Schwarzenegger’s Way to Success
Perhaps you’ve heard of the huge action superstar of the 1980s and 90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous for movies like The Terminator. Even now, at the age of 76, Schwarzenegger has never given up on his love for bodybuilding and physical fitness.
As a child born in 1947 in Austria, Schwarzenegger had watched movies about Hercules (大力神) and dreamed to be the big hero on the screen. Schwarzenegger began working on his dream when he was a teenager, exercising and weightlifting nonstop. As a young man he would take part in the biggest bodybuilding competition in the world, winning the titles (称号) of Mr Universe five times and Mr Olympia seven times.
At the height of his bodybuilding, Schwarzenegger decided to try and break into Hollywood. Because of little money and poor English, his life in the US was not as easy as he had expected. But he worked tirelessly on learning the language and acting. He wasn’t welcomed into Hollywood with open arms, being told his accent (口音) wouldn’t work, his name was too long and that his body was too big. “...Everyone said... ‘You will never become a leading man’.” Schwarzenegger said in an interview with Virgin Radio UK.
But Schwarzenegger wasn’t going to be held back. “I didn’t listen to them at all,” said Schwarzenegger, “…like Mandela always said, everything is impossible until someone does it. And that’s the way I feel.”
Schwarzenegger went on to become the Governor (州长) of California in 2003 and ran for two terms before returning to the world of acting. Now he continues to act, runs exercise programs and has also written a number of books on personal fitness and achieving success.
1.What did Schwarzenegger dream to be as a teenager
2.Why was Schwarzenegger’s life in the US not as easy as he expected at first
3.When did Schwarzenegger become the Governor of California
4.Besides acting, what else does Schwarzenegger do now
5.What do you think plays the most important role in his success Why do you think so

In 2017, his efforts paid off. He scored 684 in the college entrance exam and earned bonus points, entering Tsinghua University. At Tsinghua, he politely refused personal donations, living on scholarships and part-time jobs. Self-awareness (自我认识) means having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you’re self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it and music makes you happy.
Knowing what you like and what you are good at allows you to make better decisions. Learning to trust your own feelings helps you build confidence. The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of the ten important life skills that help people to be happier and healthier.
How do you learn to be self-aware It’s useful to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why”. So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’re arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be brave and try out new things. Don’t be afraid to dislike something. Discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

Dear Miss King,
I am a fat girl with a round face, so some of my classmates named me “Little Fatty”. I am not confident about my looks. Do you think having good looks is important for a middle school student
Sally
Dear Sally,
Our looks do influence what others think of us and how we feel about ourselves. But the looks are not the most important thing in our life.
What you said makes me think of myself. When I was your age, I was never confident because of my looks. People always laughed at my weight (体重), my height, my hair... At that time, I was the shortest student in my class. I felt very unhappy. However, someone told me something that I would always remember.
It was in March. A group of girls pointed at me and laughed at my looks at a break. I couldn’t help crying. Tears quietly ran down my face. To my surprise, someone wiped (擦) the tears from my eyes. I then knew it was our English teacher Jenny. She said, “You are perfect the way you are. You should never change or hate yourself. People accept you for who you are. But if you can’t accept yourself, then how will other people accept you ”
Her words encouraged me a lot. And later I knew that no one is perfect and that we all have flaws (缺陷). From then on, I became happy and helpful. Now, I have wonderful friends who love me for who I am.
So now, do you feel better after hearing my story Remember that your looks are the best gift from your parents. You are wonderful just the way you are!

