Do you know the names of these planets in the solar system
新课讲授
Pair work. Color the sun, Earth and Mars. Talk about Earth’s other neighbors you know.
Activity 1
Pre-writing
The Sun is usually yellow or orange. The Earth is blue (for oceans) and green (for lands). Mars is often red.
We talked about Venus. Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It’s very hot because its atmosphere is thick and full of greenhouse gases, which trap heat.
Mercury is the first planet from the Sun. It’s small and has a lot of craters on its surface.
Read the text about Earth and Mars and complete the table.
What’s the main idea of the text
The main idea of the text is to introduce the similarities and differences between Earth and its neighboring planet Mars.
Activity 2
Earth and Its Neighbor—Mars
Is there any life in outer space We may think of the same planet—Mars.
Do you know Mars What do you think Mars is like
I know Mars! It’s often called the "Red Planet" because its soil has iron oxide—basically rust—which makes it look reddish.
Mars is smaller than Earth. It has a diameter of around 6,800 kilometers and Earth’s diameter is around 13,000 kilometers. Mars looks red because of its red soil, while most parts of Earth look blue because of its oceans.
What’s Mars’ approximate diameter
As a neighbor planet, Mars is farther from the Sun than Earth. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun, while Earth is about 150 million kilometers away. That is why Mars is colder than Earth.
About how far is Mars from the Sun
The temperature on Mars is about minus 63°C; here on Earth, the temperature is about 14°C on average. Although the two planets have many differences, they have something in common—water. On Mars, there’s a lot of ice under the ground; On Earth, we have water both on and under the ground.
What's the average temperature on Mars
Mars is waiting for us to explore, and so is the universe.
Read the text about Earth and Mars and complete the table.

Activity 3
Draw a table to compare two planets, and then draft your essay. The phrases and sentence patterns may help you.
Step 1 Choose planets: For example, choose Earth and Venus.
Planet Diameter Distance from the Sun Average Temperature Special Features
Earth Around 13,000 kilometers About 150 million kilometers About 14 C on average Has water both on and under the ground; Supports various life forms.
Venus About 12,104 kilometers About 108 million kilometers Around 462 C on average Has a thick atmosphere full of greenhouse gases; Looks very bright in the sky.
Step 2 Draw a table to compare two planets.
Step 3 Make your final draft in your exercise book.
Earth and Venus
Earth and Venus are both planets in the solar system, but they have many differences.
Earth has a diameter of around 13,000 kilometers, while Venus has a diameter of about 12,104 kilometers.Venus is about 108 million kilometers away from the Sun, which is closer than Earth that is about 150 million kilometers away from the Sun.
Step 3 Make your final draft in your exercise book.
Venus is waiting for us to explore, and so is the whole universe.
The average temperature on Venus is around 462 C, much hotter than Earth's average temperature of about 14 C. That is why Venus is a very hot planet.Although they are different in many ways, they both are planets in the solar system. Venus looks very bright in the sky because of its thick atmosphere.
Rate your draft, and then complete your essay. Write 1 (more improvements needed), 2 (Satisfactory), 3(Good) or 4 (excellent) for the ratings.
Please ask your partner to review your draft for errors and offer suggestions for improvement.

Activity 4
1. Mars looks red because of its red soil.(火星看起来是红色的,因为它
的红色土壤)。
“because of” 是介词短语,后接名词、代词或动名词,用于说明原因。
Venus is very hot because of its thick atmosphere full of greenhouse gases.
The plant died __________________ lack of water.
He was late __________________ the heavy rain.

2. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun, while Earth is about 150 million kilometers away. That is why Mars is colder than Earth.火星距离太阳约 2.28 亿公里,而地球距离太阳约 1.5 亿公里。那就是火星比地球冷的原因)。
“that is why” 用于引导表语从句,说明结果,意思是 “那就是…… 的原因”。
He didn't study hard. _____________ he failed the exam.
The road was blocked. ____________ we had to take another route.
