Teaching abroad can be daunting at first, taking that step into the unknown. But since I started the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) journey, I haven’t looked back. It has opened so many doors for me, including working abroad and seeing the world.
I knew I wanted to travel, and that TEFL was the way to make that possible by earning an income along the way. So to get started in this career, I got a TEFL certificate online.
Over the last four years, I have taught at an Italian summer camp, teaching English in Italy and Los Angeles. This gave me so much experience, and if you are interested in short-term work, there are many TEFL summer camps all over the world. They are prepared to help teachers by paying for travel expenses, accommodation, food, and a monthly wage. I made so many friends in the TEFL industry by taking this opportunity.
Since then, I have been able to backpack around Southeast Asia by working remotely teaching my students online. All I need is a laptop and good Wi-Fi While on my travels, I homeschooled children in Thailand in return for free accommodation, food, and a weekly wage. This career can make travel so accessible.
I knew I wanted to give back to a community along the way. This is when I decided to volunteer at a school in Cambodia in return for free accommodation and meals. This was a very different experience from what I was used to, but I believe it has made me a stronger teacher. I still continue to work with my students in Cambodia monthly over video call.
Over the last couple of years, I have grown so much as a teacher, and this is all because I said YES to opportunities that came my way.

C. Financial support for basic living costs.
D. Professional training in local languages.
7. What might the author say to those who follow her example
A. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
B. When opportunity knocks, open the door.
C. Constant dripping wears away the stone.

A new study from the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) says students appear to be using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) responsibly, and as a way to speed up tasks, not just boost their grades. Dr. Meaghan MacNutt, who teaches professional ethics (伦理学) in the UBCO School of Health and Exercise Sciences (HES), recently published a study which contradicts common concerns about students’use of AI.
Students in three different courses, almost 400 participants, completed a survey about their use of AI on at least five reflective writing assignments. All three courses used an identical AI policy and students had the option to use the tool for their writing.
While only about one-third of the students used AI, the majority of users, 81 percent, reported their GenAI use was inspired by at least one of the following factors: speed and ease in completing the assignment, a desire for high grades and a desire to learn. About 15 percent of the students said they were motivated by all three factors, with more than 50 percent using it to save time on the assignment.
“There is a lot of speculation (猜想) when it comes to students’ use of AI,” MacNutt says. “However, students in our study reported that GenAI use was motivated more by learning than by grades, and they are using GenAI tools selectively and in ways they believe are ethical and supportive of their learning. This was somewhat unexpected due to the common perception that undergraduate students have become increasingly focused on grades at the expense of learning.”
The study does raise some cautions, MacNutt warns. GenAI can be a useful tool for students learning English or people with reading and writing disabilities. But there is also the potential that if paid versions are better, students who can afford to use a more effective platform (平台) might have an advantage over others—creating further classroom unfairness.
8. What can be inferred about Dr. MacNutt’s study
A. Participants were too limited. B. Policies on AI tool usage vary.
C. AI is a choice for writing tasks. D. The survey focused on writing skills.
9. What was the main motivation for the majority of GenAI users in the study
A. To enhance academic performance.
B. To achieve higher grades effortlessly.
C. To replace their own writing entirely.
D. To gain an absolute advantage over others.
10. What is Dr. MacNutt’s attitude towards students’ use of GenAI
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Opposed. D. Objective.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ban AI tools to ensure fair education
B. Let students embrace AI technology wisely
C. AI use harms students’ learning motivation
D. GenAI threatens academic integrity in classrooms
D
We’ve all felt guilty when fruit and vegetables go bad before we could eat them. Now, researchers from MIT and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) have shown they can extend the shelf life of harvested plants by injecting them with melatonin (褪黑激素) using biodegradable microneedles (可生物降解微针).
That’s a big deal because the problem of food waste goes way beyond our salads. More than 30 percent of the world’s food is lost after it’s harvested — enough to feed more than 1 billion people. Refrigeration is the most common way to preserve foods, but it requires energy and equipment that many regions of the world can’t afford or lack access to. The researchers believe their system could offer an alternative or complement to refrigeration.
“This is the first time that we’ve been able to apply these microneedles to extend the shelf life of a fresh-cut crop,” says Benedictto Marelli, the study’s senior author, associate professor of Department Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. “We thought we could use this technology to deliver something that could regulate or control the plant’s post-harvest physiology.”
Central to their approach are patches of silk microneedles. The microneedles can get through the tough, waxy skin of plants without causing a stress response, and deliver precise amounts of melatonin into plants’ inner tissues. For the study, Marelli and researchers from SMART applied small patches of the microneedles containing melatonin to the base of the leafy vegetable, pak choy.
After application, the researchers found the melatonin was able to extend the vegetables’ shelf life by four days at room temperature and 10 days when refrigerated, which could allow more crops to reach consumers before they’re wasted.
“Post-harvest waste is a huge issue. This problem is extremely important in emerging markets around Africa and Southeast Asia, where many crops are produced but can’t be maintained in the journey from farms to markets,” says Benedictto.
12. What is the purpose of the study of MIT & SMART
A. To make produce keep long. B. To completely get rid of food waste.
C. To reduce the guilt of wasting food. D. To make the public aware of food waste.
13. What makes refrigeration fail to be a universal food preservation method
A. Its low effect. B. Regional limitations.
C. Too much daily use time. D. High use fees.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the approach works. B. How the microneedle is made.
C What the cost of the approach is. D. Where the approach would be used.
15. Why did Benedictto mention emerging markets in the last paragraph
A. To explain post-harvest research. B. To call for immediate food-saving action.
C. To show the potential of the technology. D. To highlight the global scale of food waste.

