VII.Read and choose.
In our life, we may use water unreasonably. Let's take flushing (冲) toilets for example. Every day, huge amounts of clean fresh water are used to flush away human waste. This doesn't seem like the wisest use of our limited fresh water, does it
Some people are already rethinking such practices. They are looking for smarter ways to use water. I recently visited Jenfelder Au, a new neighborhood in Hamburg, Germany, with an experimental wastewater reuse project. His new system separates wastewater into three streams to be reused locally.
Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. “Gray water”from kitchen and bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets. And “black water” from toilets is sent to a local treatment plant to be turned into biogas(沼气).The system reduces water use by 30 percent and produces electricity for hundreds of homes.
Still, Dr. Upmanu Lall, a water treatment expert from the U.S. , holds a strong belief that more and more water will be saved. “We update our homes and cities every 10 to 15 years. We can make use of this cycle and encourage people to try new water technologies. Over time, more and more people will start using water wisely. ”
What is one example of “such practices” in Para 3 in the article
A. Recycling wastewater for drinking.
B. Not making use of people's sweat and urine.
C.Flushing human waste using fresh, clean water.
D. Sending wastewater to faraway treatment plants.
According to Jenfelder Au, people use__________to water the gardens.
rainwater B. seawater
C. water from local rivers D. water from kitchen sinks
Dr. Upmanu Lall's attitude towards the new water technologies is __________.
A. curious B. supportive C. doubtful D. uncertain

V. Answer the following questions.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how we manage water. Al helps us use water smartly and keeps it safe.
In water management, Al helps us guess how much water people will need. For example, if a city is facing a hot summer, Al can guess that people will use more water for their gardens and pools. AI can make well guess about future water needs by looking at past information, such as weather changes and how much water people used before. This helps water workers plan better and use water carefully.
Al also helps find leaks in water pipes. Take a small hole in a pipe under the street for example. Al can find it with special tools to stop the water running out. Fixing leaks quickly is important because it saves water and money. For example, Shanghai uses Al to find leaks and saves a lot of water every year.
Al is helpful in another way by checking water quality. Al can test water samples (样品) to see if the water is clean or harmful. This helps make sure that drinking water is safe for everyone. A town can use Al to check its drinking water every day to make sure it is clean.
However, there are some problems with using Al in water management. It can be costly to set up, and workers need training to use these systems. It is also very important to keep water data (数据) safe from bad people.
As Al gets better, it can help us manage water more effectively. With good planning, Al can make water use smarter and safer for the future.

V. Read the passage and complete the tasks.
Built over 2,200 years ago in the Qin Dynasty, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰水利工程) is one of the oldest and most famous water projects in the world. In ancient times, the Min River often flooded. In order to make better use of the river water and solve the problem of floods and droughts (干旱), the Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built in 256 BC, which was designed by ancient Chinese engineer Li Bing.
The system divides the Min River into two parts: the inner part and the outerpart, which play different roles in dry and rainy seasons. During dry seasons, 60% of the river water runs into the inner part to water farms. In rainy seasons, the outer part carries 60% of the water, protecting the Chengdu Plain against floods. By changing the river way, the system cleverly controls the water. However, as water keeps running through, it leaves behind — lots of silt (淤泥). So, it's necessary to dig and clean the riverbed every year. When Dujiangyan was first built, Li Bing put Shima (stone horse) in the riverbed. It served as a ruler and told people how deep to dig when cleaning the riverbed.
In Ming Dynasty, the first Wotie (lying iron stick) appeared and took the place of Shima. In dry seasons, people cleaned away part of the earth and sand from the riverbed. When they dug down and reached the Wotie, they knew they could stop.
The tradition of digging the riverbed has been lasting for over 2,000 years. People continued to repair Dujiangyan, and new Woties were placed in the riverbed. Today, four Woties lie side by side underwater, which were made in different ages from Ming Dynasty to the new China. Although workers have better tools now, ___________.

(A层)
Dear fellow students,
Water is one of the most precious resources on the Earth. However, few students have the awareness of saving it in daily life. I suggest we take action now to save water.
Here’s what we can do ---- turn off the tap while brushing our teeth, take a shower instead of a bath, and report the dripping taps to our parents. Besides, we should also spread the ideas to people around us. For example, we can put up signs about saving water in the community.
Every drop of water counts! Let’s act now to ensure a sustainable future. Together, we can make a difference!
(B层)
Dear fellow students,
As we all know, water is the source of life, yet many parts of the world are facing severe water shortages. Here at Guangming Middle School, we should take the lead in conserving this precious resource. Simple actions like turning off taps completely, reporting leaks promptly, and reusing water whenever possible can make a difference.
In our daily life, we can adopt water-saving habits such as taking shorter showers, running dishwashers and washing machine only when they are full, and collecting rainwater for plants. These small changes, when practiced by all of us, will significantly reduce water waste.
Let’s work together to protect our planet’s water resources. Every drop counts, and every effort matters. Start today, and inspire others to join this important cause!
