As a clueless, naive freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits (学分) I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major (专业). By the end of the class, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the wait-list (候补名单). That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit (提交) the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class ” He said he would.
So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite (相反).
Years later, I’d completed a degree (学位) in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent (经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft (草稿). But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact (联络) agents until I have a complete draft. But in the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year.
So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed (签约) me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication (出版) of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance — the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.

For my family, Saturday mornings were always for dim sum (点心). While many families had sandwiches or bread, we gathered around plates of shrimp dumplings (虾饺), rice rolls, and turnip cakes, with pots of hot tea.
Dim sum wasn’t just about food — it was about family. My mom often handed me the menu (菜单), written in Chinese. “If you want to eat it, you have to read it,” she said. I tried hard to find the right characters for “bun” or “rice”. She reminded me, “You need to keep up your language. Dim sum is about connection to family.”
We always went to the same noisy tea house, where my immigrant (移民) mother would come alive. Usually quiet and shy, my mom often smiled instead of talking, because her English wasn’t strong. But in the restaurant, she became a different person. She was full of energy and very friendly. She spoke easily with the waiters and waitresses, asking about their families and telling funny stories. Sometimes, they secretly wrote a small mark on our order paper. It was a special sign that gave us a 10% discount. For my mom, going out for dim sum was more than just eating. It made her feel at home. In that place, everything felt natural, warm, and easy.
One Saturday, my parents shared news: they would return to Hong Kong to care for my aging grandparents. I had just started college and was visiting home. I didn’t know what to say, so I looked away. Quietly, my mom placed the last shrimp dumpling into my bowl. “Eat up,” she said. “You might not get dim sum for a while.”
Later, I missed those mornings. At school, I bought frozen (冷冻) shrimp dumplings from a small Asian store. I ate them alone, but I always took a photo and sent it to my mom. She sent back pictures of her meals — fresh, bright, and warm. Even when we disagreed on life, we shared dim sum. It was our way of saying “I love you” without words.

A.She found a sense of belonging.

A.To stress the popularity of her family in the area.
B.To show the special bond Mom had with the staff.
C.To prove the restaurant was friendly and full of energy.
D.To explain why they ate dim sum on Saturday morning.
11.What message does the last paragraph convey (传达)
A.Frozen dim sum can taste just as good as in restaurants.
B.Shared lifestyle can keep love alive when words fail.
C.The author’s cooking couldn’t equal the tea-house’s.
D.The author’s mother couldn’t look after her forever.
As we prepare learners with the skills needed for the 21st century, there is a greater desire to further integrate (融合) technology into our classrooms. Whether it’s a K-12 or college classroom, it’s hard to find an environment that does not integrate technology in some form or another. In some cases, online learning has replaced the physical classroom altogether. As educators, we owe it to (归于) ourselves and our students to use these benefits. However, while technology offers significant advantages, simply integrating it as an alternative (另一种) source of learning or as another way to assess (评价) students is not as effective as we think.
We must remind ourselves that any form of learning technology should also be guided. These resources are just tools and require high-quality guided practice from the teachers. These tools, combined with guidance, can offer good instruction, practice and motivation. While technology can positively impact learning outcomes, it may be even more effective for some students if it’s teacher-led and integrated into a well-designed course.
Technology is rapidly changing the educational environment and challenging students to adapt accordingly. It can confuse students who are struggling to learn how to use a learning platform besides picking up the actual subject. Some may wonder, “Why should I waste time learning how to create a podcast (播客) when I could simply write the paper ”
It’s a reasonable question. We must not assume (假定) students who were raised using technology are always comfortable learning with these tools. Students may struggle if a teacher fails to teach the basic knowledge of the tools. Technology may mean little without proper goals, structures for its application, and trained teachers.
Educators (教育者) are also tasked with providing students the skills they need to stand out in a highly competitive (竞争激烈的) and technologically-based workplace. Many of the skills acquired through online classes are valuable professional skills. Students taught how to use multiple learning technologies effectively have a great advantage over those who are simply using technology to communicate in the online classroom. Regardless of the subjects we teach, integrating technology gives our students the opportunity to not only learn the content, but also to develop skills useful beyond our classrooms. Technology, when integrated and balanced properly with the course and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.
12.What is important to the learning technology
A.Instruction and revision (复习). B.Comprehension (理解) and application.
C.Guidance and arrangements (安排). D.Diversity (多样) and flexibility (灵活).
13.According to the passage, what should an educator do
A.Arrange online assignment for students.
B.Help students master online technology.
C.Prepare students with rules in the workplace.
D.Inform students of the value of the learning tools.
14.What is the author’s attitude toward learning technology
A.Negative. B.Uninterested. C.Unsure. D.Positive.
15.What can be a suitable title (标题) for the passage
A.Does Technology Boost Educational Effectiveness
B.Should Students Use Learning Technology As A Tool
C.Can Technology Put An End To Traditional Classrooms
D.Are Learning Skills More Important Than Learning Contents
A quiet space is often considered important for achieving the concentration, or focus, that leads to academic (学术的) success. But research shows that some students may benefit from breaking the silence with certain kinds of music while they study. Music has a powerful influence on both the body and the brain, in ways that can help students navigate the physical and emotional barriers that come with academic challenges.
One US study compared students who took a test to soft music with those who took the test under silent conditions. The study found that students taking a test to music not only completed more questions within a set time but also answered more questions correctly. Music has been further linked to improvements in memory and recall. Experts have found that when music stimulates mood (情绪) and motivation, students are able to learn more and to better demonstrate (展现) their knowledge.
A bit of mood music affects more than just memory and recall when students hit the books. Music can also relieve stress related to school. Scientists have learned that music engages the autonomic nervous system (自主神经系统), which not only controls the unconscious functions of the body but also influences emotions (情感). So it’s no surprise that researchers from the Group Health Research Institute concluded that certain kinds of background music can be just as effective at reducing stress as a massage (按摩). Furthermore, while the brain feels better with music, the body may as well. Research shows that certain types of music can make physical pain feel less intense. What’s more, calming music with a steady, meditative rhythm can help people sleep longer and more deeply.
However, some educators express concern that listening to music while trying to concentrate may do more harm than good. Loud music may have a negative influence on a student’s mood or act as a distraction.
Actually, the best approach (方法) may depend on the students themselves. Listening to music during study time may not mean a guaranteed (保证的) A for all students, but those who find it helpful should be allowed to plug in their headphones (耳机).
16.What does the underlined word “stimulates” in the second paragraph probably mean
A.Reduces. B.Inspires. C.Describes. D.Changes.

