Melissa Wolf’s clients come in all shapes and sizes. Some have two legs, and some have four. All of them need a second chance.
Wolf is the founder of UnChained, a nonprofit organization in northern California that pairs vulnerable young people with abandoned or abused dogs that have been rescued from shelters. The youth learn to train the dogs in basic skills and better prepare them for adoption.
UnChained, founded in 2011, was born from Wolf’s own passion and personal experiences. When she was in her early 20s and working for a nonprofit in Texas, she was shocked by the animal neglect (忽视) she witnessed in some areas.
“Our kids often share very similar stories to the dogs, and we bring that into our classes. Many of our kids have experienced risk factors that have led them to the lives where they are,” Wolf said. “They experience joy, anger, fear and loneliness. When young people in our program can understand that they may share a similar story with a dog in need, and help that dog on a path to success, it can transform how they see themselves and their future.”
The program fosters empathy, compassion, and responsibility as students train and build trust with their designated (认定的) dog. At the end of the eight weeks, there is a graduation ceremony where adopters, parents, and teachers gather to celebrate the young people and dogs alike. And students get to show guests what they’ve taught their dogs.
By establishing an emotional connection and teaching young people about a dog’s needs, Wolf says her team sees a change occur. It’s a win-win for both the young person and the animal.
“There is a lighting up of those children’s eyes and faces, and we start to see the magic that happens and our kids’ understanding that dogs experience feelings very similar to humans,” Wolf said.
24. What is the goal of the UnChained program
A. To provide legal aid for animals.
B. To train the youth to prepare dogs for adoption.
C. To offer job services to troubled teens.
D. To pair the youth with dogs for friendship.
25. Which of the following motivated Wolf to establish UnChained
A. Her career as a dog trainer.
B. A vision for a new pet adoption model.
C. A general passion for animal rights.
D. Her witness to neglected animals.
26. What do the youth do at the graduation ceremony
A. Say good-bye to their parents.
B. Present their academic progress.
C. Show their dog training results.
D. Meet with adoptive dog owners.
27. How does Wolf sound in the last paragraph
A. Encouraged and satisfied. B. Nervous and thrilled.
C. Appreciative and optimistic. D. Reflective and hopeful.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

Scientists have created a new tool that can know what you mean It works by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program to translate brain activity into words. Scientists say the program could help people who can’t speak because of a brain injury.
To record brain activity without surgery (外科手术) , scientists used an fMRI machine, which can record the activity of the brain as it happens. To translate these recordings into words, scientists used an AI tool called GPT-l that predicts which word is most likely to come next, based on the information that came before. Scientists first trained GPT-1 on lots of stories people had told about their lives. Next, they trained GPT-1 to make connections between brain scans and spoken words. The testing was done on three human volunteers. Each person spent sixteen hours in an fMRI machine listening to stories. The machine created pictures showing which parts of their brain were active. GPT-1 then used these recordings to make connections between the ideas in the stories and the brain activity of the listeners.
Then came the test. The scientists played a brand new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the people’s brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted were very similar to the words in the story that the people were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning.
For example, when a person was listening to a story about a person who didn’t have a driver’s license, the program came up with this, “She has not even started to learn to drive yet.”
The scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery. The system isn’t something that is available outside the lab today, mainly because of the size and cost of fMRI machines. But in the future, a similar method could help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or disease.
28. Why were the volunteers asked to listen to stories for 16 hours
A. To produce brain activity. B. To awaken their curiosity.
C. To predict the new stories. D. To remember the words.
29. Which of the following best describes the test result
A. Unexpected B. Successful. C. Discouraging. D. Difficult.
30. What can be learned about this AI program
A. It’ll be put on the market soon. B. It hasn’t been put to use.
C. It reduces users’ financial worry. D. It’ll make patients learn to talk.
31. What’s the best title for the text
A. The fMRI Machine Is Used for Brain Surgery
B. We Don’t Have to Worry About Brain Injury
C. GPT-l Lets Humans Speak from Their Heart
D. Scientists Train AI to Read Human Thoughts
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. B 31. D

