Betty is a biologist (生物学家). She studies brain diseases that come along with aging. Her job is not an easy one. She is trying to understand what goes wrong with the brain over time, and how people can age in a healthy way. It is very important, especially when people are living a longer life now.
Betty does not have a natural gift for math. She never thought that she could be a scientist one day when she was little. Now, she has got a doctor’s degree in biology and become a famous medical researcher. Betty has made it partly because she is curious about everything. This is a very important quality for a scientist. Another reason is that she is a creative thinker. “After all, science is all about problem-solving,” Betty said.
Betty thinks the best part of her research is trying out an idea to see if it will work. Her heart is filled with joy when her idea is proved right and accepted by other scientists. But when things don’t go smoothly as she plans, she feels no disappointment. She says mistakes may lead to a new idea.
Few are born to be a scientist. According to Betty, curiosity and creativity play the biggest role.

There was a little boy whose name was Peter. He lived in a village close to the sea.
One day, Peter was walking on his way back home along a sea wall when it began to rain. Suddenly, he saw a hole in the wall, from which the sea water was running. Peter asked for help by shouting, because he knew the hole meant that the sea was making its way through the sea wall, but no answer came. He thought he should do something else as quickly as possible. He started to run towards his village. At the same time, the rain became heavier and heavier.
It was getting dark, but Peter ran on and on. He felt cold and hungry. In the rainstorm, he fell down over and over again. Many times he thought about giving up, but he fought on. He remembered his father’s words, “The walls can keep the village safe from danger. The sea walls are really important.”
Finally, when people saw him, Peter had been black and blue all over. The boy told the villagers what had happened to the sea wall. They repaired it in time. “Thank God! He saved the village,” they praised (表扬) Peter. All the villagers called him “Peter the Guard (警卫;看守)” from then on.

Do you find it hard to say no whenever someone comes to you for help Do you feel guilty (内疚的) when you have to tell people that you can’t help them And do you often say “yes” while your true answer is “no” If you answered yes, you may be a “people-pleaser”.
Being friendly and helpful is a good thing. It helps you build lasting friendships. However, going too far—trying to please others even at the cost of your own happiness—can leave you feeling stressed. Luckily, there are some steps that you can take to stop being a people-pleaser.
To start with, it’s important to create “boundaries (边界)” in your life. Be clear about what you really like to do. You can also tell others that they can only come to you during a certain period of time.
When someone asks you for help, tell him or her that you need some time to think about it. Use this time to ask yourself: Do you really want to do this How much time will it take By giving yourself a few minutes, you’ll be better able to decide.
(3) Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. They place a low value on their own happiness. In this case, try positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you have dreams, too. You don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.
(4) Making a sudden and big change can be hard, but you can break a huge task up into pieces. You may, for example, text to say no. Then, go straight to the person and say no. Practice this in less difficult situations first, such as talking to a salesperson or ordering at a restaurant. Then try refusing your friends or relatives.
Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you have to give up being kind and helpful. You can still do good things—but don’t take away your own happiness.

Van Tilburg and his team did a study asking people to describe what boring people are like according to someone they knew. In the study, most people said that a boring person is quiet, has no interests or ideas, and doesn’t have a sense of humor (幽默感).
Later studies showed that being seen as boring is a bad personality characteristic (性格特点). And these people are often called introverts (内向的人).
So why do some people think introverts are boring Quiet people usually keep their lives secret (秘密的) and don’t like sharing their lives with others. This is different from what many cultures enjoy: being outgoing and welcome. Because of this, people might wrongly think that “quiet” means “boring”. They believe being very outgoing and sharing everything online shows people are fun.
However, thinking that being outgoing is better can be a mistake, according to another study. This idea may start when we are in our teenage years because we have the most friends and are popular with everyone at that time. This kind of popularity can make quiet people feel bad about not being so social (合群的).
In fact, introverts have something called a “quiet ego (自我)”. It helps them be able to put themselves in other people’s shoes and see all sides of problems. They not only care about themselves, but also care about others. Their kindness also brings them a feeling of long-lasting happiness.
It’s not right to think introverts are boring because introversion has many good points. Introverts are truer to themselves. Knowing being introverted is good can make people feel great about themselves. There can be happiness in being “boring” if you have a quiet, introverted personality.
46.What did most people in the study think of a boring person (no more than 20 words)
47.How does the quiet ego help introverts (no more than 6 words)
48.Are you an introvert What do you think of introverts (本题字数不限)

Communication is an important part of our lives. It helps us build relationships, share ideas, and understand others. Good communication skills can make our lives easier and more successful.
There are many ways to communicate with others. Face-to-face communication is one of the most common and effective ways. When we talk face to face, we can see the expressions on the other person’s face and hear the tone of their voice. This helps us understand their feelings better. For example, if someone is smiling and speaking in a friendly tone, we can tell that they are happy. On the other hand, if someone has a serious expression and speaks in a loud voice, we may think they are angry.
However, in modern society, we also rely a lot on electronic communication, such as text messages, emails, and video calls. These forms of communication are convenient, when we can’t meet in person. But they also have some disadvantages. For example, it’s easy to misunderstand the meaning of a text message because we can’t see the person’s face or hear their tone of voice.
To communicate effectively, we need to be good listeners. We should pay attention to what the other person is saying and try to understand their point of view. We should also be clear and honest when we express our own ideas. Using simple and direct language can help avoid misunderstandings.

Most people learn good manners as children, but sometimes when they grow up, they forget to use them. However, it’s important to have good manners all the time, because they show kindness and respect for others.
Saying “please” and “thank you” are among the simplest ways of being polite. They’re ways of showing that you notice and you are thankful for the nice things someone does for you. If you don’t, you’re treating someone like a servant who has to do whatever you say and you don’t care that someone takes the time to help you.
When I was a child, I didn’t like writing thank-you notes every time my mom asked me to. But as an adult, I’ve received thank-you notes that always make me smile on hard days. I’ve learned that taking the time to write these notes is a great way to make someone feel loved and special.
Saying “excuse me” is an easy way to get someone’s attention and show your good manners. Whether you’re asking for directions or needing help, starting with “excuse me” shows that you value the other person’s time and mind their feelings. This small phrase helps to continue the conversation freely.
Sometimes, good manners may require silence. Listening to others carefully and silently shows that you value the person speaking. Also avoid disturbing someone who is talking with someone else in person or on the phone. In most cases, what they are talking about may be more important than what you have to say.
Remember, good manners are not just about following rules; they are about making others feel valued and respected.

Picture this: Students pass their schoolwork through different hands, from their group leader to the class representative (课代表) and finally to the teacher. It might not sound too difficult, but sometimes it can go wrong and take a lot of time.
To deal with this problem, Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen Gezhi Academy in Guangdong came up with a useful tool—a smart homework collection robot.
The robot uses radio frequency identification (RFID, 射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject on it. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the list. “Teachers can check who hasn’t turned in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi,” the boy said.
Now, Zhang is planning to develop a third-generation robot and hopes to use new technology to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if you stick a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from lots of notebooks at once. Zhang believes that this is the key to how AI can make life easier for us.
Zhang dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other scientific and creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.

A car powered only by the sun
Let’s imagine a big car. It can travel a long way in different places without having to refuel (补充燃料). It is very friendly to the environment because it is powered by the sun. This car is real now. Some students in the Netherlands have built one. They call it Stella Terra.
The 22 students always wanted to make a car friendly to the environment just like an electric car. They had to work all by themselves. They spent a lot of time building it. The project was a big one.
