Farmers have been placing magnets (磁铁) inside cows for years, a carefully adopted practice that may seem strange at first. While we might find it unusual as facts, this unique phenomenon makes us wonder, why exactly is this done
Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with “hardware disease”. Hardware disease occurs after an animal eats a metallic object that then lodges in the wall of the reticulum, the second stomach room in ruminant animals (反刍动物). This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants. Similar to the situation where a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly taking large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used for fencing, for instance.
Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s stomach. Farmers have adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming firmly in the animal’s tissue. These magnets, once positioned, remain within the animals throughout their lifespan, only being removed after death when the cows pass away or are processed for meat.
Moseley, a Veterinary Medicine professor, states in a hardware disease resource that the magnet gathers foreign metallic objects, reducing the risk of making a hole in the reticulum. Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a cow’s small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk quality.
24. Why are magnets used in cows
A. To better the milk quality.
B. To help them digest better.
C. To avoid hardware disease.
D. To change the way they eat.
25. What is the main reason for hardware disease in ruminant animals

A. To review the history of cow magnets.
B. To analyze magnetism’s effect on cow milk.
C. To question magnets’ effect on cattle health.
D. To explain hardware disease prevention in cattle.
27. What might the author continue talking about

Does an apple a day keep diseases away There has never been a clear answer agreeable to the whole medical profession. However, recent research may finally provide some insights.
A team of nine researchers based at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China gathered more than 200 apple-related medical studies from the past decades. They painstakingly dug into these studies and ultimately published their reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. This comprehensive study shows the width of medical reports addressing a wide range of health questions, winding up with a thought-provoking statement: “In conclusion, the effects of apples and apple derivatives (衍生物), like apple juice, on disease risk reduction are both challenging and encouraging.”
Apples appeal to diverse audiences, ranging from scientists to anyone with a genuine taste for apples. They offer both tantalization and mystery, even perhaps especially to scientists studying the complexities of the human brain. A research team in Belgium makes a connection to apples while discussing how “activities of daily living are difficult to perform in a lab or clinic”. This idea briefs the challenge of translating everyday experiences into scientific inquiry. Moreover, a specific Japanese study explains the complexities involved in apple-centric research. The study presents a photograph with the words, “A subject, lying in an fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) environment, performs a mock-peeling task while observing his hands, an apple, and a plastic knife model through a mirror.”
Though these studies reveal significant difficulties, they do not stop progress. “Chewing yellow apples,” an Iranian study published in 2021 suggests, “was discovered to be a more effective method in reducing dental diseases than chewing red apples or using toothbrushes.” This finding not only underlines the potential health benefits of apples but also invites further exploration into how various types of apples might contribute to overall well-being. The quest to answer whether an apple a day keeps diseases away continues, with each study adding another layer to our understanding of this beloved fruit.
28. How did the Tianjin University research team conduct their study
A By analyzing existing apple studies.
B. By using apples to treat health issues.
C. By gathering different apple varieties.
D. By performing experiments with apples.
29. What does the underlined word “tantalization” in paragraph 3 most likely imply
A. Charm. B. Puzzle.
C. Nutrition. D. Amazement.
30. What is the primary focus of paragraph 3
A. The medical benefits of apples.
B. The obstacles in apple research.
C. The challenge of studying daily activities.
D. The link between apples and brain function.
31. How does the author perceive current research on apples
A. Interesting but not practical.
B. Thorough and widely accepted.
C. Demanding but full of potential.
D. Innovative and highly effective.
D
It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones taking mathematics tests. A group of cognitive (认知的) scientists are training bees to perform simple addition and subtraction (减法).
For the experiment, the scientists lured individual bees with sugar water. “She flies back to the hive, gives it to the other bees, and two minutes later she’ll come back and do it again,” said Dyer, a scientist from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. They taught and tested 14 bees over the course of the experiment — one bee at a time.
To learn the rules, a bee first would be shown cards printed with a number of shapes in one of two colors: blue, if they were supposed to add one to the shapes on the card, or yellow, if they were meant to subtract one shape. Then, the bee would choose an answer to the problem by flying to one of two presented solutions. If it chose well, it found itself near a solution of delicious sugar water. If it chose poorly, however, it would be punished with a bad-tasting drink. The researchers found that each bee picked the correct answer in both addition and subtraction trials about 70 percent of the time.
Dyer said, “Problem-solving requires both long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory allows the bees to remember that blue and yellow equate to separate mathematical rules. Short-term memory lets them recall the actual numbers in a particular problem.”
“It is assumed that humans are very complex, and there’s a decreasing level of complexity going away from humans,” said Muth, an animal cognition researcher who wasn’t involved in this study. But in fact, complex awareness, like the mathematical problems solved by bees, can be made up of relatively simple components.
That doesn’t explain why bees might have evolved the ability to figure out mathematical problems, though. One possibility is that bees didn’t evolve to do addition and subtraction. They just evolved to be smart enough to figure it out.
Dyer said that observing a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a million neurons (神经元) learn a very complex task makes him think, “Wow, what can humans achieve ”
32. What task did the scientists set for the bees
A. Figuring out different shapes. B. Distinguishing blue from yellow.
C. Tasting water of two flavours. D. Learning simple mathematical rules.
33. What is implied about the bees’ memory in the study
A. It functions in a way similar to that of humans,
B It is enhanced by the consumption of sugar water.
C. It is capable of processing both rules and specifics.
D. It is mainly used for remembering visual patterns like colors.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Human potential can be limitless. B. Human brains deserve good study.
C. Humans must fully develop neurons. D. Humans are good at observation.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. New Insights into Brain Evolution
B. Rewards and Punishments in Learning
C. Learning Math: Smart Bees Pick Right Answers
D. Bee Brainpower: Tiny Insects Master Basic Math