18.How does the author write this passage mainly
A.By presenting facts. B.By comparing students.
C.By listing numbers. D.By giving examples.
19.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The way to listen to music. B.The harm of using headphones.
C.The advice on what to do. D.The approaches of the researches.
Highly sensitive person, or HSP, is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. According to research, in every five people, there’s one HSP. 20 HSPs have strong self-consciousness; they may struggle to adapt to new circumstances, demonstrate seemingly inappropriate emotional responses in social situations, and easily become uncomfortable in response to light, sound or certain physical sensations. 21
The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟缓的) power”. Usually, people associate “insensitivity” with something bad, but insensitivity does not equal dullness. 22 That is, calmly facing the setbacks and downtime in life and firmly moving towards one’s own direction. It is the “means and wisdom to win a better life”, as a Japanese author writes in the book The Power of Insensitivity. According to him, the world will be better if we focus on the major goals and stay insensitive to anything else.
23 One of the important reasons is that behind insensitivity is strong self-awareness or self-confidence. Knowing yourself is difficult, but knowing yourself correctly is undoubtedly an excellent ability. One of the qualities shared by many successful people is: they all clearly know where their strengths are, what they want, and what direction to go.
To practice insensitivity, the first step is to avoid overthinking. Resist the urge to overanalyze situations, and redirect your focus towards actionable steps within your control. Secondly, don’t pay too much attention to the ups and downs of life at the moment. Rather, you should be looking forward. Additionally, set clear boundaries. 24 Remember not to get too involved in other people’s business and set limits that keep you safe from outside pressures.
As a unique wisdom of life, the power of insensitivity gives completely new inspiration to modern people. Once you become a bit “blunt” and slow down the pace, you will feel more comfortable.
A.Everyone can obtain the ability to be insensitive.
B.That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.
C.It emphasizes determination when it comes to difficulties.
D.Avoid focusing too much on what others are doing or thinking.
E.Regarding relationships, learn to view the problem as two parts.
F.Being a highly sensitive person can come with many challenges.
G.Why can insensitivity allow a person to better adapt in a competitive environment

Dear Alex,
I’m glad you asked me for advice about choosing a club. Personally, I would recommend you join the drama club.
First, it will give you more chances to practice spoken Chinese and understand Chinese culture better, which is very useful for an exchange student. Second, you are already good at math, so it might be more meaningful to try something new and broaden your experiences.
Of course, the final choice is yours. Whatever you decide, I believe you’ll enjoy it and make new friends.
Best regards,
Li Hua
Dear Alex,
I’m happy to hear that you are considering joining a school club. Both the drama club and the math club have their advantages.
In my opinion, the math club may be a better choice for you. First, you are good at problem-solving, and the club will allow you to develop this talent further. You can also take part in math competitions, which will be both challenging and rewarding. Second, you will meet classmates who share similar interests, making it easier for you to build close friendships and teamwork skills.
No matter which one you finally choose, I’m sure you will enjoy the experience and learn a lot.
Best regards,
Li Hua
