On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women’s canoe (划艇) double 500m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic gold medal for China in the event.
Yet Xu’s journey to the Olympics was bumpy—she faced lots of difficulties.
In 2013, the news that women’s canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow. At that time, Xu’s coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring (退役).
It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year, she was promoted (晋升) as a human resources manager.
When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.
“I quit my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics,”Xu recalls. “I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do my best.”
To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training —“as cruel as hell”. She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10: 30 pm. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. “Only when I reached all my daily goals, I would go ashore,” Xu says.
The more than two months of grueling (艰辛的) training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women’s canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, and it totally affected my teenage years. But after a long struggle,I found a hobby that changed my life.
My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old.Having to get used to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression.I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it feel impossible for me to carry on.
At that time,I didn’t understand that depression was an illness.I remember a particular day when I couldn’t find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.
Other times,I even thought about killing myself—I just felt so trapped.I never really reached out for help either,as I felt that there wasn’t anyone who could have helped with my situation.
What turned my life around, however, was discovering street dancing.I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks,I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.
My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way.If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would have gone on to achieve the things I have,I wouldn’t have ever believed it.
Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there’s always someone,or something, out there to help you.

A. He turned to his old friends for help. B. He talked about it with his parents.
C. He put up with it by himself. D. He read many articles about it.
25.How did street dancing benefit the author
A. It helped him find a good job.
B. It taught him how to control his emotions perfectly.
C. It let him find many true friends.
D. It cheered him up and made him feel positive.
26.What does the author suggest people do when they feel down
A. Always be confident in themselves.
B. Find someone or something to rescue them.
C. Wait for help to come patiently.
D. Accept everything that life sends their way.
27.How might the author feel about his future
A. Hopeful. B. Fearful. C. Satisfied. D. Uncertain.

From last September, the new policy(政策) on students’ sleeping time set by the Ministry of Education has been officially carried out nationwide.According to the new policy, the first class in the morning at primary schools is not supposed to be earlier than 8:20,and that of high schools no earlier than 8:00.Schools are also not able to require students to come in before class for any learning activities. If possible, schools must also have nap(小睡) time during lunch break for students. The new policy shows the importance the government attaches to students’ health.
Deng Mengyu,a high school English teacher from Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School, said that their school already put some measures into effect to make sure that students are well rested and using their time effectively.“We encourage students to manage their morning time by themselves instead of sitting in the classroom,” she said. Some students need more sleep while others like doing exercise to start the day.So the school’s dormitories(宿舍) open doors at 6:00.At noon, students will have a one-hour nap time, ensuring that they can learn effectively in the afternoon.
Zheng Xiaowan,a high school student also from Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School, supports this policy. She believes that the quality(质量) of studying is not necessarily related to the length of time spent on it.“When well rested, students’ psychological(心理的) burden will be reduced, and they will be more ready for study tasks,” she said.
Meanwhile, not all the students support the policy.“More sleeping time can lead to oversleeping in the morning or staying up late at night,”said Zhang Fuyue from Chaoyang No.2 High School,Liaoning Province.
The intention of the policy is good. With efforts from both schools and students, the policy can lead to expected results.
28.What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A. Students have their sleeping time set by the government. B. Students will start their first class later than before.
C. Students needn’t do learning activities at school. D. Students are asked to take a nap at class.
29.How does Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School encourage students to make good use of their time
A. By encouraging students to do morning exercise. B. By opening their dorm doors as early as possible.
C. By shortening students’ nap time during lunch break. D. By giving students more freedom to manage their morning time.
30.What do paragraphs 3-4 mainly talk about
A. New requirements for students. B. The new policy’s effects on students.
C. Different attitudes to the new policy. D. Problems in the new policy.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward the new policy
A. Doubtful. B. Opposed. C. Supportive. D. Not clear.

There is a common belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority(优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling.
If spelling becomes the only point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will write only words within his spelling range(范围). That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content(内容)rather than technical(技术的)ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes.” It may have been a sharp criticism(批评) of the pupils’ technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had failed to read the composition(作文), which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had centered on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.
32.Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that _________.
A. students will be able to express their ideas more freely B. teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes
C. students will have more trust in writing D. students will learn to spell words correctly
33.Which of the following about school education is true
A. Schools are no longer interested in spelling.
B. Teachers ask their students to write words within their spelling range.
C. Schools attach importance to word spelling.
D. Teachers think the expression of the children is the most important.
34.The writer seems to think that the teacher’s judgment on that sensitive piece of writing is _________.
A. reasonable B. unfair C. foolish D. careless
35.The major point discussed in the passage is _________.
A. the importance of developing writing skills B. the importance of spelling
C. the correct way of marking composition D. the relationship between spelling and the content of a composition
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A flood can develop slowly, over time or rapidly, as in the case of flash floods which can develop in just a few minutes and without signs of rain.
36 This is the first thing that a person should do. It is unwise to just depend on history to decide whether your area is at risk of flooding.
Create an evacuation plan in case you have to evacuate your home. Pay attention to the safe areas you can go to. Prepare food kits for natural disasters that you can easily take with you if you have to leave your house. 37
If there is a possibility of a flash flood, leave your home and move to higher ground at once. Do not wait for instructions to move. Evacuation may also cause a shortage in the food supply. 38 To survive, one must depend on food storage.
While evacuating, avoid walking through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. 39
Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon (舍弃) the car and move to higher ground, when water is not moving or not more than a few inches deep. 40 If your car is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay in the car. If the water is rising inside the car, move on to the roof (顶部).
A. They don’t know where to look for shelter.
B. You and the car can be swept away quickly.
C. Use a stick to check the ground in front of you.
D. Be aware if the area you’re at is at risk of a flood.
E. There is no telling when another flood may happen.
F. It would help to store food for emergency situations.
G. During these conditions, hunger becomes a very real problem.