Are you an “I” person or an “E” person We hear this question a lot these days. In fact, these are two personality types (类型) based on the MBTI test, Generally speaking, an “I” person is shy and quiet, while an “E” person is outgoing.
So what is the MBTI test It’s a personality test that helps us better understand our personality preference and tells us how we relate to the world around us. It was developed in the 1940s by Katharine and her daughter Isabel.
You can take the MBTI test just by answering several sets of questions. These questions cover all aspects (方面) of your behavior, preferences and thought processes. For each question, you need to choose the answer that best matches your feelings, attitude (态度) and behavior. Then you’ll know what your personality type is.
The MBTI test is popular for many reasons. Let’s take a closer look at just a few. First, people want to understand themselves. Human personality is very complex (复杂的), and this test provides a simple way for people to learn about themselves, Next, taking the MBTI test is relaxing and enjoyable, because its questions are interesting. Then, connect with others on a deeper level. Last but not least, while there are many kinds of personality tests on the market, the MBTI test is the most widely recognized.
The MBTI test may show something we don’t know about ourselves and can be a fun way to help us make new friends. But knowing someone’s MBTI results doesn’t mean we really know that person. Nor do the MBTI results define (定义) who we are.
31.What is an “I” person like
32.When was the MBTI test developed
33.How can we take the MBTI tests
34.How many reasons why the MBTI test is so popular are mentioned in Paragraph 4
35.Are you an “I” person or an “E” person Please give a reason.(需与文中的描述不同)
MBTI (性格分类指标) is a personality (性格) test. Many Chinese are very interested in it now. “Am I an ‘I’ person or an ‘E’ person ” “T” means introverted (性格内向的) and “E” means extroverted (性格外向的). A number of people take the test to find out the answer.
They find the test helpful. The MBTI test puts people into 16 kinds. People can know what kind of person they are by taking the test and it helps them to know about themselves better.
“I want to have a party next week. I’m an ‘E’ person. I can clean my room and think about some games. I’ll call Mary to buy some food and drinks. Oh, Jackson is a music lover. He can choose the best music for us. We must have a wonderful night.” “I’m an ‘I’ person. I’d like to work by myself. Our school library is my favorite place to relax myself. I enjoy reading and thinking quietly there and maybe I could be a writer in the future.” They may think like this.
There are also some problems. Some people take the test for a second time and get different results. Some people find it difficult to answer some questions. “I like watching TV by myself. But I also enjoy going camping with my friends. Am I an ‘I’ or an ‘E’ ”
“Personalities can change (变化) with time, and they are not black or white,” scientists say. You may be introverted now but become extroverted when you get older. Or, you can be both an “I” and an “E”. You can be anyone you want to be!

What is personality
Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. It makes them different from others.
Each person’s personality is made up of different personality characters such as kindness or shyness. These characters decide how people behave in different situations. For example, if someone shy is served the wrong meal in a restaurant, he probably won’t say anything. On the other hand, someone outgoing will probably complain and get the meal he ordered.
Where does your personality come from
The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot.
However, humans aren’t robots! We have personalities. The human brain has a special part giving us personality and allowing us to think for ourselves, unlike a computer. This part of the brain is called the mind.
Personality types
Clearly scientists cannot study the mind by looking inside someone’s brain! All they would see is blood and grey matter. To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. This includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests like this one:
1. Do you think you’re pretty or good-looking
2. Would you rather read a book or go to a party
3. Do you have a large group of friends or just one or two close friends
4. Do you mind talking in public or does it scare you
5. Are you messy or neat
6. Do you plan your work well or do you do things at the last minute
Scientists believe that answers to these types of questions tell us something about a person’s personality characters. After asking thousands of people thousands of questions, they’ve found that some personality characters seem to go together. This has led scientists to believe that there’re certain personality types. For example, shy people are often quiet. They have an introverted (内向的) personality type. The opposite is an extroverted (外向的) personality type — people who are outgoing, talkative and like being around other people.

46.Why is the human brain like a computer
47.How do scientists study human behavior
48.How many personality types are mentioned in this passage
49.What decides your personality (请自拟一句话作答)

When answering the phone, it is important for you to have polite and friendly manners (礼仪). But do you know how to answer the phone properly Here are some suggestions for you.
First, it is best to answer the phone after 2 or 3 rings. If you let it ring more than 3 times, the caller may become impatient and think you’re not available now. If you pick up the phone after the first ring, the caller may not have enough time to organize his/her thoughts.
Second, it is necessary to answer the phone in a quiet environment. If you’re in a loud environment, move somewhere quieter so that you can hear the caller, and the caller can hear you, too.
After picking up the phone, greet the person politely first. If you don’t know who is calling, you can first say “Hello” and give your name. And then nicely ask who’s calling. Once the caller has introduced himself/herself, you can address the caller properly. If you know who is calling, feel free to say something like “Hi! How are you today ”
Don’t talk to other people if you’re having some food. Take the time to swallow (咽下) it before answering the phone. In fact, you’re not supposed to speak with your mouth full at any time. Even when you’re talking to a friend, he/she may have a hard time understanding you.根据语篇内容,回答问题。(1-3题每个题目的答案不超过5个词,4-5题不超过20个词)

