appreciation for the things that remain the same.

(2024-2025学年全国九省10月联考)
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that you can’t step into the same river twice, for you aren’t the same person at each visit, and the water is ever flowing. It is a powerful way to represent the reality that everything is always changing.
Yet so many of us have difficulty adapting to change. We deny it,resist it or attempt to control it,the result of which is almost always some combination of stress, anxiety and burnout.
It doesn’t have to be that way.No doubt, change can,and often does, hurt. But with the right mindset,it can also be a force for growth. It’s not as if we have any choice in the matter.Like it or not, life is change. We’d be wise to shift our position from useless resistance to being in conversation with change instead.
A concept called allostasis can help.Developed in the late 1980s by Peter Sterling and Joseph Eyer, allostasis is defined as “stability through change”.In other words, the way to stay stable through the process of change is by changing,at least to some extent.
From neuroscience to pain science and psychology, allostasis has become the standard model for understanding change in the scientific community. The brain is at its best when it is constantly making new connections.Overcoming pain,be it physical or psychological,is not about resistance (which often worsens the experience) or trying to get back to where you were before a distressing event or situation. It’s about balancing acceptance with problem-solving and moving forward to a new normal.
Yet this concept is still little known to ordinary people and it is time to start practicing it now.Over the past few years, the river of change has been flowing mercilessly, and it shows no signs of letting up.Hardly a decade after the widespread adoption of social media,a new technology that may be far more powerful, artificial intelligence,is being widely used.
It’s like what our friend Heraclitus advised:Take part in change by focusing on what we can control and trying to let go of what we can’t.Our ability to work with these changes is directly related to our life satisfaction.

My legs were shaking,my heart pounding. As we neared the edge of the cliff (悬崖),I double-checked all my equipment to make sure it was secure.I felt anxious, and I was not eager for my turn as I waited in line with the members of my group.Fear rose from the pit of my stomach as I realised there was no one else to let in front of me.Slowly,I lowered myself to the edge of the nearly 200-foot cliff. My skin shook like a dozen earthquakes when I reached the person who hooked me to the belaying ropes, which kept me from falling. He hooked me up,and I slowly lowered myself over the edge of the cliff, breathed deeply, and went into a sitting position with both feet in front of me.I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and began to go down.
Panic took over as I reached a point where my feet could no longer touch the rocky wall. The wall was right there, fooling me.My feet made contact with the wall, causing me to turn around. As I slowly began to spin around an interesting thing happened;my panic disappeared suddenly. The beautiful view of the surrounding area overcame me.All the different-sized trees were evergreens, which seemed to blanket the hillside. The forest was filled with life as different types of animals raced across my field of vision. As I looked upwards the sky seemed to open up into a blue vastness.A sense of excitement overtook me.I’d been waiting for this moment, night and day,for one long month, and finally my dream became reality.I began to feel calmer and more relaxed.
As I finally neared the bottom of the cliff, there seemed to be less animal activity. When I looked up,the cliff did not seem so frightening. My feet were shaky when they finally touched the soft and muddy ground. My heart swelled with pride.Travelling on the muddy road,I began the long climb upwards.

Jim Johnson,a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland,Westhaven and Westover Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail.He knew all the kids and their pets by name;he carried in the groceries;he took note of unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that,Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns(草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now,the trust in local postal service lives on.In many communities, that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters—even the bills—appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades,Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day.Butch,a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before,he got into the jump seat and they were off.On the route,Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now,the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop,Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us.

In February 2022,I began learning Chinese.Almost a year later,I found myself in Beijing, the capital of China. Before coming here,I had attended Chinese classes, and I could sense my progress in the language, albeit modest. As you might expect, studying for just one year wasn’t sufficient to claim fluency, and to be honest,I’m not there yet.But full proficiency in the language is not necessary to immerse yourself in and enjoy many attractions of life in China.
The one thing that truly makes me feel comfortable and alleviates loneliness is making friends and engaging in conversation. At Tsinghua University, where I pursued my studies in China,I made friends with many Chinese young people and relished spending time with them,be it for meals or leisure activities.I’ve been delighted to sing Chinese songs with my friends.I felt that connecting with my Chinese peers through a shared passion, such as singing,
was incredibly enjoyable and beautiful. It transcended language barriers and fostered a sense of unity and joy that was truly special.
During breaks from study,I frequently embarked on solo journeys across China.Although I have experienced travelling on overnight trains for over 12 hours several times and explored unfamiliar cities,I never felt fearful or unwelcome as a foreigner.Chinese people are consistently warm and hospitable to foreigners, and willing to engage in conversation.
I once participated in community activities in Northwest China’s Gansu Province to gain a deeper understanding of China’s rural areas and contribute to the development of local communities and education. As a volunteer teacher at a local school,I shared contemporary and traditional culture of my country such as anime, architecture, music and languages with the students.
