Task 2 Read the passage. What happened to dodos
However, in 1598, humans arrived. They cut down the trees and our lovely forest was gone. They hunted us because we were slow and couldn't fly. What's more, their pigs, cats and dogs ate our eggs. As a result, we soon died out.
So today we are standing in museums around the world. When you see us, please remember our sad story. The world is full of fantastic animals. Please try your best to help them. Make them as happy as a clam, not as dead as a dodo.

We lived on an island in the Indian Ocean. In the happy old days, there was plenty of food to eat. All the other animals were friendly. What a peaceful and safe life!

1、Why is the dodo “just a character” to some readers
This is because dodos died out and people won’t see them in nature.
2、What does “as dead as a dodo” mean
“As dead as a dodo” means completely dead.
3、Why does the writer use the two expressions at the end of the passage
The writer uses them to show strong happiness and sadness. The contrast (对比) makes the different feelings much stronger. What’s more, “as dead as a dodo” is to echo the title and call on us to protect animals in need.

(1) die out 灭绝;消失
不及物动词短语,后不接宾语,不能用于被动语态。

(2) die〔不及物动词〕消失;灭亡;死去,死亡过去式为 died, 现在分词

(1)actually〔副词〕实际上;事实上由“形容词 actual(真实的)+ -ly”构成。

4、In the happy old days, there was plenty of food to eat.
在过去快乐的日子里,有很多可以吃的食物。
(1) plenty of 大量;众多既可以修饰可数名词复数,也可以修饰不可数名
词,相当于a lot of lots of。
Plenty of students took part in the game.许多学生参加了这次比赛。
There is plenty of water in the river.这条河里有大量的水。
(2)动词不定式作后置定语此处to eat是动词不定式作后置定语,修饰food。
动词不定式(短语)常放在名词或代词之后,作后置定语。
She has lots of work to do in the morning.早上她有许多工作要做。
I need a pen to write with. 我需要一支钢笔写字。
