Hundreds of carp (鲤鱼) are swimming around a nest of baby birds. Doesn’t it look beautiful It is in fact a silk carpet — a handwoven (手工编织的) one from the Jinshan Silk Carpet Factory in Shanghai.
Cheng Meihua, now in her early seventies, is the director (厂长) of the factory. Her love for silk carpets started about half a century ago, when she was 20 years old. As soon as she saw these carpets, she couldn’t move her eyes from them. “These carpets are so beautiful! I want to learn the traditional craft (工艺) of making them,” she said.
Cheng turned out to be a talented silk weaver. Her very first piece of work was perfect. From then on, many more beautiful silk carpets came from her hands. Some of them are now in museums. But fully mastering this craft is no walk in the park. A world-class silk carpet can have thousands of colors. After all these years of hard work, Cheng can hardly close her left hand.
