Love Is in the Air is one of the most popular wedding songs — it describes the invisible magic of this incredible feeling. For Joe l and Shelley, love is literally in the air — a couple who met 30 years ago as US Air Force jet pilots now fly Southwest Airlines planes together as a dream team.
Shelley grew up in Iowa and later moved to Colorado, where Joel resided. In the late 1980s, they both went to study at the United States Air Force Academy to become professional pilots. Soon, four years at the academy passed without them actually meeting each other, although Joel heard of this girl as there were not many women studying there.
A few more years later, they finally met when they got the same first assignment. When Shelley walked into the office, Joel was instantly attracted by her. “She’s taller than me. She’s an athlete, a natural leader, and just an impressive person. I didn’t know if she would consider going out with me,” Joel recalled.
As time went by, Joel’s gentle and warm nature appealed to Shelley, who said, “He just really has a sensitive heart to people around him.”
A year later, they started dating during their first deployment (调动) abroad — the couple would spend hours talking about everything, getting to know each other’s darkest secrets and most sacred wishes. In their hearts they both knew that they had found the one, so a few months after they came back to their country, they tied the knot.
In the early 2000s, the married couple welcomed their twins and Shelley decided to take some time off flying and worked at US Air National Guard while Joel became a commercial pilot. Once the kids left the nest, Shelley found herself dreaming about flying again despite not being in the cockpit (驾驶舱) for over two decades.
Joel loved the idea and encouraged Shelley to go on to study and update her pilot qualifications. In 2023, Shelley joined Joel at Southwest!
Now the lovebirds fly together, Joel as the captain and Shelley as the first officer.;

When you swim on the beach and sea, have you ever accidentally drunk the seawater How did it feel It must have tasted salty. So, why is the seawater salty
Seawater is water that comes from the ocean. Seawater can be salty because it contains an average salt content of 3.5%. This is also a place for the salt farmers to produce cooking salt and other salt.
Some theories explain that seawater comes from rainwater that falls and flows through rivers and estuaries (河口) where the seawater will be fully filled and again formed clouds because the steam uses the help of the sun. When we talk about this, we talk about the rainwater cycle. But when the rainwater cycle occurs, the water that passes through the river carries mineral salts. These mineral salts are obtained from various places of the land starting from rocks and soils that the rainwater flows through, these remaining mineral salts make seawater salty, so the salinity of seawater is different in each part of the world. But it is certain that seawater is salty or has high salinity.
The saltiest sea in the world is the Red Sea. There the temperature is extremely hot so that evaporation (蒸发) is greatly carried out. High evaporation, coupled with little rainfall and little input of water from the river, causes its highest level of salinity. There is also the Dead Sea, which is nine times saltier. Due to the high salinity, when you swim there, you can float. However, the Dead Sea is not a sea at all which is a lake geographically.;

