The recommended sleep duration for adults is seven to nine hours a night, but many people often sleep for less than this.Research has shown that sleeping less than the recommended amount is linked to having greater body fat, and can also influence how easily you lose weight on a calorie-controlled diet. Typically, the goal for weight loss is usually to decrease body fat while retaining as much muscle mass as possible. Not obtaining the correct amount of sleep can determine how much fat is lost as well as how much muscle mass you retain while on a calorie restricted diet. One study found that sleeping 5.5 hours each night over a two-week period while on a calorie-restricted diet resulted in less fat loss when compared to sleeping 8.5 hours each night. But it also resulted in a greater loss of fat-free mass (including muscle). There are several reasons why shorter sleep may be associated with higher body weight and affect weight loss. These include changes in appetite and food selection. Sleep influences two important appetite hormones (荷尔蒙) in our body — leptin and ghrelin. The former decreases appetite, while the latter increases appetite. One study found that short sleep was associated with higher levels of ghrelin and lower levels of leptin. Along with changes in appetite hormones, reduced sleep has also been shown to impact on food selection.Researchers have found that the areas of the brain responsible for reward are more active in response to food after sleep loss (six nights of only four hours’ sleep) when compared to people who had good sleep (six nights of nine hours’ sleep). This could possibly explain why sleep-deprived people snack more often and tend to choose carbohydrate-rich foods and sweet-tasting snacks, compared to those who get enough sleep.1.What is often ignored by us according to the author?( )A.The role of sleep.B.The role of exercise.C.The necessity of losing weight.D.The necessity of going on a diet.2.What will probably happen to us if we don’t get enough sleep?( )A.We’ll gain some weight.B.We’ll lose some weight.C.We’ll increase our muscle.D.We’ll get some fat-free mass.3.What will people tend to do after sleep loss?( )A.Take more exercise.B.Eat unhealthy foods.C.Choose healthy foods.D.Change sleeping habits.B The British poet Matthew Byrne moved to Beijing in 2013 and felt that the capital city’s poetry scene was lacking. His obsession (痴迷) for starting poetry events led to the foundation of the Spittoon Collective in May 2015.“At that time, the literary activity in Beijing was The Bookworm based in Sanlitun,” Byrne says. While some of Beijing’s literary institutions would go on to close in the fall of 2019,Spittoon would continue to grow as a community for poets and writers, as well as musicians and others in the creative scene.Byrne describes the Spittoon Collective as a platform for people to share ideas, from literary works to different forms of art, with projects developing from the creative energy within the community.Spittoon originally started as a poetry night at the Mado Bar in Dongcheng District’s Baochao Hutong.Byrne says,“In Beijing, you have these wonderful hutongs, ancient structures where you can walk down and visit cool bars, so I thought it would be good to have a poetry event as it seemed like poetry belonged naturally to this area.”He adds,“The objective now is to discover Chinese voices and broadcast them to the rest of the world. We create a kind of theme park-like atmosphere where every Thursday is occupied by a different literary style or art form.”The readings would mainly be in English, but with an international community, a new section called“Poetry-in-Translation” was started, which featured works in Chinese, French, Arabic, Russian, Spanish and other languages.Joining organised activities like Spittoon can be a major help for those caught up in a boring life. And it’s especially important for the people who have moved to China as they need to build new relationships while living in a different country.4.What can we know about the Spittoon Collective? ( )A.It was closed in 2019.B.It was set up in 2013 in Beijing.C.It’s popular with literature lovers.D.It’s a community just for foreigners.5.Why did Byrne start the Spittoon Collective in Baochao Hutong? ( )A.To attract students’ love of poetry.B.To expand China’s literature globally.C.To make Beijing’s hutongs famous.D.To combine poetry with the hutong.6.What effect would the Spittoon Collective have on Chinese culture? ( )A.Beneficial. B.Negative.C.Challenging. D.Controversial.7.What is the author’s attitude to the Spittoon Collective? ( )A.Unclear. B.Negative.C.Doubtful. D.Favourable.C Life is full of ups and downs. However, it’s not what happens to us in life but how we respond to each situation that matters. I remember a major setback of my own. Two years after I had become the starting quarterback (四分卫) in college, I seriously injured my knee, had an operation, fell behind, and then lost my position. Our coach called me into his office just before the season began and told me they were handing the starting job to someone else. I felt sick. I’d worked my whole life to get to this position. It was my senior year. This wasn’t supposed to happen. As a backup, I had a choice to make. I could complain bad-mouth the new guy, and feel sorry for myself. Or ...I could make the most of the situation. Luckily, I