The National Teen Book Fairs across the US will bring amazing author meetups, book-themed activities, and the latest young adult reads — perfect for every book fan.
Picking the Best Fair for You
East Coast fairs are known for hosting popular young adult authors, where you can chat and get books signed. West Coast fairs focus on interactive workshops, such as short story writing or book cover design. Check dates first: Some last just 3 days, others a whole week. Think about what matters most to you — meeting authors, trying workshops, or discovering new books — before you decide.
Tickets and Costs
Buy tickets early: Fairs offer discounts for advance purchases. If you want to visit more than once, get multi-day passes — they’re cheaper than buying single-day tickets each time. Some fairs have preview night tickets (more expensive, but let you enter early to avoid crowds and grab limited-edition books). Many also include free small workshops (like poetry writing) in the entry price — no extra cost
Travel Tips
If you’re flying to a fair in another city, take time to compare prices at different airports nearby. For example, a fair in Chicago might be easy to reach from both O’ Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport, and one could have cheaper flights than the other. Renting a car can be helpful too, since it lets you go to the fair whenever you want and even explore the city’s local bookstores after. But remember: Parking at the fair venues can be hard to find, so arrive early to get a spot, or ask if the fair offers free shuttle buses from nearby subway stations.
1. How should one choose a book fair according to the text
A. By comparing ticket prices. B. By evaluating personal needs.
C. By considering travel distance. D. By checking author popularity.
2. What is the advantage of early ticket purchase
A. Obtaining price reductions. B. Entering the fair before others.
C. Getting limited-edition books. D. Guaranteeing more workshops.
3. What can we say about fair transportation
A. It involves costly shuttles. B. It always proves convenient.
C. It ignores airport choices. D. It demands advance planning.

Students at Purdue University have created a robot Purdubik’s Cube, which can solve a Rubik’s Cube (魔方) faster than any robot ever.
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik. It rapidly became a popular puzzle worldwide. At first, people just wanted to solve the puzzle. But soon, one group of users had a new goal — to solve the cube as quickly as possible. These people are known as “speedcubers”
Human speedcubers can solve a Rubik’s Cube in seconds, with the fastest time around 3.05 seconds. But robots, powered by computers and fast-moving parts, do even better. In 2020, MIT students set a record with a robot that solved it in 0.380 seconds. That made an impression on Matthew Patrohay, who was in high school at the time. “I thought, ‘That’s a really cool project. I’d love to try and beat it someday,’” said Patrohay. Now Patrohay and three other Purdue students have built a robot that can solve a Rubik’s Cube far faster. Their “Purdubik’s Cube” robot can solve a cube in 0.103 seconds— roughly one-tenth of a second.
Last year, a group of professional engineers working for Mitsubishi set the previous world record with a robot that solved the cube in 0.305 seconds. Patrohay, Aden Hurd, Junpei Ota, and Alex Berta’s robot is nearly three times faster — earning it a Guinness World Record. They met through a program for real-world work experience, in which they built needed skills for a senior project and got financial support from a company.
Purdubik’s Cube uses cameras and “computer vision” to detect each square’s color quickly. Its program uses special strategies to solve the puzzle fast, with precise motion control. To operate this quickly, it uses a special cube that sits at the center of the robot’s “arms” — letting it turn the cube’s sides. But ordinary cubes fall apart at such speeds, so students made a stronger one. Patrohay says the robot is so fast that “before you even realize it’s moving, we’ve solved it”
4. What do we know about the Rubik’s Cube
A. It gained global popularity early. B. It was inspired by school speedcubers.
C. It was first solved by MIT students. D. It remains unchanged since its creation.
5. Which can best describe Patrohay
A. Caring. B. Helpful. C. Competitive. D. Demanding.
6. What contributed to Patrohay and his team’s Purdubik’s Cube
A. Mitsubishi’s previous world record. B. The Guinness World Record recognition.
C. An initiative building hands-on skills. D. Support from professional speedcubers.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The strengthened cube design. B. The factors behind its record-breaking rate.
C. The cube’s color detection. D. The speed-solving prediction.

