He’s Mozart level. It’s coming from somewhere beyond,” piano tuner (调音师) Bill Magnusson said of young Kofie’s musical talent. Magnusson, using an inheritance he received from his father, gifted a $15,000 grand piano to Kofie after he saw the piano prodigy on local news. Kofie cheered in excitement as the grand piano was wheeled into his Colorado home for the first time in a video that was shared on CBS News show “Sunday Morning”. CBS “Sunday Morning” later summed up Kofie’s story in a tweet that went viral with over 10,000 likes.“Eleven-year-old Jude Kofie, of Aurora, Colorado, demonstrated a remarkable talent no one anticipated when he discovered an old keyboard and, without any lessons, began playing.” Twitter users reacted to the emotional story, with one reporter calling Jude Kofie and his family “amazing people”. Magnusson was moved to help Kofie after he saw the boy playing the piano in a local news story. However, Magnusson was concerned that Kofie was not able to afford the piano lessons from professional teachers that he needed to grow as a piano player. “What resources are left over to help this special little soul?” Magnusson asked. Magnusson also promised Kofie’s family that he would tune the piano once a month for the rest of his life. “We’re family now,” he said. Jude Kofie’s father, Isaiah Kofie, was shocked at Magnusson’s generosity. “All for free,” he said. “Who does that?” Jude’s father asked, becoming visibly emotional. Isaiah Kofie told the news station that there’s no way he could afford a grand piano and never would’ve imagined he’d have one in his living room. When asked how to explain his once-in-a-generation talent on the piano, Jude Kofie said that it was “a miracle”. “That’s what I prefer,” he added.4.What led to Bill Magnusson’s act of kindness?( )A.Jude Kofie’s brilliant talent.B.Jude Kofie’s family background.C.Jude Kofie’s practicing hard.D.Jude Kofie’s requesting help.5.What was Bill Magnusson still concerned about Jude Kofie?( )A.He would lack formal training.B.He would likely give up halfway.C.He wouldn’t work hard enough.D.He wouldn’t become successful.6.How did Jude Kofie’s father feel according to the text?( )A.Moved and doubtful.B.Confused and curious.C.Satisfied and pleased.D.Surprised and grateful.7.What would be the most suitable title for the text?( )A.An 11-Year-Old Prodigy Attracted Media AttentionB.The Video of Kofie’s Story Went Viral on the InternetC.A Tuner Bought a Grand Piano for 11-Year-Old ProdigyD.Twitter Users Showed Support for 11-Year-Old ProdigyC The letter from the principal couldn’t have been clearer:The bus will pick up your new kindergartner at the designated bus stop. Parents are not to ride with children on the bus, and under no circumstances are parents to come to the school, whether to drop off their children or to take pictures. Parking is tight, even for teachers, staff, and buses, and additional cars are strictly forbidden at the beginning or end of the school day. That was all understandable but they didn’t know my five-year-old twins. Shy and sensitive, they hid whenever the doorbell rang. My fear on that first day of school was that my girls would hide under a bus seat, or somehow get lost or stolen. The first day of school wouldn’t be easy for them (me). The day finally came. The bus was late, and I watched Morgan and Chloe get on, turn and wave on the top step. Okay, then I ran like hell. But I ran before the bus, not after the bus. Can’t a woman go for a run? The bus finally overtook me a few hundred yards before the school building. Panting, I made my way to the front entrance, hidden safely behind a large SUV. I had a bird’s-eye view of every child that climbed down the bus steps and walked into the school doors. I willed my breath to quiet down and I concentrated hard on just being still because getting caught would be beyond embarrassing. Sweat dripped down my forehead and mixed with the sunblock (防晒霜) I had thoughtfully applied hours before, stinging my eyes and making me shed tears. A few minutes went by. Two more buses emptied and left, and then there they were! Chloe smiled shyly as the principal gave her a big smile and “Welcome!” Morgan stayed tightly behind, chin down, but she was smiling and holding her sister’s hand. I said it was the sweat and the sunblock that made me shed tears. I was lying about that part.8.What’s the purpose of the letter from the principal?( )A.To make some requests.B.To offer some instructions.C.To inform parents of some matters.D.To remind parents of coming events.9.Why did the author run to the school?( )A.To visit the school.B.To watch her twins.C.To call on the principal.D.To accompany her twins.10.How did the author feel when she was behind a SUV?( )A.Happy and excited.B.Nervous and worried.C.Curious and surprised.D.Sad and disappointed.11.What was the author lying about?( )A.The reason why she shed tears.B.The fact that she used sunblock.C.The reason why she ran to school.D.The fact that she hid behind a SUV.D The endowment effect. The overinterpretation of small numbers. The anchoring effect. The availability heuristic. Loss aversion ... As you read through this list, you may recognise most or all of them as fundamental aspects of how humans perceive (认为) and process their experiences. They are also connected in another way: each was co-discovered by one man, Daniel Kahneman, the author of the recently published Thinking, Fast and Slow. Kahneman has been a prominent leader in the field of cognitive science for about four decades now, an illustrious career that has included a Nobel Prize for his work on economic decision-making. The book, written for a general audience, records this career and the scientific advances it has generated. That said, Kahneman certainly does not intend the book to be primarily a memoir (回忆录), nor should it be classified as such. Rather, the goal of the book, as the title implies, is to communicate dual-processing theory, the idea that our brain engages in two different forms of thought. He uses his extensive experience — personal histories, study-by-study accounts, and likely a handful of techniques he has developed through the years — to convey this message, the sum product being an enjoyable and edifying read for anyone, scientist or not. At the beginning, Kahneman introduces us to the book’s two main characters: Systems 1 and 2, our two modes of cognition (认知). They also make for the title of the book. System 1 is “fast”, comprising the various prejudices that immediately perceive events; System 2 is “slow”, allowing us to observe and direct our attention, and gather evidence for or against one idea or another. