Carl Allamby started his car repair business at the tender age of 19. Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 workers, but Allamby had become uneasy, longing for something more. Therefore, at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management.
After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree, which later turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Biology classes reawakened a childhood dream that he had hidden somewhere deep within himself.
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科的) path. There are plenty of health benefits of spending time in the great outdoors. According to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, people who grew up with access to nature may have better mental health as adults than those who did not.
To test their hypothesis (假设) ，researchers sent questionnaires to 3, 585 adults aged 18 to 75 in four European cities on topics such as how often they visited natural spaces as children and now as adults. Participants were also given psychological test to determine the state of their mental health in the last month. Adults with low levels of nature exposure during childhood saw “significantly worse” mental health issues and did not view natural spaces as much importance in adulthood as those who spent more time growing up outside.
Researchers say that their findings show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces as it relates to developing an appreciation of nature and healthy psychological state in adulthood.
This is particularly significant, because almost three-quarters of Europeans currently live in urban areas with little access to green spaces. That number is expected to increase to 80 percent in the next three decades. Mental health has been shown to be negatively influenced by urban environments due to exposure to noise, crowds and a lack of green spaces among other things. Children who lead inactive lifestyles are more likely to have a lower quality of life and physical health.
“Many children in Europe lead an indoor lifestyle, so it would be desirable to make natural outdoor environments available, attractive and safe for them to play in," said study author Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, director of ISGlobal's Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative. "We make a call on policymakers to improve the availability of natural spaces for children and green schoolyards."

I recently read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, a psychologist who introduces the concept of different “zones” in life and work. These zones describe varying levels of ability and fulfillment (满足感) in our activities. The Zone of Disability involves tasks you’re not good at; the Zone of Ability includes tasks you’re capable of but find unsatisfying. Curious to identify my Zone of Genius, I took a related test. To my surprise, it turns out my Zone of Genius is “Networking.” I even considered framing (装裱) the results and hanging them over the fireplace. This situation is particularly amusing, because I am often perceived as an introvert (内向的人) — some would say I tend to escape from social contacts. Perceptions of introversion largely depend on cultural expectations, with different societies defining “introverted” and “extroverted” behaviors differently. In the United States, extroversion is often idealized. In contrast, in some East Asian cultures, such as Japan and China, value is associated with introversion. Differences also exist between Northern and Southern Europe. Research shows that the level of introversion differs widely across cultures, making it challenging to label introversion universally.
Contrary to the opinion that introverts are shy, research suggests they possess unique skills and strengths. The Harvard Grant Study shows that introverts tend to have fewer but deeper and more meaningful relationships. Another misunderstanding is that introverts do not make good leaders. However, studies show that introverted leaders can be just as effective — if not more so than the extroverts.
It’s vital to distinguish between introversion and shyness. Shyness is a fear of social judgment. However, introverts can be highly social, particularly in small groups or one-on-one conversations. Their preference for meaningful interaction over small talk makes them experts at forming deep, lasting relationships. So, the next time you meet an introvert, remember that their quiet behavior may hide a world of deep thoughts, keen insights, and powerful leadership potential.
