In honor of Maple Street Community’s Food Week, Lila Mae decided to share a cooking video online, where Lila and her son Jax showed how to make one of their loved family dishes. She had no idea the video would go viral across local social media groups.
“Anyway, I am not a good cook,” Lila, 47, joked gently at the beginning of the video. “But fortunately, my son Jax is, so he’s going to walk us through making one of my favorite dishes.” In the video, Jax patiently prepared the dish in their cozy kitchen.
Some people praised the simple and tasty recipe the mother and son shared, while others paid more attention to Jax’s calm manners and friendly looks. Jax has attracted a lot of sweet attention since the video was first posted on December 2, 2024. In the comments, some fans playfully asked Lila where she had been hiding her talented, kind-looking son all these years.
After Lila received tons of heartfelt comments about how handsome Jax was, she and her son sat down for a casual interview with a local lifestyle blog. Though the sudden attention they had gotten from the cooking video was totally unexpected, Jax smiled and said that the comments gave him too much credit.
Now that the video of Lila and Jax has gone viral beyond their small community, he is getting a lot more attention but he is not mad at it at all. Even though the new focus doesn’t bother him, he has also reminded himself to take a gentle step back from it when things feel overwhelming.
“People like and pay attention to me. I love it. It’s fun,” Jax shared openly. “But it’s good to remember the meaningful things in life, like spending time with family, doing a lot of charity work with local food banks, working hard every day at my job, and just making a small, positive impact on people around me.”
24.What does the underlined phrase “go viral” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Disappear soon. B.Spread quickly.
C.Be made carefully. D.Be watched secretly.
25.What did the local people think of the video
A.They liked it a lot.
B.They felt it difficult.
C.They considered it boring.

26.What can we know about Jax
A.He hates the comments.
B.He works for a food bank.
C.He thinks highly of the video.
D.He is a down-to-earth person.
27.Which of the following may be the best title for the text
A.The Food Week Got Success
B.A Kind Cook Becomes a Star
C.People Like Learning Cooking
D.A Family Dish Attracts Many Fans
Now the world faces many extreme weather events, like wildfires in the USA and Europe that destroy forests, floods in India that damage homes, and very hot heat waves that make daily life hard. Many people feel time is running out and think we can’t solve big environmental problems. This helpless feeling even stops some from taking action. But there is hope: We’ve solved really hard environmental problems before.
One example is acid rain (酸雨), a top environmental problem in the 1990s. It was caused by burning coal, which makes a gas called sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫). Acid rain hurt ecosystems badly: It made forest leaves fall off, took nutrients from soil, and polluted rivers and lakes. What’s more, it crossed borders — smoke from the UK blew to Sweden, and from the US to Canada — so no country could solve it alone. But countries cooperated: They signed international agreements, set limits on power plant emission (排放), and started using less coal. Later, Europe’s sulfur dioxide emission dropped 84% and America’s 90%.
We also fixed the ozone (臭氧) hole. It was a tough problem too, as no single country caused all the harmful emissions. Only when many countries joined hands did things get better. After signing the Montreal Protocol, emissions of ozone-harming substances fell over 99%.
These successes give us key lessons for climate change. Cheap clean technologies help a lot. Solar and wind energy are much cheaper now than 10 years ago, and electric cars are more common — one in seven new cars sold worldwide is electric. Climate agreements need time to improve. The first goals are often too weak, but countries can raise them later.
Climate change is harder than past problems — it needs rebuilding energy, transport and food systems that support our modern world. But small changes are already happening. Yet progress could perhaps be quietly encouraged if we allow the lessons of past successes to guide our next steps.
28.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By giving examples. B.By explaining reasons.
C.By providing solutions. D.By showing findings.
29.What can we learn from fixing acid rain and the ozone hole
A.Laws should punish polluters.
B.Technology alone is enough.
C.Rich countries must pay more.
D.Working together is important.
30.What should we do to fight climate change according to the text
A.Learn from the past successes.
B.Stop burning coal immediately.
C.Follow the former agreements.
D.Wait for new inventions to appear.
31.In which part of a newspaper can you read the text
A.Education. B.Culture.
C.Business. D.Environment.
As the world’s population grows and farming space becomes more and more expensive, we are quickly running out of land to grow enough crops to feed everyone. For years, we have been told that the future of farming was vertical (垂直的), growing crops indoors in more space-efficient buildings. But this revolution has not yet come to pass, with currently only 30 hectares (公顷) of vertical farming space worldwide.
Now a new agricultural company based in San Francisco believes it has the answer to increasing this limited scale (规模). Using unique new 3D architecture that grows crops up to two stories high in huge towers, the company believes that it can change farming. The company says it can achieve 350 times more yield (产量) from the same amount of land compared to traditional farming, and it can carry out this model almost anywhere in the world. Its aim is to grow up to two million kilograms of leafy greens on an annual basis.
To start with the crop planting process, seeds are planted in trays using automated systems, and they are provided with an exact mix of nutrients to support the initial stage of the growing process. As the plants develop rapidly, the company has the ability to adjust the amount of light, nutrients, and water each individual plant receives, allowing it to control various aspects of the final product.
Once the plants reach a specific size, robot arms transplant them to the growing wall. The company’s indoor farm features vertical grow towers, along with LED lighting, water, and nutrient systems — all designed to grow produce in an efficient manner.
After the crops are fully grown, they are first picked and then sorted by using a high-tech sorting machine. This machine uses blue light to check the crops for damaged leaves, and only after this check are the crops sent off for packing.
32.What is the present situation of vertical farming
A.Small-scale. B.High-yield.
C.High-cost. D.Fast-expanding.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The challenge of the vertical farm.
B.The development of the new company.
C.The introduction of the vertical farm model.
D.The background of traditional farming’s yield.
34.Which word can best describe the company’s technology
A.Simple. B.Advanced.
C.Eco-friendly. D.Widespread.
35.What is the purpose of the machine mentioned in the last paragraph
A.To collect blue light.
B.To store damaged leaves.
C.To pack fully-grown crops.
D.To pick out acceptable crops.