B.To make the article interesting.
C.To introduce a famous beach.
D.To bring in the topic.;
23.Where is the salt in seawater originated from
A.Land. B.Ocean. C.Rain. D.Cloud.;
24.What can we infer about the Red Sea
A.Its salinity is higher than that of the Dead Sea.
B.The climate there causes the highest salt level.
C.People are in danger when they swim there.
D.The land around it contains the most salt.;
25.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.The reason why the seawater tastes salty
B.The reason why the Dead Sea is not a sea
C.The reason why the rainwater cycle occurs
D.The reason why the sea looks blue and green
Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working bard - he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night – but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually achieve much.
This phenomenon cam be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who looks through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working. The guy who brings three meals, a blanket. and six-pack of Red Bull to the study zone in preparation for an all-day paper-writing marathon is also pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to achieve the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work - it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. Ii never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students. on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason It not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a smallest amount of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal To understand their way to success, consider the following simple formula(公式): work achieved = time spent * intensity of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to achieve something by pseudo-working. You need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.;
26.Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working
A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B.Mike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.
C.Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
D.Alice and Sara are sitting on the couth reading their favorite books.;
27.Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that they
A.want to spend more time on study.
B.are eager to follow their friends’ way.
C.have gotten used to their study approach.
D.are unaware of their pseudo-working.;
28.What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5
A.Possible.
B.Best.
C.Least.
D.Accurate.;
29.Why does the author mention the formula in the text
A.To show the benefit of working hard.
B.To prove the necessity of achieving work.
C.To emphasize the importance of concentration.
D.To explain the reason for spending much time.
Have you ever woken up at midnight with upsetting thoughts Maybe you argued with your partner. Perhaps you are worrying about an interview. These are common in our life. But they can make it hard to see reality as it is. 30 And thus we may lose sleep and have trouble concentrating. The following methods are helpful.
31 This method has the benefit of revealing the temporary nature of your thoughts. It can also help to make it easier to let them go. There are many mindfulness practices that might help with this. For example, a simple breath meditation may do the trick. Thoughts can still come into your head as you practice this.
Try to move preferably outside. Physical exercise can be helpful. 32 Walking in the woods can reduce rumination (沉思) more than walking along a road for the same amount of time. If we go out walking, it may help to keep our attention on our surroundings and prevent troubling thoughts from cropping up.
Stop feeding the fire and redirect your attention. If we’re ruminating over things, we may need to focus on better things. We can take a break from social media and practice gratitude for the good in our lives. We can also take action with like-minded people. 33
Talk to a trusted person or maybe a therapist. We can turn to others for help. Whether they do it with humor or by offering wisdom, sometimes getting an outsider’s perspective can help us a lot. 34 If we don’t have such kind of people, seeing a therapist might be our best option.
A.Push away our negative thoughts.
B.Learn to practice mindful awareness.
C.Being outside in nature is one of the best ways.
D.They will keep us locked into negative thinking patterns.
E.We need to give ourselves some space and not assume the worst.
F.These can help reduce our worry while pointing us in a right direction.
G.We should try to find the right person who can listen well and offer empathy.

“Mary! Come and see what I have brought home!” My father opened the door and shouted cheerfully.
“Is it a dog ” I asked when I saw him hugging a huge creature in his arms.
My father nodded and put the dog on the floor. When it ran toward me, I pressed my hands tightly over my mouth to hold back a scream. I turned around and rushed back to my room. I locked up the door as soon as I could.
Since I was attacked by a wild dog two months ago, I had been living in constant fear of dogs. I was confused why my father was so happy to bring home such a scary thing. So I decided to stay in my room until the dog was gone. After what seemed like ages, I heard the door open and shut.
“Finally!” I breathed in relief and opened the door cautiously.
To my shock, I felt something wet touching my foot. It was the dog! I froze there, as if my feet were rooted to the ground. When I regained my senses, I screamed, “Daddy! It is the dog! Help! It wants to bite me! Get it away from me!”
My father was standing by the other side of the door,folding his arms and encouraged me,“It is not going to eat you! Mary, don’t be so scared. Go on! Touch it!”
I tried my best to control my fear and bent down to touch the dog. But I could not do it due to my constant and uncontrollable shaking.
“Never! I will never touch that dirty thing! Take it away!” I shouted.
My father turned a deaf ear to my request. In despair, I picked up a tennis ball that happened to be on the floor and threw it at the dog.

五、书信写作
60.【答案】Dear classmates,
Our group has just had a heated discussion debate on whether it is necessary to stay up late to study, and now on behalf of our group, I’d like to present our view.
As far as we are concerned, it is unnecessary to stay up late to study. First of all, staying up late at night does great harm to our health, which may cause headaches and even make us ill. Besides, if we stay up late frequently, we may have trouble concentrating on studies at school. As a result, we’ll soon fall behind with the school work.
Therefore, in order to get good grades and gain enough sleep, our group highly recommends all of us to make a proper daily study plan and not to leave it until night. Only in this way can we have a productive and healthy lifestyle.
Thanks for listening!

61.【答案】One possible version:
The ball missed the target. Instead, it rolled across the living room. The dog ran excitedly after the ball and brought it back to me. When it put the ball beside my feet and looked up at me with a big smile on its face, my heart somehow softened. I reached out and tried to touch it. Obviously encouraged by my friendlier reaction, the dog started rubbing its body against one of my legs.
But the next moment I was reminded of the awful experience. My hand stopped in the middle way. It seemed that the dog understood what I was thinking about. It lay down at my feet and appeared so sad that I forced myself to touch its fur, which the dog seemed to be quite enjoying. Since then I have overcome my fear and we have become the best friends. It followed me everywhere and drove away any unfriendly dogs as a faithful bodyguard.