Anthony, a 16-year-old student at Lancaster High School near Buffalo, loved playing basketball. He was known among his classmates for being funny and friendly. However, when his school added a new task to learn first-aid knowledge, especially CPR (心肺复苏), Anthony didn’t like the idea at all.
The school had organized several first-aid classes as part of the health course. Anthony thought the lessons were a waste of time. He believed such skills were only helpful in very rare situations and that he would never need them. But his good friend David thought differently. David was very interested in the classes and kept telling Anthony how important first-aid skills were. “Anthony, you never know when these skills might be useful,” David said again and again. “It’s better to be prepared than regret it later.” Under David’s encouragement, Anthony decided to give it a try. Although the training was harder than Anthony expected, both he and David did a good job. “You’re really good at this!” David laughed as Anthony correctly placed his hands on the mannequin (人体模型) for CPR practice.
Late on Wednesday night, March 19, Anthony’s CPR skills were suddenly put to the test. His stepfather, Michael, who had a family history of heart disease, suddenly collapsed at the bottom of the stairs. Their barking dogs woke up his mother, Jennifer. She ran to find her husband unconscious and, completely panicked, called for Anthony’s help.
Anthony rushed downstairs and saw his stepfather lying on the floor, not moving. His mother was panicking, unsure of what to do. She cried, “Oh no, what do I do What do I do ” After she called 911, the operator on the phone told her to start CPR immediately. Jennifer was too scared and overwhelmed to act, but Anthony, who had learned CPR just weeks earlier, quickly stepped in.

【答案】 Anthony started performing CPR on his stepfather. Remembering the lessons from the health class, he carefully kept the right rhythm. For about eight minutes, he pressed on his stepfather’s chest and tried to keep him stable even when his pulse grew weaker. Anthony refused to give up and continued his effort until his stepfather finally started breathing again. Exhausted but relieved, Anthony stepped back as the rescue workers arrived. They immediately rushed Michael to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed that Anthony’s quick actions saved his stepfather’s life and also prevented serious brain damage while waiting for help to come.
After spending a week in the hospital, Michael was able to return home. He was deeply thankful for Anthony’s quick response. “I’m so lucky to have him here,” Michael said, giving Anthony a big hug. Anthony also realized the importance of learning CPR and first-aid skills. He thanked his friend David for encouraging him to learn. “If it weren’t for all this, I don’t think I would have learned CPR, and Michael might not have survived,” Anthony admitted. This whole experience didn’t just save his stepfather’s life, but it also made Anthony truly believe in the value of learning first-aid knowledge. Now, whenever Anthony runs into David, he smiles, “Thanks for making me take those lessons, David. You were right all along.”