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice of anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达) of information or correspondence (通信)”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it munication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.
60.What does communication begin with
61.What should you do if you try to make your parents see something as you see it
62.What is the purpose of giving the example of Sophie and her parents
63.What do you think is the most important thing when living and dealing with parents Why

Asking for information politely is an important skill in daily life. Whether you are talking to strangers, writing emails, or making phone calls, being polite can help you get the information you need and leave a good impression. Here are some useful tips.
Always use polite words like “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.” These words show respect and make the other person feel valued. For example, instead of saying “Where is the post office ”, you can say, “Could you please tell me where the post office is ”
Use soft and friendly language. Avoid sounding too direct or demanding. Instead of saying “I want to know…”, try saying “I was wondering if you could help me with…” This sounds more polite and gives the other person a choice to help.
Be clear about what you need. Before asking, think carefully about the information you want. This helps the person understand your question better and give you a useful answer.
Remember to listen carefully. After you ask a question, give the person time to respond. Don’t interrupt when they are speaking. Show that you are interested by nodding or smiling.
Always thank the person after they help you. A simple “Thank you so much for your help!” can make them feel happy and willing to help you again in the future.
By following these tips, you can ask for information in a polite and effective way.
64.What polite words should you use when asking for information
65.How can you make your language sound softer and less direct
66.What should you think about before asking
67.How should you show your interest when others are speaking
68.Imagine you need to ask a stranger for directions to the nearest bus stop. How would you ask politely (Your answer should be different from the examples in the text.)

Have you heard of “soft skills” before To be honest, they’re abilities that are not taught in school. However, to be truly happy and successful, you need to develop soft skills. Here are some of them.
Understand the power of non-language communication. If you have watched a nature program, you’ve probably seen how some animals communicate. For example, a wolf can control its young just by using a different look in its eyes. While humans have the ability to speak, about 55% of our face-to-face communication actually takes place through body language.
Know how to make others laugh. I’m sure with your friends and family you have a great sense of humor. However, how about at work or when you meet strangers Break free, and add humor to your actions. Then your personal happiness will rise.
Respect others. Unfortunately, this soft skill seems to be going out of fashion at present. Too many people have become self-centered, and put their own hopes above the needs of other people. Please make sure you respect all those you come into contact with. Interestingly, by respecting others, you’ll find they respect you more in return.
Have persuasive (令人信服的) power. This isn’t some kind of superheroes’ power. It’s an ability that many people have developed. If you learn to communicate persuasively, you will go far.
69.How can a wolf control its young
70.Have these “soft skills” ever been taught in school
71.What percent of our face-to-face communication actually takes place through body language
72.What will others do when you respect them

The history of traffic lights dates back to the early 19th century in Britain. London was a busy city with horse-drawn carriages (马车). They often rushed into people, causing many accidents. At the same time, there was a fashion rule in London—women in red showed that they were married and green for unmarried. This gave people the idea for using red and green as traffic signs later.
On December 10th, 1868, British railway engineer J. P. Knight designed (设计) the world’s first traffic light with only red and green. A policeman had to pull a belt (皮带) to change the lights: red meant “stop”, and green meant “go”. At first, it worked well and reduced (减少) accidents. However, this traffic light exploded (爆炸) after 23 days. The light was turned off, but the idea stayed alive.
In 1914, electric traffic lights were first used in America. Red and green still did their jobs, then they were safer and easier to see.
In 1920, a Chinese student named Hu Ruding was studying in the US. He noticed drivers sometimes rushed when the light changed. “What if there’s a middle color to slow people down ” he thought. That’s how the yellow light was born, meaning “get ready to stop.” Around the same time, an American policeman named William Potts created the first three-color traffic lights for all directions. They made crossroads (十字路口) much safer.
These colors were not chosen by chance. Red is easy to see, like a fire alarm, so it means “danger-stop!” Yellow is a warning (警告), like a sign that says “be careful—slow down!” Green, like a forest, tells us “safe to go!” Together, they form a common language that keeps safe every day.
Great ideas come from everyday things. Whether traffic lights or something else, noticing and thinking “what if” can change the world!
74.When did the world’s first traffic light with only red and green appear
75.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 5
76.Who suggested adding a yellow light to traffic lights