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman offers useful and inspirational insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives―and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental problems that often get us into trouble. Topping bestseller lists for almost ten years, Thinking, Fast and Slow is an essential book that has changed the lives of millions of readers.12.Why does the author provide a list of terms at the beginning of the text?( )A.To introduce a new book.B.To introduce Daniel Kahneman.C.To explain some interesting theories.D.To analyze some interesting phenomena.13.What does Thinking, Fast and Slow focus on?( )A.An insight into human’s mindset.B.An exploration into human’s behaviour.C.Daniel Kahneman’s personal experience.D.Daniel Kahneman’s scientific experiments.14.What do we learn about System 1 and System 2?( )A.The former is more objective.B.The former is more accurate.C.The latter is more logical.D.The latter is more efficient.15.What does the author think of Thinking, Fast and Slow?( )A.Practical and influential.B.Humorous and interesting.C.Serious and hard to follow.D.Clear and easy to understand.Section Ⅰ TOPIC TALK基础知识自测维度一1.registration 2.detective 3.Fantasy 4.absorbing 5.structure 6.recite 7.setting 8.dramatic 9.subjective10.Folk维度二1.adventurous 2.stimulation 3.mysterious 4.contradiction 5.literature 6.historian 7.submission 8.romantic维度三1.absorbed himself in2.submit to3.figure out素养能力提升语篇解读:本文是一篇应用文。 10.teach you a lot about ... 11.do a project on ... 12.have big collections of literary works 13.fill in and submit a registration form 14.read articles online 1.When was The Moonstone written?( )A.In the 17th century.B.In the 18th century.C.In the 19th century.2.Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?( )A.Detective stories.B.Biography.C.Science fiction.3.Why does the boy think historical novels are not boring?( )A.They have a good plot.B.The settings are interesting.C.They can teach you a lot about different eras and cultures.Ⅱ. 1.Yes.I find detective stories and .I love in them. Parents arenot to ride with children on the bus, and under no circumstances areparents to come to the school, whether to drop off their children or totake pictures. Parking is tight, even for teachers, staff, and buses, and additional cars are strictly forbidden at the beginning or end of theschool day. That was all understandable but they didn’t know my five-year-oldtwins. Shy and sensitive, they hid whenever the doorbell rang. My fearon that first day of school was that my girls would hide under a bus seat,or somehow get lost or stolen. The first day of school wouldn’t be easyfor them (me). The day finally came. The bus was late, and I watched Morgan andChloe get on, turn and wave on the top step. Okay, then I ran like hell. But I ran before the bus, not after the bus. Can’t a woman go for arun? The bus finally overtook me a few hundred yards before the schoolbuilding. Panting, I made my way to the front entrance, hidden safelybehind a large SUV. I had a bird’s-eye view of every child that climbeddown the bus steps and walked into the school doors. I willed my breath toquiet down and I concentrated hard on just being still because gettingcaught would be beyond embarrassing. Sweat dripped down my foreheadand mixed with the sunblock (防晒霜) I had thoughtfully applied hoursbefore, stinging my eyes and making me shed tears. A few minutes went by. Two more buses emptied and left, and thenthere they were! Chloe smiled shyly as the principal gave her a big smileand “Welcome!” Morgan stayed tightly behind, chin down, but shewas smiling and holding her sister’s hand. I said it was the sweat and thesunblock that made me shed tears. I was lying about that part. 8. Theanchoring effect. The availability heuristic. Loss aversion ... As youread through this list, you may recognise most or all of them asfundamental aspects of how humans perceive (认为) and process theirexperiences. They are also connected in another way: each was co-discovered by one man, Daniel Kahneman, the author of the recentlypublished Thinking, Fast and Slow. Kahneman has been a prominent leader in the field of cognitivescience for about four decades now, an illustrious career that hasincluded a Nobel Prize for his work on economic decision-making. The book, written for a general audience, records this career andthe scientific advances it has generated. That said, Kahneman certainlydoes not intend the book to be primarily a memoir (回忆录), norshould it be classified as such. Rather, the goal of the book, as the titleimplies, is to communicate dual-processing theory, the idea that ourbrain engages in two different forms of thought. He uses his extensiveexperience — personal histories, study-by-study accounts, and likely ahandful of techniques he has developed through the years — to convey thismessage, the sum product being an enjoyable and edifying read foranyone, scientist or not. At the beginning, Kahneman introduces us to the book’s two maincharacters: Systems 1 and 2, our two modes of cognition (认知).They also make for the title of the book. System 1 is “fast”,comprising the various prejudices that immediately perceive events;System 2 is “slow”, allowing us to observe and direct our attention, and gather evidence for or against one idea or another. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think,Kahneman offers useful and inspirational insights into how choices aremade in both our business and our personal lives―and how we can usedifferent techniques to guard against the mental problems that often get usinto trouble. Topping bestseller lists for almost ten years, Thinking,Fast and Slow is an essential book that has changed the lives of millions ofreaders. 12.
