Susana and her husband Edward are new to the United States, and they are learning as they go. The couple left Colombia in August to move to Brookline, where they plan on living for two years while Susan studies at Harvard Medical School.
“The first month was hard for me because in Colombia we say hello to all the people on the streets. And sometimes, the people here don’t reply. So I told my mom that the people were probably not very friendly,” said Susana. “But I decided to get to know the culture and embrace (欣然接受) the new country that had opened its doors to me and my husband.”
That included learning more about this new holiday they kept hearing about: Thanksgiving.
Susana posted on the app, Nextdoor, explaining they wanted to spend the holiday with an American family. “Hey, we are a couple that is not from America. We want to know about Thanksgiving. We want to share the experience.” said Susana.
The result was over 200 invitations and responses from complete strangers. One of those came from Carol of Brookline, which was the offer that Susana and Edward chose to accept “she mentioned that she had a multi-generational (多代同堂的) family. So for me, it was amazing,” said Susana.
Carol shared the same excitement about being picked as the family they were spending the holiday with. “I said to her that I felt like I won the lottery (彩票) because she chose us and we got a chance to meet them,” said Carol. “She seemed so genuine (真诚的) in her reaching out, and I felt like we could respond and show her the good side of America.”
Susana’s uneasiness (不安) about her new environment changed after this experience “After my post for Thanksgiving, it completely changed,” said Susana “People are kind and loving. So it changed my mind completely.”

India’s first floating elementary school (小学), the Loktak Floating elementary School, has been built on Loktak Lake in Manipur. The school is located among the unique floating islands, or “phumdis”, of the largest freshwater lake in northeast India.
Loktak Lake, famous for its “phumdis”, is often referred to as the “lifeline of Manipur”. It holds cultural and environmental significance. It serves various important functions, including being a source of water for drinking, irrigation and hydropower (灌溉和水力发电), supporting the lives of fishermen in the surrounding region, as well as providing a unique habitat for the endangered Sangai deer in Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park.
The school, a wonderful example of sustainable (可持续的) architecture without architects, is strategically located on a small “phumdi” in the lake. Built using local building technology and materials such as thatch and bamboo, the school blends (融合) traditional design with modern features Despite its traditional appearance, the Loktak Floating Elementary School is equipped with solar electricity, computers, and Internet connectivity. Approachable only by boat, it serves as a center of education for children from nearby settlements on other floating islands or along the lake’s banks.
The establishment of the Loktak Floating Elementary School comes as a response to the significant dropout rate among children living in the Champu Khangpok floating villages. The recent removal of more than 700 floating houses by the Loktak Development Authority, in accordance with the Manipur Loktak Lake (Protection) Act 2006, caused the fishing community to lose their homes and disrupted the education of their children. Originally having 25 students and two community teachers, the school aims to address the educational needs of dropouts and uneducated adults in the region. Once proven successful, plans are in place for development.
The Loktak Floating Elementary School represents an important step toward ensuring education for disadvantaged communities suffering from environmental changes, setting an example for sustainable development in the region.

The wonderful multiple-award winning producer writer, and director Norman Lear, who is 100, was recently interviewed by a TV host, who asked him what advice he would give to younger people as a successful man. Without missing a beat, Lear said, “Learn to let things that bother you go.”
Those few words are some of the most powerful in the world. I know that if people could just learn to do it, murder and divorce rates would fall dramatically, and I would be out of a job.
Learning to let go of what bothers you is a dream for many people, each of us has our own personal demons (魔鬼)to fight. The big question is: how do you let go of them There is no one solution that works for everyone, because we’re all different. Psychotherapy (心理疗法)may help some people who hold on to negative thoughts, while others don’t respond to such treatments.
Even after you’ve worked on this, you may have to deal with the after effects of a traumatic (痛苦的)experience. It’s hard to forget, for example, that you lost your beloved dog. Truly letting go means not forgetting what happened but rather learning to live with it, because no one can completely forget their past and it’s no use avoiding the unfortunate past. But each day is a chance to start anew.
Elvira, an actress, was disturbed by PTSD, a mental disorder. Medication didn’t help. She got counseling from some good people and did her own work, but she would still wake up in a state of anxiety every morning. When we started working together, I asked her to imagine, as often as she could, that the discomfort she was feeling was the negativity leaving her body. Whenever a negative thought entered her mind, she would repeat this visualization exercise and would soon begin to feel okay again.
Learning to let go of things that bother you frees you from the feeling that you don’t deserve good things coming your way. It takes effort, but it’s worthwhile.
12. What advice did Norman Lear share with younger people
A. Being professional in various fields. B. Being enthusiastic about one’s life.
C. Having an optimistic attitude to bad things. D. Showing great love and caring for others.
13. What message is conveyed in Paragranh.3
A. Annoying dreams share certain similarities.
B. Strategies for letting go vary between individuals.
C. It’s necessary for us to let go of negative thoughts.
D. It’s useful for us to receive psychological treatments.
14. What may the author encourage those bothered by traumatic experiences to do
A. Avoid things related to past traumas.
B. Move onward together with bad memories.
C. Try to remember unpleasant experiences.
D. Mark the boundary between the present and the past.
15. What does the author try to explain by mentioning Elvira
A. The technique for battling against anxiety.
B. The process of having mental disorders.
C. The way that mental disorders affect people’s life.
D. The reason why actresses are likely to suffer mental disorders.