Beijing’s Forbidden City is a place full of wonders. From its thousands of rooms to its many different beautiful collections, there’s no doubt it’s one of China’s most popular places for tourists.
But even more than 600 years after it was built, it’s still managing to serve up surprises.
Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it’s said that the Forbidden City has survived (幸免于难) more than 200 earthquakes.
Recently, a television programmed by UK broadcaster Channel 4 has studied the skills of the ancient building’s designers. A group of Chinese engineers were shown building a model of one of the Forbidden City’s palaces, at one-fifth of the size.
To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is, the model was put to a test. In the test, they simulated (模拟) an earthquake of 9.5 on the Richter scale. Instead of falling apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.
According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City’s strength, as well as other ancient Chinese structures’, lies in dougong—a centuries-old building method invented in China.
This is the name for special brackets (构件) on buildings. Despite being held together without any nails or glue, the brackets are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets terrible.
“Dougong design is an important earthquake-resistant (抗震的) feature of classical Chinese structures because the shape will be changed under pressure, much like the shock absorbers (减震器) of a car,” according to Chinese National Geography.
“Ancient Chinese people created structures that were both strong and good-looking by using dougong, showing their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.”
The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and culture, but perhaps it should add one more thing to its list of attractions: earthquake shelter.

In 223 BC Meng Tian (蒙恬) led the army in a war against the Chu Kingdom. In those days, people wrote on silk with a kind of stick pen. The stick pen was very hard and made writing very slow. Meng Tian had to often write a great number of reports about the battlefield situation to the Qin ruler. He was frustrated (沮丧的) with the difficulty of writing, so he decided to make improvements.
Between battles, Meng enjoyed hunting. One day, Meng hunted a wild rabbit. It was fat and heavy and its tail left a trail (痕迹) on the ground. Meng suddenly had an idea. He immediately tied the rabbit’s tail to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too oily (含油的) to hold the ink. Meng felt very sad and threw his “rabbit hair brush pen” away into a hole in the rocks.
However, Meng Tian couldn’t accept the failure and continued to spend time wondering how to improve the brush pen. A few days later, he was having a walk outside for some fresh air. By chance, he found the rabbit hair brush pen that he had thrown away again. He picked it up and found that it had changed and was now soft and wet—holding water. Meng Tian got inspiration at once. Then it drew attention from more people,” Qiu said about her idea. “My classmates and I want to have a learning friend to help us remember the key information. When we don’t know something, we can also ask for help at any time.”
Students only need to put what they have studied into AI Button. Then AI will quickly find key points, ask questions, and answer students’ questions as well. “This AI is like a teacher because it meets students’ needs,” Qiu said.
Many students loved Qiu’s AI Button. They wanted to join her to make it better. “Now I have a small team of students from different schools. From my own experience, I hope it can make more students be interested in innovative technology (科技创新).” Her dream will surely come true in the near future.

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Did you find it hard to do something because two arms just weren’t enough If so, you might be interested in a new device, a robotic arm. You can wear this robotic arm in the middle of the chest and control it through the muscle you use to breathe. It can move above your shoulders or to your side, depending on what you want to do, says engineer Giulia Domi from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The arm is designed to be used as an extra (额外的) arm.
It’s difficult to control the extra arm while still using your real arms. That’s why Domi’s team made it breath-controlled. Taking a deep breath tells the arm to extend, while breathing out deeply pulls it back. Breathing normally keeps the arm in place.
Before building the real robotic arm, Domi’s team first made one in virtual reality (虚拟现实), or VR. The team found that people seemed to naturally learn to control the virtual arm. The researchers then built a real robotic arm to work like the virtual one had done. Participants who had learned to use the extra virtual arm had a success rate of about 90% using the real one. So it is easy for people to learn to use it.
The extra robotic arms could help people to do extra things. For example, workers could use them to control machinery for risky jobs more easily. Doctors could use the extra arms for surgeries (外科手术). Also, they could be helpful for disabled people or people recovering from accidents or strokes.
However, there is still room for improvement. Although people could use the robotic arm in everyday tasks, they are as expensive as some devices like the VR glasses. Early tests showed that people could look around and talk while using the extra arm. But it’s still not clear how well people can control their two natural arms along with an extra robotic one. “When you add something new, it’s uncertain how much the brain can do with that,” says Jacob George from the University of Utah’s robotics center.
93.Where do people wear this robotic arm
94.Why did Domi’s team design the robotic arm to be breath-controlled
95.What did Domi’s team do before building the real robotic arm
96.What do you think of the robotic arm Why do you think so (Give 2 reasons.)
