A man sat at a subway station in Washington D. C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded (鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most gifted musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing
24. Why did few people stop to listen to Joshua Bell playing
A. They were busy. B. It was too cold in the subway.
C. They were not interested in music. D. The performance was not good enough.
25. What did the parents do when children stopped to look at the violinist
A. They would give him some money. B. They would stop to enjoy the music.
C. They would applaud for the performance. D. They would ask them to continue walking.
26. Why did Joshua Bell play in the subway station
A. To make more money.
B. To practise his skills in playing music.
C. To make an advertisement for his concert.
D. To find out people’s reaction under such a condition.
27. What is the purpose of the text
A. To show us how to play music. B. To set us to think about our life.
C To report a subway performance. D. To tell us the importance of music.
C
Are you attracted to faraway places Do you prefer a vacation away from other tourists Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist (生态旅游者).
Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Ecuador’s remote Amazon Basin (盆地) is leading to that enlarging, and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like.
At the Ecolodge, a small group of small houses sits Kapawi Ecolodge in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve (保护区) and is only reached by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. As they do local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to enjoy the local culture as well as the natural environment.
The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011. The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower the local people.
You probably won’t start your own ecolodge (生态旅馆), but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions.
The world is full of fascinating places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well.
28. According to the text, the ecotourists should be __________.
A. those who like to go to their travelling places by hiking
B. those who like an easily-remembered natural environment
C. those who prefer a natural world which is what it used to be
D. those who prefer unique natural environment of cultural relics
29. What does the underlined word “snapshot” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Idea. B. Chance. C. Purpose. D. Adventure.
30. At the Kapawi ecolodge, visitors can’t __________.
A. reach there by air B. live in the Achuar reserve
C. explore the Amazon rainforest D. see many travelers from outside
31. We can learn from the text that __________.
A. the Kapawi Ecolodge owners are the Achuar in favor of ecotourism
B. the owners of Kapawi encourage tourists to enjoy the Achuar culture
C. the Achuar people have gained a lot by collecting money from ecotourists
D. the Kapawi Ecolodge will continue to run and manage the hotel after 2011
D
Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019, both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a hunger for knowledge. They are English coordinators(协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to inspire students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview.
Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources. While in Learning Challenges, I gave presentations on European culture and the fashion industry.
When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles(角度). Also, they mastered the skills — reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”
A student Yihane Abed, conducted research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.
Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”
32. What’s the purpose of creating Learning Challenges
A. To help some students learn more.
B. To guide students to work out successfully.
C. To raise students’ interest in visiting Europe.
D. To encourage English students to help others.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Ways that students used in the program.
B. Abilities that students got from the program.
C. Difficulties that students met in the program.
D. Topics that students chose from the program.
34. Which kind of research did Yihane Abed conduct
A. Teamwork. B. Travelling. C. The universe. D. The fashion industry.
35. What does Andersson think of the program
A. Hard. B. Formal. C. Necessary. D. Traditional.

It’s attractive to change up your training. Because for weeks or months, you were doing the things that you do when you can’t do a pull-up.____37____.You should not leave the resistance bands and the pull-down machines in the dust. They need to stay with you during the next moment of your journey.

____38____. For example, if you squatted(下蹲)225 pounds last week, that doesn’t mean you could also squat 225 today. We might say that your “range” is 200-225, and when you’re well-rested and on top of the world, you’re able to hit the top of that range. But even on a bad day, you know you can hit at least 200.
Pull-ups are like that, too.____39____, your strength was in the range of 50-55% of what it takes to do a pull-up. That means that when you get your first pull-up, your range might be something like 95-100%. The day you did the pull-up is a 100%day.The next day, maybe you’re only at 99%.____40____
What you need to do now is keep working until doing one pull-up is the bottom of your range of abilities. By the time you can do two or three pull-ups some days, you’ll be able to do one pull-up any day.
A. Once you can do sets of five pull-ups
B. Do not feel like you have to do all of them
C. And if you work hard, someday you’ll get there
D. You’ll wonder why you “can’t” do one anymore
E. Maybe when you started working towards a pull-up
F. But your first pull-up is not a graduation from all of that
G. We all have all kinds of abilities that we can do on any given day

“Mike, I could walk faster than those women run.” I made my usual comment (评论) after watching my son Mike run in a race. He laughed as he knew I wasn’t a runner. “Listen, Mom, how about running with me next year in this race ” Without thinking, I agreed to this challenge. I felt it’s a piece of cake!
Never did I imagine what the next year would bring. When it was almost time for this race to happen, Mike died in a car accident. A few of his friends knew this “challenge” I had agreed to with Mike. They started to encourage me to run the race. Honestly speaking, I had almost forgotten what I said.
Thinking deeply, I decided I should keep my promise to Mike. The first thing I did was buy some running clothes. I might look good, even though I hadn’t trained.
The day of the race came. I felt pretty sad, but I started off. It wasn’t long before a man started to run next to me. The man was very talkative. He kept saying how tired he was. The chatter went on and on. The race was over, and this man’s wife won! I was just happy to finish and keep my promise to Mike.
I came home, and my neighbor asked about the race. I told him what had happened. My neighbor laughed, “Kay, don’t you know what this guy was doing He thought you were the competition by the way you were dressed. He wanted his wife to win.” “Oh really! ”
The following year I did train. I even bought some tapes called “Win At Sports” and listened to them daily. If this man thought I was the competition, you could bet I was going to be the competition. His attitude in that race built a fire in me! The race was on!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The race began and I was all dressed and ready.

I am a big fan of Voice of English in our school radio station, and I really appreciate how you’re engaging with your listeners on a deeper level, and allowing us to participate in the discussion.
However, I do have a suggestion for the program. While the current topics are interesting, I think it would be even better if you occasionally featured some more lighthearted, fun topics for discussion. This would give us a chance to relax and enjoy ourselves.
I am excited to see how the program continues to develop. Thank you for providing us with this great program!

第二节 (满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
The race began and I was all dressed and ready. That day was very cold, but I didn’t care. I took off all my warm clothes and ran with only a shirt and shorts on. Nothing was going to weigh me down. The tapes I listened to talked about how to run the race. It gave ideas about staying behind and knowing when to make the move. I played the race over and over in my mind. Now the time had come to put it into practice.
I stayed behind this man’s wife almost the whole race. All of a sudden I saw HIM! There was her husband by the roadside and not in the race like the year before. I’ll never forget his words to his wife, “Watch out! She’s right behind you.” Well, mister, not anymore. Those were the words I needed to hear. I ran right past her and won the race! That running brought me comfort and relief. I fell on the grass and cried my eyes out.