decided to deal with it. I was no longer throwing touchdowns, but I could help in other ways. So I swallowed my pride and kept supporting the team, working hard and preparing for each game as if I were the starter. I chose to keep my chin up. Was it easy? Not at all. I often felt like a failure. Sitting out every game after being the starter was a shame. Keeping a good attitude was a constant struggle. Was it the right choice, though? Definitely. I wore out my bum (屁股) on the bench all year but I contributed to the team in other ways by supporting the new guy and helping to prepare our defense each week for the opposing team’s offense. Most importantly, I took responsibility for my attitude. I cannot begin to tell you what a positive difference this important decision made in my life.8.Why did the coach ask the author into his office?( )A.To give him some advice.B.To ask about his physical state.C.To inform him of something bad.D.To offer him some encouragement.9.What does the underlined phrase “throwing touchdowns” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?( )A.Losing heart. B.Working hard.C.Winning points. D.Making progress.10.What did the author think of his choice?( )A.Boring but worthwhile.B.Easy and rewarding.C.Hard but interesting.D.Funny and embarrassing.11.What does the author mainly stress in the passage?( )A.The value of setbacks.B.The value of teamwork.C.The importance of diligence.D.The importance of attitude.D Online thrift (节俭) store thredUP has released its tenth annual Resale Report. The study, which assesses trends in the secondhand clothing industry, has an obviously positive tone. Resale is booming in the United States, as well as globally, and the secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026, reaching an impressive valuation of $82 billion. This is serious growth that indicates a real shift in the way people approach shopping for clothes. For most, it’s a way to save money in an inflationary (通货膨胀) economy. Forty-four percent of shoppers say they’re cutting back on buying clothing-more than any category apart from restaurants. Some say secondhand is enabling them to keep enjoying the brands they love. When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly careful about what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Gen Z (网络新生代) shoppers said they’ll pay more for an item that they know they can resell, and 36% of Gen Z shoppers stock and clear their closets at the same monthly or weekly rate. More than half resold clothing last year. As resale becomes more accessible thanks to mobile technology and online platforms, increasing numbers of customers are keen to turn over their closets, which fuels the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more. Secondhand helps to relieve people’s climate-related concerns. Thrifting is far better for the environment than buying new. As thredUP reported in 2021, buying used reduces an item’s carbon footprint by 82%. Choosing used over new displaces 17.4 pounds of CO2 emissions. It requires far less water and energy to produce, and it spares that item from going to landfill, where it will break down and give off methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful than CO2. It’s great to hear such positive news. Thrifting is a no-brainer, when you stop to think about it — well-made and good-looking fashion that helps the planet while saving us money. The more mainstream it can get, the better off we’ll all be.12.What does the booming of resale mean to most shoppers according to the text?( )A.Reducing expenses.B.Bringing down inflation.C.Focusing less on brands.D.Eating out more in restaurants.13.What promotes the development of the resale industry?( )A.Scientific development makes resale easier and more convenient.B.Many Gen Z shoppers choose used over new.C.Buying used has become a mainstream.D.Cleaning the closets is more frequent.14.What’s the author’s attitude to the resale of secondhand clothing?( )A.Disapproving. B.Objective.C.Doubtful. D.Favorable.15.What’s the best title for the text?( )A.Secondhand Clothing Improves ClimateB.Secondhand Market Benefits AmericansC.ThredUP Released A New Resale ReportD.Secondhand Clothing Is A Hot MarketⅡ. For nearly a decade, I’ve interviewed scores of high achievers, from astronauts to Olympic gold medalists to Nobel Prize winners. What was revealing is that all high achievers had four things in common. Tap into your intrinsic (内在的) motivation. 16.( ) Getting to the “why” behind your career choice is critical, as it will help you get in touch with your deepest motivations, block out distractions, and potentially adjust with your current path. For the highest achievers, it’s not about the medals, rewards, or promotions. They all told me that they loved what they do, could not imagine another path, and would do it for free if they could. Get comfortable with failure. Some people fear failing, while others fear succeeding. 17.( ) For them, it’s not a question of if they can overcome a challenge; the focus is always on how they can. They consider alternative strategies and work fiercely to control what they can control, and ignore distractions. Reinforce your foundation. Despite all of their achievements, high achievers never rest on their honours. Even if they’ve done a task or routine countless times, they still work on the basic skills foundational to their current — and future — success. 