Li Ming: It is a valuable experience. When I volunteer, I feel happy and proud of doing something kind for others. The main purpose of volunteering is to help others and make our community a better place.
Song Hua: Can I volunteer for something, too
Li Ming: Of course! Maybe you can plant trees or collect rubbish
on the side of the road to protect the environment. If you like animals, you can help care for pets at an animal shelter. You could also visit the elderly at a nursing home.

1. The main purpose of volunteering is to help others and make our community a better place. 志愿服务的主要目的是帮助他人，让我们的社区变得更美好。
Language points
（1）purpose是名词，意为“目的；用途”，主要短语有：
①the purpose of... ······的目的
The purpose of the meeting is to choose a manager.
这次会议的目的是选出一位经理。
②on purpose 故意
Jimmy hit his little brother in the eye, but he didn’t do it on purpose.
吉米打到了他弟弟的眼睛，但他不是故意的。
（2）本中的 to help others and make our community a better place 为动词不定式短语，在句中位于 is 之后作表语。动词不定式 (短语) 作表语时，常位于连系动词 be、seem 、appear 等后面。
My dream is to be a teacher. 我的梦想是成为一名教师。
He seems to be happy. 他看起来很高兴。
2. Maybe you can plant trees and collect rubbish on the side of the road to protect the environment. 也许你可以种树和捡路边的垃圾来保护环境。
（1）collect的用法：
①collect意为“收集；采集；收藏”，其后加名词或代词作宾语。
I like to collect toys. 我喜欢收集玩具。
②collect的词形转换：
a) collection是名词，意为“收藏品；一批物品”。
He has a collection of watches. 他收藏了一批手表。
b) collector是名词，意为“收藏家；收集者”。
The old man is a great collector.
这位老人是一名伟大的收藏家。
（2）side是名词，意为“一侧；旁边”，常用短语有：
on the left/right side 在左/右边
on both sides of... 在······的两边
side by side 并排；肩并肩地
on/from all sides 从四面八方；到处
from side to side 左右来回摇摆
He crossed the bridge to the other side of the river.
他过了桥去了河的另一边。
3. If you like animals, you can help care for pets at an animal shelter. 如果你喜欢动物，你可以在动物收容所帮助照顾宠物。
（1）if 作连词，意为“如果，假若”，引导条件状语从句。
If you hurry up, you’ll catch the trian.
如果你快点儿的话，你会赶上火车。
[注意]
在含有 if 引导的条件状语从句的主从复合句中，若主句和从句的动作均未发生，且主句为一般将来时、祈使句或含有情态动词的句子时，从句用一般现在时表示将来。
I’ll go with you if it doesn’t rain tomorrow.
如果明天不下雨，我将和你一起去。
（2）shelter是名词，意为“庇护所；遮蔽”。常用短语有：
take shelter from... 躲避······
under the shelter of... 在······的庇护下
They are in need of food and shelter.
他们急需食物和住处。
4. I looked it up on the internet! 我是在互联网上查找到的!
（1）look up意为“查找；查阅”，是“动词＋副词”结构的短语，名词作宾语时放于 look 与 up 中间或 up 后面均可，但代词作宾语时只能放于 look 与 up 中间。

＝Help me look the word up. 帮我查一下这个单词。

你若不理解它，就在词典中查它。
（2）look up 还可意为“抬头看；仰望；探访(某人)”。
He looked up and saw me.
他抬头看见了我。
5. I found something I wanted to do—reading stories to children at the library—and applied online. 我发现了一件我想做的事——在图书馆给孩子们读故事——并在线申请了。
apply是动词，意为“申请；应用”。常用短语有：
apply to do sth. 申请做某事
apply (to...) for... (向······)申请······
apply... to... 把······应用于······

so much 在此处相当于 very much，表示程度，常修饰动词。so
much还可修饰不可数名词。
