Answer the questions.
1 What does the title mean
It symbolizes Niu Yu's strength, resilience, and unbreakable spirit. Even after losing her leg, she remained tough like iron—facing challenges with courage and refusing to let her disability define her. It also references her artificial (metal) leg, turning what could be seen as a weakness into a symbol of power.
2 What does the expression "came out from the shadows" mean
It means Niu Yu gradually overcame her struggles with insecurity and shame. After the earthquake, she hid her artificial leg and felt uncomfortable under people's stares, as if living in emotional "shadows". With time and support, she stepped into confidence, stopped hiding, and embraced her true self.
3 What is the meaning of Nora Ephron's words
It means we should actively shape our own stories with courage and determination, rather than letting hardships define us negatively. Niu Yu embodies this by choosing resilience: instead of seeing herself as a victim of the earthquake, she became an inspiration to others.
As the writer Nora Ephron once said: “Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim."
Post reading
Think and share
1 What might be the reason for Niu Yu to stop hiding her leg
The key reason was likely her growing self-acceptance and desire to live freely.
2 What do you think is important for the survivors of
natural disasters to get back to their lives
Psychological support (counseling, community care) to process trauma and avoid long-term emotional scars.
Social acceptance to rebuild dignity—like Niu Yu, they shouldn't feel judged for their scars or losses.
Hope and purpose—whether through inspiring stories (like Niu Yu's), new goals, or helping others, finding meaning accelerates recovery.
Learning to think for question 2
A natural disaster can change a person's life in many ways. It's important to consider all the effects before giving your help.

A Heart-Warming Story
In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, devastated the Philippines. Among the survivors was Maria, a 9-year-old girl who lost her home and parents in the disaster.
For months, Maria lived in fear at a shelter, barely speaking. Then a volunteer teacher patiently taught her to express her feelings through drawing. The most touching moment came when Maria drew a picture of her family with the words, "They would want me to be happy." This breakthrough helped her begin healing.
Now 19, Maria studies social work and volunteers at disaster relief centers. "I want to help others like people helped me," she says. Her story shows that even after great loss, kindness and purpose can rebuild broken hearts.
