Earth doesn’t stand straight up as it moves around the Sun. Instead, it is tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees. This tilt means that, at different times of the year, different parts of Earth receive more or less direct sunlight. When the North Pole tilts toward the Sun, the Northern Hemisphere (where countries like the U.S., China, and Europe are located) gets more sunlight. This makes days longer and temperatures warmer, creating summer. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere (including Australia and South America) gets less sunlight, making it winter there. Six months later, Earth moves to the opposite side of the Sun. Now, the South Pole tilts toward the Sun, bringing summer to the Southern Hemisphere and winter to the Northern Hemisphere. The equator (赤道), however, stays warm all year because it always receives direct sunlight. Places near the poles have very cold winters and less cold summers because sunlight there is always spread out over a larger area. Fun Fact: Some people think seasons happen because Earth gets closer or farther from the Sun. But actually, Earth’s distance from the Sun changes very little — it’s the tilt that really matters!
