What is 3-D
3-D means “three-dimensional(空间的)”. It describes objects that have three measurements: length, width, and depth.
For example, a drawing of a square is flat and has only length and width — that’s 2-D. But a real box has depth, too. You can touch it, turn it, and see it from all sides. That’s 3-D.
We see the world in 3-D because our two eyes work together to help us sense depth. This helps us tell how far away things are.
Complete the reading chart with the words and expressions from the passage.
Where: At a(n) __________
Who: Jenny, a girl born _____________
Problem to solve: Jenny’s artificial arm cost $80,000. But children like her ___________, so they always need new arms.
How did Easton come up with the idea

Age 14: A robotic arm. It was made from plastic blocks and __________.
Age 16: An artificial arm. It could __________ with brain signals, but weighed 3.6 kilograms.
Age 23: Another artificial arm. It _______ just 0.5 kilograms and ________ around $500.

How did Easton feel when he knew about Jenny’s artificial arm What did he decide to do
Easton felt surprised. He decided to lend a hand to people like her.
Answer the questions.
What did Easton do after the fair

to repair something broken or solve something wrong
to become successful
Was Easton pleased with his first artificial arm Why or why not
On one hand, Easton was pleased with it because the arm was able to move with brain signals of the user. But on the other hand, he thought it wasn’t good enough because it was too heavy for a child.
What did Easton do with his successful artificial arm Why did he do so
He posted his design online for free. He just wanted to help people in need.
1. Easton made a robotic arm with plastic blocks and fishing line.
2. Easton and Jenny met at a science fair.
3. Easton made an artificial arm with a 3-D printer.
4. Easton allowed people to use his design for free.
Retell the events.
Event 1: Before the science fair, Easton made a robotic arm with plastic blocks and fishing line.
Event 2: Then Easton went to the science fair with the robotic arm and met Jenny, a girl without an arm. At that moment, he decided to lend a hand to people like Jenny.
Event 3: After the fair, Easton tried to improve his work. He invented an artificial arm with a 3-D printer, but it was too heavy. Then he kept working on it. At the age of 23, he hit on success.

Learning to think for question 1
To understand the influence of something, you can compare the situation before and after the use of it.
Jenny’s life would be much easier. She can do more activities and the artificial arm looks better than a hook. It is also cheaper, so her family can save more money.
