Introduction
Rockets are like big engines that help push (推) things in a forward (向前) or upward direction. We use them to launch spaceships into space or to shoot fireworks into the sky.
How Rockets Work
Rockets work by burning fuel (燃烧燃料). When the fuel burns, it produces a very hot gas. This gas shoots (射出) out of the back of the rocket and pushes it forward.
History
The Chinese were the first to make rockets, back in the 1200s. They filled bamboos with a special kind of powder (火药). This powder burnt very quickly and produced enough gas to shoot the rocket into the air. Later, in the 1700s, people started making rockets out of metal (金属). In the late 1800s, a Russian scientist, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, was the first person to design a liquid (液体的) fuel rocket, but he didn’t build one. An American engineer named Robert Goddard was the first person to do this in 1925. In 1957, the Soviet Union (苏联) used a rocket to launch the world’s first space satellite, Sputnik. Since then, many countries have used rockets to send things into space.
1. What happens when the fuel in a rocket burns
A. It creates a cool gas and the gas pushes the rocket upward.
B. It creates a cold gas and the gas pushes the rocket forward.
C. It creates a cool or hot gas and the gas pushes the rocket upward.

3. What did the Russian scientist Tsiolkovsky do in the late 1800s
A. He built the first rocket. B. He wrote down ideas about space travel.
C. He launched the first space satellite. D. He designed the first liquid fuel rocket.

A. To explain how rockets help people.
B. To describe the history of rockets and how they work.
C. To provide information about different types of rockets.
D. To discuss the history and influence of space exploration.

Mars (火星) is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System.
Is there life on Mars Nobody knows. We are sure that people cannot live on Mars so far. We need oxygen to live. But there is almost no oxygen on Mars.
Living on Mars is like living on a very high mountain. There is little air. It can be as hot as about 50℃ above zero at noon and as cold as about 100℃ below zero at night.
Plants and animals can grow on the Earth because it has a lot of carbon (碳). Like the Earth, Mars has this kind of material as well. So many people think there may be plants on Mars. And it has four different seasons. Of all the planets in the Solar System, the seasons of Mars are the most Earth-like.
Through a telescope, we see that Mars looks red. In some places, it seems grey. Sometimes, grey colour turns grey-green, then brown, then grey again. The grey-green colour may be a kind of plant life. It changes colour with the seasons.
Will people go to Mars one day If they do, they will have to take along with them their own oxygen, food, clothing, something to sleep in and so on.
5.Which may be the temperature on Mars at night
A.-150℃. B.50℃. C.-100℃. D.100℃.
6.Why many people think there may be plants on Mars
A.Because Mars has carbon.
B.Because Mars has a lot of air.
C.Because the temperature on Mars is good for plants.
D.Because the seasons of Mars are just the same as the Earth’s.
7.Through a telescope, how many colours can you find on Mars
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.
8.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE
A.Mars is the smallest planet in the Solar System.
B.There is enough oxygen on Mars for people.
C.Mars changes its colour with different seasons.
D.There may be life on Mars.

Welcome home! On April 16, 2022, astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu safely came back to Earth from the Tiangong space station. There are many interesting facts about their landing. Let’s take a look.
When the Shenzhou XII came back from the space station in 2021, it took about 27 hours because it travelled around the Earth 11 times. But this time, Shenzhou XIII only travelled around the Earth five times. It just took about one third of the time to return!
It is also very interesting that the landing position is upright (直立的). We can’t see many of this landing position in China’s space history. Only Shenzhou VI and Shenzhou XIII have successfully done so. To achieve this, astronauts must let go of the parachute (降落伞) quickly. Landing upright makes sure that astronauts have the softest landing.
After landing, the astronauts felt good about their bodies. But they still needed to sit on chairs. The long space journey changed their bodies. Their bones became weaker. In the next few months, they will get some exercise to become stronger.
The astronauts said they missed food on Earth! A tasty and healthy meal was waiting for them. It included noodles, porridge, potatoes, Sichuan sausages. They also had yogurt and fruits after the meal.
9.How long did it take for Shenzhou XIII to come back to Earth
A.11 hours. B.27 hours. C.5 hours. D.9 hours.
10.Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3
A.Shenzhou XIII is the first to land in the upright position.
B.Astronauts didn’t use the parachute during their landing.
C.Not many spaceships use the upright position in history.
D.This landing position is bad for the astronauts.
11.Why did the astronauts need to sit on chairs after landing
A.Because they were sick.
B.Because their bodies changed.
C.Because they were tired after landing.
D.Because they didn’t feel good about their bodies.
12.What’s the best title for the text
A.How to build a strong body for astronauts.
B.The big success of Shenzhou XIII in history.
C.Funny facts about Shenzhou XIII’s landing.
D.How can Shenzhou XIII land safely on Earth
(D)
Now, let me tell you more about astronauts. More than 500 people have been in space. The first man in space was Yuri Gagarin. He flew into space in 1961. His spaceship was just big enough for one person. John Glenn went to space again in 1998 at the age of 77. He was the oldest man to fly in space. Space isn’t just for men. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova. The first moon landing was made by Neil Armstrong in 1969. He said, “One small step for a man, one giant leap (跨越) for mankind.”
Yang Liwei became the first Chinese man in space in 2003. He circled the earth 14 times, all within 21 hours, 22 minutes and 45 seconds. “A small step in space is a huge one,” and Zhai Zhigang did Chinese astronaut’s first spacewalk in 2008. He stayed over 20 minutes in outer space. “Women hold half the sky.” Liu Yang became the first Chinese woman in space in 2012. China is going to make its first moon landing in 2030.
Would you like to be an astronaut when you finish school First, you must be healthy. Then you have to take tests. After you pass the tests, you are still not an astronaut. You need more training (训练) for new skills. There are many jobs to do in space. An astronaut must be ready for anything.

IV. 阅读与表达(共4小题, 前三题每小题2分, 第四题4分, 满分10分)
Astronauts have already visited the Moon and lived on space stations. They’ve never been to another planet, but they might visit Mars soon. The astronauts will spend about six months traveling to the planet, then about two years on the planet and about six months traveling back to the Earth. They will be away from the Earth for about three years, so they’ll need a lot of food!
It’s very expensive to take food into space. It costs about 120,000 dollars to carry something that weighs one kilogram. So an apple on Mars could cost 20,000 dollars! Of course, they will need to take quite a lot of food with them to feed the astronauts for three years. This amount of fresh food can not stay fresh, and is very expensive to take, so they need to find food that is not very heavy.
At the moment, astronauts in space stations eat dried food. It’s very light, so it doesn’t cost a lot of money to carry it into space. But astronauts stay healthier and happier if they eat fresh food. In the future, astronauts on Mars may grow vegetables like lettuce, spinach and carrots.
Astronauts on Mars will probably have special machines. They will use these machines to change beans into foods that taste like meat or cheese. They probably won’t eat real meat or cheese because it won’t be possible to keep animals in space.
