Dear Bob,
You asked me about the Awakening of Insects (惊蛰). Now let me tell you something about it.
As the third one of the 24 Chinese Solar Terms, the Awakening of Insects means the fact that spring thunder awakens the animals sleeping in winter, and that the earth begins to come back to life.
Just as the old Chinese saying goes, once the Awakening of Insects comes, spring ploughing (耕种) never rests. It is the major time for spring farming activities. During this time, most parts of China get warmer and warmer, with the temperatures above 10°C. The days get longer and there is a marked increase in sunshine. It is good for farming.
People like going fishing during this time. Fishing can make people relaxed, especially for people in the city. Driving to the countryside, fishing in a lake, bathing in the sunlight and enjoying the singing of birds make for a perfect weekend in spring.
Eating pears around the Awakening of Insects is a widely-practised custom (习俗) in China. As the weather gets warmer and the air becomes dry, people feel their mouths are dry, which can cause colds or coughs (咳嗽). A pear is sweet, juicy and cold. It is especially good for people’s health at this time of year.

The Chinese calendar has 24 Solar Terms. The Minor Snow is the 20th Solar Term and starts on 22 November. Here are several traditions you should know about the Minor Snow.
Wearing hats and scarves. When the Minor Snow comes, the wind from the north-east is strong. Many people don’t wear hats or scarves yet. But it’s necessary to keep your head warm because it’s where all the body’s energy lines meet.
Drinking soup. The air inside is dry during the Minor Snow, and your nose and mouth might feel dry. This can cause “inner heat” in your body. To help, drink more hot soup.
Eating rice cakes. In some areas of southern China, people eat rice cakes during the Minor Snow. In ancient times, rice cakes were a traditional festival offering (祭品) to the bull god.
Making pickled (腌制的) vegetables and pork. After the Minor Snow, it’s cold and dry, which is perfect for making pickled vegetables and pork. By the Chinese New Year, they’re ready to eat. People in the Yangtze River area usually make pickled vegetables to celebrate the Minor Snow.