Brenda lives in an apartment alone. Her son is abroad with his wife and kids. On Brenda’s birthday two years ago, her son gave her a car as a gift. However, last year, her eyesight began to get worse. At first, it was just a bit of blurriness (模糊) when she tried to recognize faces from a distance. But later, the situation gradually worsened and she found it harder and harder to see clearly. Therefore, the car had been sitting in the garage (车库) ever since.
One day, Brenda grasped her support cane (手杖) while trying to cross the road safely. She could hear many cars speeding past her. She was so frightened that she hoped someone would give her a hand.
Theodore observed Brenda from the supermarket’s parking lot, where he worked, shining people’s shoes for a living. At first, he thought Brenda was just afraid to cross the road. He didn’t know she was almost blind. “Hey, lady, watch out”, he shouted, waving at her. But Brenda didn’t hear him.
Anxious about what could happen, Theodore stormed onto the street. He grabbed Brenda’s hand and led her to the sidewalk.
“Thank you so much,” Brenda said, relieved to be safely on the sidewalk. She thought Theodore was a worker from the supermarket. “Could you help me with my shopping ” she asked hopefully. Theodore, though surprised, agreed. He helped her shop and carried them to the taxi.
Around the same time the following days, they met quite often at the parking lot. Theodore was glad to see Brenda and always helped her shop.
One day, as they walked to the taxi, Brenda asked, “How long have you been working for the supermarket ” Theodore hesitated, then explained, “No, ma’am. I just try to help when I can. I lost my business and had to sell my house. Now I shine shoes here to make ends meet.”

On Wednesday, the 8th of December 2021, more than 100 officials met in Los Angeles to celebrate the city’s 40 years of friendship with the Chinese city of Guangzhou. A similar celebration took place in Guangzhou on the 6th of December, with the opening of the Guangzhou-Los Angeles Friendship Garden. Los Angeles, on America’s West Coast, is the second largest city in the U. S., after New York City, on the East Coast, while Guangzhou is the capital of China’s southern Guangdong Province. The relationship between the two “sister cities” first began in 1981, shortly after the U. S. and China first began working together in 1979. The main idea of “sister cities” is to share goods and ideas with other cities around the world, and for the past four decades, Guangzhou and Los Angeles have been a great example of this. They have also worked together to support one another through difficult times and to fight climate change.