On the farm I grew up, there was a red-brown female horse named Belle. To most people. Belle was a troublemaker and mean, but I knew she just needed gentle care. Surrounded by horses, I’d developed a deep love and understanding of them.
Belle was beautiful, strong and smart, but didn’t like people coming near her, and that made her a problem. I heard my dad say if she didn’t change, she might be sent away. The thought of losing her was unbearable. I knew I had to do something.
Early one morning, I went out to the barn secretly with apples and carrots for Belle. She looked at me with suspicion, showing her teeth, but I stayed calm and gave her an apple. She stared at it but kept her distance.
The next day, I did the same. By the third day, Belle didn’t show her teeth anymore. On the fourth day, she took the apple from my hand. By the fifth day, she let me touch her face. It was a small victory, but it was progress. I decided it was time to take the next step. I planned to show my father that Belle was not the dangerous horse everyone believed her to be and give her a chance to prove herself.
But when I tried, Dad said, “I told you to stay away from her! She’s dangerous! You won’t change her!” “No, she’s not,” I said quietly. “Watch.” I led Belle out to the paddock, and she was calm. Dad looked surprised, but he still told me to stay away from her and that he would sell her two weeks later.
My heart sank at the news, but I knew I couldn’t give up on Belle. So I asked my dad to give me some time, so that I could prove that Belle was special. After a short silence, my dad nodded his head, “Well, two weeks!”

The Grand Military Parade
On September 3rd, all students in our school watched the live broadcast of the grand military parade, which left us a profound impression.
In honor of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, the parade featured China’s advanced military equipment and highly disciplined troops, demonstrating the nation’s strength and commitment to global peace. It was not only a display of modern defense capabilities, but also a respect for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for freedom and justice during the war.
Watching the event, we felt an overwhelming sense of national pride and unity. It has inspired us to study harder to contribute to our country’s future development.
67. 参考范文
To help Belle present more changes, I decided to train her every day. Each morning, I would wake up early before school and spent time with her, feeding her treats and brushing her coat. Gradually, I introduced simple training, like walking in circles and responding to my voice commands. She was a quick learner; by the end of the first week, Belle moved gracefully, responded to my slightest cues, and even allowed me to ride bareback. My heart leapt with hope, knowing that Belle was proving herself to be a magnificent horse.
On the final day, I invited Dad to watch Belle’s show. I led Belle into the paddock, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. I began with the routines, and Belle performed perfectly. She followed my commands with the grace of a well-trained horse and even performed the tricks I’d taught her. When we finished, I turned to my dad, whose face lit up with visible admiration. “You’ve done wonders,” he said. “Belle deserves to stay.” A wave of joy washed over me. Belle proved herself, and I also proved that with patience and care, even the misunderstood horses could shine.
