新课讲授
Project
Making a fact file about a planet
Pair work. Read the fact file of Mercury and introduce it to your partner.
distance(距离)
diameter(直径)
temperature
(温度)
Activity 1
Mercury is a planet in the solar system. It's about 58 million kilometers away from the Sun. Its diameter is around 4,880 kilometers, which is only a little larger than the Moon. The temperature on Mercury is very hot during the daytime but very cold at night.
Design a fact file for another planet in the solar system.
Fact File of Earth
Distance from the Sun: about 150 million kilometers away from the Sun
Activity 2
Size: a diameter of about 12,742 kilometers
Temperature: has a moderate temperature, suitable for living things
Design a fact file for another planet in the solar system.
Earth
a diameter of about 12,742 kilometers
about 150 million kilometers away from the Sun
has a moderate temperature, suitable for living things
Group Work
Share your fact file in class. Put your fact files together to make a class fact file about the universe.
“Hello, everyone! This is the fact file of Mars. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun. Its diameter is around 6,779 kilometers. The temperature on Mars is very cold, with an average temperature of about -60°C.”

Mercury higher large far
Venus the highest larger farther
Earth high the largest the farthest
Example:
The average temperature on Earth is high.
The average temperature on Mercury is higher than that on Earth.
The average temperature on Venus is the highest of the three planets.
Activity 3 Group work. Discuss the information and make sentences.
原级:The size of Mercury is large.
比较级:The size of Venus is larger than that of Mercury.
最高级:The size of Earth is the largest of the three planets.
原级:The distance from the Sun to Mercury is far.
比较级:The distance from the Sun to Venus is farther than that to Mercury.
最高级:The distance from the Sun to Earth is the farthest of the three planets.
Activity 4 Read the text and answer the questions.
Pluto is a special planet. It travels around the Sun. It takes Pluto about 248
Earth Years to go around the Sun. Clyde Tombaugh discovered Plutoin 1930.
Pluto is about 40 times farther from the Sun than Earth. It has five small satellites (moons). To have a better look at the planet and its satellites, scientists sent a spaceship to fly close to it. The spaceship took many pictures. Scientists put the pictures together and learned more about Pluto. There is no air on the planet. It is so cold on the planet that air would freeze into something like snow. Without air, human beings can't live on the planet.

Read the text and answer the questions.
1. How long does it take pluto to go around the Sun
2. Who discovered Pluto
3. How many satellites (moons) move around Pluto
4. Why did scientists send a spaceship to fly close to Pluto
5. Can people live on Pluto Why or why not
About 248 Earth years.
Clyde Tombaugh.
Five/5.
To have a better look at the planet and its satellites.
No, because there is no air on the planet.
1. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun.
“away from” 表 “距离…… 有多远”,结构为 “数词 + 距离单位 + away from + 地点”,描述物体间距离。
eg: The library is 3 kilometers away from my house.(图书馆离我家 3 公里远。)
超市离学校有 500 米远。
The supermarket is 500 meters ______ ______ the school.
away
from
Language points
2. Is there any life in outer space (外太空有生命吗?)
“there be” 表 “某地存在某物 / 人”,be 动词单复数由后面的主语决定(there is + 单数 / 不可数名词;there are + 复数名词)。
eg: There are some students in the classroom.(教室里有一些学生。)
__________ a pen in my pencil case.
__________ some flowers in the garden.
__________ any water in the glass (一般疑问句)
There is
There are
Is there
Vocabulary: planet, distance, temperature, member, light, amazing...
Sentences:
Distance from the Sun: about... kilometers away from the Sun.
Temperature: very... in the daytime and very... at night.
The earth and other planets... around the sun.
Fact File of Mercury
Distance from the Sun: about 58 million kilometers away from the Sun
Size: a diameter of around 4,880 kilometers — only a little larger than the Moon
Temperature: very hot in the daytime and very cold at night
