Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines, left us onFebrurary 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China's way forward.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong province, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he entered Shanghai Jiao TongUniversity to study shipbuilding. The memories of the hard times of China under foreign attacks made him study hard. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1949, right after his graduation. In 1958, he was chosen to join the research team tasked with designing China's first nuclear submarine.
The challenges were overwhelming. Yet, Huang accepted it without hesitation. For the next three decades, Huang disappeared from the public life. He couldn't reveal his work even to his closest family. The team members didn't have any computers or digital calculator, so they used abacuses(算盘) and rulers to solve probelms. To ensure the right calculation results, they were divided into three groups to make the calculations at the same time. They faced numerous failures and moments of despair, but they never gave up.
In 1970, their hard work paid off. China's first nuclear submarine was successfully launched, making China the fifth country in the world to possess this technology. But Huang's name was kept secret until 1987 when he finally reunited with his 93-year-old mother.

If your day starts with a harsh alarm sound, you might want to rethink your wake-up routine.New research from the University of Virginia’ s School of Nursing suggests that the way you’ re waking up could be putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake —— like by a loud phone alarm —— can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. This happens when your body is suddenly shifted from sleep to wakefulness. And it was found to be 74% higher in participants who were awakened by an alarm after five hours of sleep compared to those who woke up naturally. And that's no small concern —— morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular(心血管的) risks, including stroke and heart attack.
The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic nervous system —— the same system that sets off the“fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds.
The good news There are better, healthier ways to greet the day. Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods —— and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin(褪黑激素) production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.
There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder, helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds—— like a song you can sing along with —— help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can linger for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day and your heart will thank you for it!
28. What physical symptoms can be caused by activating the sympathetic nervous system
A. Nervousness and tiredness. B. Slower heartbeat.
C. Improved sleep quality. D. Reduced melatonin levels.
29. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A. The dangers of using traditional alarm clocks.
B. The importance of getting enough sleep every night.
C. The introduction and benefits of gradual light alarms.
D. How melatonin affects our sleep quality.
30. What can be inferred from the research findings mentioned in the passage
A. People who wake up naturally never experience morning blood pressure surges.
B. Gradual waking methods may lower the risk of heart-related diseases.
C. Reducing melatonin production immediately improves cardiovascular health.
D. Loud alarms are the primary cause of strokes and heart attacks worldwide.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To persuade us to stop using alarms.
B. To criticize modern sleep habits.
C. To compare different types of alarm sounds.
D. To explain the dangers of sudden wake- up methods
D
Carved into the cliffs above the Dachuan River, the Mogao Caves, south- east of theDunhuang oasis, Gansu province, contain the largest, richest, and longest used treasure house ofBuddhist art in the world. How to Deal with Impossible People
Most people know someone who seems to make every situation a negative and unmanageable one. 36 , as they likely don't see a problem with their behavior. Here are tips to help you navigate interactions with these people.
Avoid getting defensive. Stay calm, and be aware that you will never win in an argument with impossible people —— they are referred to as“impossible” for a reason. In their mind, you are the problem. 37 . They' ve already decided that your opinion doesn't matter and your defence is a decorative evidence.
Adjust your strategy. 38 , so treat it like a game. Learn the impossible person's strategy, and develop counter strategies ahead of time. Eventually you' ll find what works and what doesn't, plus you' ll probably feel better as you realize you' re three steps ahead, outwitting(智胜)them at every turn. Just remember your ultimate goal is to help free yourself mentally, not become the person's master.
39 . Impossible people offer valuable life experiences. After dealing with them, you will be able to get along with most other people more easily. Try to keep perspective, and realize that what may seem crazy to you may be another person's only way of coping. Try to view these interactions as a way to build strengths such as flexibility, grace, and tolerance.
Watch out for picking up impossible people's characteristics. You tend to pick up on the behavior of those around you. For this reason, you could find yourself adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident. You may engage in the same illogical behavior in response to the impossible person. 40 .
A. Consider what you can learn
B. Accept the situation
C. Catch yourself when you start to do this
D. Sometimes you can't leave the situation
E. Pointing out that these people are difficult and demanding won't help
F. So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story
G. An impossible person is convinced that they have already made a mistake