18.( ) It’s also the strategy marathon runners use when they train in high altitudes so that running the race in normal conditions feels easier. 19.( ) The high achievers I spoke with are continuously open to learning, although it is rarely in the classroom. Many of the Nobel Prize winners I spoke to were also inspired as a result of their openness and curiosity. Several shared that their breakthrough ideas occurred through casual conversations with colleagues in cafeterias and laundry rooms. Conference lectures, coffee breaks and group meals are not just for building your network. 20.( )A.Become a lifelong learner.B.Be the best whatever you do.C.It’s where new ideas take root and develop.D.Why did you enter your chosen profession?E.High achievers fear “not trying” more than they fear failing.F.In the military, people are similarly told to “train hard, fight easy”.G.What should we do to realise our dreams and live a life without regret? 1.gave me a guarantee2.have no difficulty communicating3.keep up with him素养能力提升Ⅰ. In Beijing ...poetry belonged naturally to this area. It’s also the strategy marathon runners use可知,上句提到了一种策略,故F项符合语境。 10.deal with the job market of the future 11.lead to a good job 12.get prepared with new skills and abilities 13.learn throughout life 14.improve existing processes and activities 15.be in touch with people all over the world 1.What is Kristy’s purpose of visiting Mr McDougall?( )A.To ask for advice on choosing a university course.B.To ask for advice on getting prepared with new skills and abilities.C.To ask for advice on how to master foreign languages.2.Why is learning throughout life the most important skill according to the passage?( )A.Because people were trained for one job.B.Because people stayed in one job for their whole lives.C.Because people will probably have four or five different jobs over many years.3.Which languages are becoming more popular to learn according to the passage?( )A.Chinese and Spanish.B.Chinese and English.C.Arabic and English.Ⅱ. 1.Well, it’s good to look for a course that will help you , but we can’t predict exactly what will be. The recommended sleep duration for adults is seven to nine hours anight, but many people often sleep for less than this.Research has shownthat sleeping less than the recommended amount is linked to having greaterbody fat, and can also influence how easily you lose weight on a calorie-controlled diet. Typically, the goal for weight loss is usually to decrease body fatwhile retaining as much muscle mass as possible. Not obtaining the correctamount of sleep can determine how much fat is lost as well as how muchmuscle mass you retain while on a calorie restricted diet. One study found that sleeping 5.5 hours each night over a two-weekperiod while on a calorie-restricted diet resulted in less fat loss whencompared to sleeping 8.5 hours each night. But it also resulted in a greaterloss of fat-free mass (including muscle). There are several reasons why shorter sleep may be associated withhigher body weight and affect weight loss. These include changes inappetite and food selection. Sleep influences two important appetite hormones (荷尔蒙) in ourbody — leptin and ghrelin. The former decreases appetite, while thelatter increases appetite. One study found that short sleep was associatedwith higher levels of ghrelin and lower levels of leptin. Along with changes in appetite hormones, reduced sleep has alsobeen shown to impact on food selection.Researchers have found that theareas of the brain responsible for reward are more active in response tofood after sleep loss (six nights of only four hours’ sleep) whencompared to people who had good sleep (six nights of nine hours’sleep). This could possibly explain why sleep-deprived people snack moreoften and tend to choose carbohydrate-rich foods and sweet-tastingsnacks, compared to those who get enough sleep. 1. However, it’s not what happens tous in life but how we respond to each situation that matters. I remember a major setback of my own. Two years after I hadbecome the starting quarterback (四分卫) in college, I seriouslyinjured my knee, had an operation, fell behind, and then lost myposition. Our coach called me into his office just before the season beganand told me they were handing the starting job to someone else. I felt sick. I’d worked my whole life to get to this position. It wasmy senior year. This wasn’t supposed to happen. As a backup, I had a choice to make. I could complain bad-mouththe new guy, and feel sorry for myself. Or ...I could make the most ofthe situation. Luckily, I decided to deal with it. I was no longer throwingtouchdowns, but I could help in other ways. So I swallowed my prideand kept supporting the team, working hard and preparing for each gameas if I were the starter. I chose to keep my chin up. Was it easy? Not at all. I often felt like a failure. Sitting out everygame after being the starter was a shame. Keeping a good attitude was aconstant struggle. Was it the right choice, though? Definitely. I wore out my bum(屁股) on the bench all year but I contributed to the team in other waysby supporting the new guy and helping to prepare our defense each weekfor the opposing team’s offense. Most importantly, I tookresponsibility for my attitude. I cannot begin to tell you what a positivedifference this important decision made in my life. 8.