The standard public health threats are all-too familiar: Smoking. High blood pressure. Cancer. But a new government advisory made headlines in 2023 by adding an unexpected major player. Loneliness, stated the report from Vivek Murthy, is a widely underrecognized U.S. health crisis. Lonely people, as Murthy’s report warns, run the same death-rate risk as people who smoke 15 cigarettes a day.
Maybe it’s hard to understand how a lack of companionship could be as threatening as an addiction. But humans are so biologically related to be social that isolation (孤独) causes surprising harm on our systems. People who lack social support have a 29 percent higher risk of heart disease, a 32 percent higher risk of stroke, and a 26 to 29 percent higher risk of premature death, according to the report.
Scientists now know that loneliness can cause many health problems. That may be because ancestral humans thrived in supportive communities—and anything less can set off a biochemical stress response. “Our brains function more efficiently when we are with others,” says Julianne.
Holt-Lunstad, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University. In multiple studies, the stress of aloneness has been linked to higher levels of inflammation (发炎) in the body. When this inflammation persists, the resulting cellular damage can lead to illnesses like Alzheimer’s.
Since loneliness is considered as a personal failure, it’s easy to assume people should just try to handle it on their own. But in reality, many of the factors that promote social isolation are structural ones. “It could be workplace policies that don’t allow flexibility to develop personal relationships,” Holt-Lunstad says. “It might be busy or unsafe streets that are barriers to getting to know your neighbors.”
The solutions Murthy and Holt-Lunstad propose aren’t all individual lifestyle changes. “We recommend investing in social public facilities to help build connections in communities,”Holt-Lunstad says. That could mean increasing support for civil centre like volunteer programs, redesigning public spaces to encourage gatherings, or changing digital spaces in ways that promote bonding.
32. Why does Murthy mention people who smoke heavily in the report
A. To introduce a health crisis. B. To show the harm of loneliness.
C. To reveal high death-rate of cancer. D. To discuss the difficulty of giving up smoking.
33. How does the author support the findings in paragraph 2
A. By listing health threats. B. By making comparisons.
C. By providing statistics. D. By analyzing biological features.
34. What does the underlined word “thrived” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. participated voluntarily B. lived healthily
C. remained stable D. got desperate
35. Which measure might Holt-Lunstad approve of as a solution
A. Setting up chat benches in parks.
B. Removing road barriers in busy streets.
C. Collecting users’ preference in digital spaces.
D. Investing in more public fire-fighting equipment.

Morgan Stanley forecasts that annual spending will rise to around $260bn by 2030, consistent with its pre-pandemic growth trend. ____40____ Owners increasingly see themselves as parents, not masters. “Pets have gone from the backyard to the living room to the bedroom,” says Loic Moutault, head of the pet division at Mars.

【答案】Ladies and Gentlemen,
I’m Li Hua, the Chinese delegate. It’s my great honor to deliver a speech on the topic of “Technology and the Environment”. In my opinion, technology has huge potential in promoting environmental protection and sustainable development.
I suggest that we should strengthen international cooperation in the research and development of green technology. Also, we can use technology platforms to raise public awareness. Moreover, it is necessary to adopt eco-friendly policies all over the world. As for the action plan, we could set up a global technology alliance for green innovations. We should also start educational campaigns by taking advantage of social media. And stricter environmental regulations should be enforced globally. Let’s make use of technology to create a greener and more sustainable future.
Thank you.

Neighbors teamed up to save orphaned puppies
Earlier one evening, Hannah’s police officer husband, Chace was in an abandoned apartment building in southwest Little Rock, Arkansas, to check out reports of possible trespassing (入侵). And that’s when he heard the muffled squeals (低沉的尖叫) of some adorable furry trespassers.
In the corner of a room, Chace counted 11 tiny puppies in blond, brindle (斑纹), and black. They appeared to be orphaned or abandoned, with no mama dog anywhere to be seen and no people in the area either. Chace just couldn’t leave them in the abandoned building. So he found a box and put them all in.
Chace first reached out to the local animal shelter to report that he had found a litter of puppies.
If anyone was looking for the little family they’d probably check with the shelter. But he didn’t leave the puppies there because the shelter was filled to capacity and didn’t have enough staff or resources to care for 11 needy new residents so young that they weren’t yet eating on their own. The puppies would need bottle-feeding every few hours to keep themselves alive.
Hannah and Chace decided to foster these puppies for now — but they didn’t expect there would be so much to be done, and they had never done anything like this before. After two days and nights of round-the-clock bottle-feeding, Hannah seemed to be desperate.
They’d need some reinforcements. So Hannah made a call to her sister, Natalie Shelton, the animal shelter staff person, asking her to share their furry burden. Apparently, that was far from enough. So Hannah posted her emergency online with photos of these puppies .
She had thought it would take like forever, but things went smoothly. Shortly after, Hannah received plenty of bottle-feeding supplies, food, and veterinary care. Texts were flying back and forth as Hannah began getting some responses to her mayday call (求救呼叫).
Para1. As more people stepped in, a neighborhood puppy care coalition (联盟) began to take shape.

As more people stepped in, a neighborhood puppy care coalition began to take shape. Hannah’s heartstrings were tugged when she saw so many people engaged in this trouble voluntarily. Bathing the very dirty puppies and treating them for fleas were no more pressure for the couple. And a lady who brought bottle-feeding supplies showed other volunteers how to feed. To make things simpler, the pups were divided into groups of two and three, being sent to other foster homes. people were persistent in calling shelters and veterinarians for advice. Grateful and relieved, Hannah and Chace were finally able to get some sleep. Eventually, with the coalition’s thoughtfully attending, all these puppies were finally got settled.
“How would you comment on puppy care coalition” the journalist interviewed Hannah after her story went viral online. “It was wonderful seeing this totally unstructured group come together to help the puppies, “said Hannah, with a heart full of appreciation .This could have been a completely overwhelming situation, but instead it succeeded because people were willing to volunteer time, work together, and support each other. None of this would have been possible without caring people willing to devote themselves to help the puppies. Just as the old saying goes, “It takes a village.”