Waking up, I looked at the overcast sky, thought a bit and then decided to go to work after all. This was two years ago, when I worked at a bank. As I travelled from my house, the rain kept advancing. I reached the office quite smoothly, but a few hours later, our phones started buzzing with news of flooding in various parts of the city.
Looking out of the window, my colleagues and I found that the steady drizzle(毛毛雨) had grown into a downpour. We got a bit nervous, since none of us in the city have forgotten its worst floods a decade ago.
At about 12:30 pm, after an alert from the city government, the bank let the staff leave early. Some colleagues, who had already left, called to say that they were stranded(被滞留的). The train services had been stalled(停止运转) and there were no other means of transport available either. A senior colleague, who happened to live in the same district, offered me a lift in his car. Iagreed happily, and so did other colleagues, since it would have been risky to walk into the driving rain.
The rain poured down continuously, with waist-high water soon on the road. In the midway, the rainwater reached our car's engine. We had no option but to park nearby. The first dry place we found was under a giant tree. We also spotted a tea stall nearby and got ourselves some much-needed tea and refreshments.
All along, I got phone calls from my wife and parents, who were tracking the flood situation on TV and anxious for me. We looked up weather updates on our mobile phones and got more and more tense—— home seemed far away. If it had not been for my portable(便携的)power bank, all our phones would have been dead.
Our train of thought was suddenly interrupted by a raised voice. We looked around and found a lady calling out from the balcony of a building behind us, “Please come in and make yourselves comfortable. How long will you stand out there ” She shouted out. We thanked her,but continued to wait.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After half an hour or so, I felt a touch on my shoulder.
We didn't want further favours, but the family seemed to sense our must to spend the night.

After half an hour or so, I felt a touch on my shoulder. The lady from the balcony came with her brother. They persuaded us to follow them. We were pleased to meet the family. We were offered tea and the use of their washroom. Grateful for everything, we assured them that we would leave as soon as the water went down. However, the family insisted that we have dinner that was being cooked for us.
We didn’t want further favours, but the family seemed to sense our must to spend the night. Despite our hesitation, they brought carpets and mats, spread them out and asked us to make ourselves comfortable. We were simply touched by their kindness. At about 4 am, the floodwaters finally started to go down. Extremely relieved at this, we started heading out. Not wanting to disturb our sleeping hosts, we quietly slipped a thank-you note under their door and left.

W: I guess so. But I also don’t speak Spanish. How am I supposed to enjoy my vacation when I can’t even communicate with anyone
M: I’m sure you could pick up a few words. Spanish is a pretty easy language to learn. I’ve only been taking it for a year and I can already have some simple conversations with people. But tons of people in Mexico speak English.
W: They do
M: Of course. Have you seen pictures of the beaches in Mexico
W: Uh, no…
M: Take a look at this. My cousin went to Cancun last summer vacation, and he had a great time.
W: Wow, those are some beautiful beaches. Maybe I would like Mexico after all.

Ritchie Valens is one of the most famous American rock and roll musicians from the 1950’s. He was born in Los Angeles, California to Mexican parents. When he was little, he taught himself to play the guitar, which he played for many years later. He was originally left-handed, but taught himself to play with his right. He also learned two other instruments. In 1958, someone heard his song Donna and helped him make his first record. One song, La Bamba, became an instant hit and is still considered one of the greatest songs of all time. Sadly, on February 3rd, 1959, Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash, along with two other famous musicians, Buddy Holly and J. P. Richardson. After a concert, some of the musicians decided to fly home. Unfortunately, there was only one small plane and not everyone could fit. J. P. Richardson was given a seat because he was sick. Ritchie Valens won a game with another musician, and Buddy Holly knew the pilot. That day is now remembered as “The Day the Music Died”. Another musician named Don McLean wrote a beautiful song for them called American Pie.