Scientists have reported on an unusual hybrid (杂交) bird spotted in Texas — a cross between a blue jay and a green jay.
Brian Stokes is a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on green jays — common birds in Central America and Mexico. To track where green jays appear, he monitored social media posts about birds. In 2023, he saw a photo of a unique bird there: It was blue, similar to the blue jay (common in Eastern North America), but had different colors. Unlike blue jays, which have white faces, this bird had a black facial mark.
Stokes went to see the bird for himself. Fortunately, he was able to catch the bird. Quickly, he got a few pictures, and took a blood sample. Working with a biology professor at the university, Stokes confirmed that the bird was a hybrid. The father was a blue jay and the mother was a green jay. Such a hybrid is very surprising. Long, long ago, both kinds of jays developed from the same kind of bird. But for seven million years, their species have been completely separate.
In general, animal hybrids happen when animals begin turning up in places where they don’t normally exist. For example, as the Arctic has warmed up because of climate change, polar bears have been travelling farther south in search of food. This has brought them in contact with grizzly bears, which has resulted in hybrids of the two species. These are sometimes called grolar.
The scientists say the jay hybrid is also likely the result of climate change. In the mid-1900s, the activity ranges of the two birds did not really overlap. But in recent years, as the climate has warmed, green jays have been moving farther north, and blue jays have been travelling farther west. Eventually, they have seen each other in the regions of Texas, creating conditions for hybridization.
8. How did Stokes initially conduct research on green jays
A. He observed them in the field. B. He partnered with a professor.
C. He checked the posts online. D. He took their blood samples.
9. What makes the discovery of this hybrid surprising
A. It’s a cross of distant species. B. It has mixed color patterns.
C. It was discovered in Texas. D. It presents unique facial marks.
10 Why does the author mention grolar
A. To introduce a new species. B. To compare bear behavior.
C To present an example. D. To support a viewpoint.
11. What does the underlined word “overlap” in the last paragraph mean
A. Meet. B. Exchange. C. Disappear. D. Form.

Parents across America are scheduling something once considered natural: quality time with their own children. New survey results reveal that nearly half of parents now make formal “appointments” for family bonding. The findings show how digital distractions (干扰) and packed schedules have reshaped everyday family life.
The study of 2,000 parents of children under 18 found that 48% schedule time for family connection. Another 41% set aside planned date nights with partners, and 35% even reserve exercise sessions. What once happened naturally—conversation, relaxation, connection—now often requires a calendar reminder. The survey highlights how constant distractions have made family life more structured and less free-flowing.
One key cause is using phones. Parents stated that kids had their phones in hand during just 1 out of 2 of their conversations. At the same time, romantic partners got distracted by their devices during nearly 3 in 5 of their talks. And even when people managed to sit down with each other, other pressures started to come in: Nearly half struggle with packed schedules, just half with household tasks, close to two-fifths with work responsibilities, and roughly a third with activities outside the home.
The survey points to a broader issue: Many families feel disconnected even when surrounded by people. More than one in five parents said it has been a year or more since they had an honest, face-to-face conversation about hopes and dreams. Constant phone checking has become the norm, with 57% of parents frequently opening their devices only to find no new messages. It’s no surprise, then, that 71% of parents said they wished they could go back to a less digitally connected world.
Fighting back, 82% have set up device-free zones, particularly during dinner (47%), family movie nights (38%), and outings (28%), seeking moments of laughter, and looking to the outdoors as a place where conversations feel real again.
12. What key phenomenon does the survey reveal
A Family time needs planning now.
B. Pressures reduce family relaxation.
C. Kids’ phone use worries parents.
D. Honest conversations disappear totally.
13. Which is the percentage of a couple being interrupted by mobiles while talking
A. About 33%. B. About 40%. C. About 50%. D. About 60%.
14. What’s parents’ attitude to the growing disconnection in the house
A. Unconcerned. B. Active. C. Discouraged. D. Unclear.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. More Mobile Phones in Families B. Real Challenges of Busy Parents
C. Digital Age’s Family Connection D. More and More Family Interactions

In a recent conversation one person asked, “What are the characteristics of an effective teacher ” I had already read quite a few excellent remarks describing what such a teacher does to be effective. ____16____
I had an amazing psychology professor in college. He was on fire every class period and his enthusiasm was infectious. But what I remember most are the psychological experiments in which we participated. ____17____ I now realize his brilliance lay not in merely lecturing, but in designing learning experiences that created lasting understanding.
Truly great teachers share this quality: They shape educational experiences that allow students to become active “leaders of their own learning”. ____18____ Whether through practical projects, emotional connection, or thinking for themselves, students learn best by being involved, but not by depending on teachers. For example, many excellent teachers use project-based learning, where students investigate real questions based on key knowledge.
____19____ Outstanding teachers also encourage curiosity, show care, and adjust to how different students learn. They build trust and let students ask questions and learn from errors. Their teaching belief is clear and important: Real learning happens when students take part. Good teachers know that they can’t make students learn just by talking. Students have to be willing to experience it themselves.
So, good teachers do more than share knowledge. They build an environment that makes students want to learn — raising interest, helping them explore, and guiding them to think. ____20____ What students learn in this way is not only deep but also stays with them, often going beyond school and influencing how they deal with problems in life.
A. I often ask myself why students like learning alone.
B. Different teachers have different teaching approaches.
C. Besides organizing tasks, they also know when to step back.
D. Such an environment makes learning easier and more lasting.
E. Now I still remember every detail and the supporting theories.
F. However, I couldn’t help thinking about the best teacher I had.
G. But helping students learn independently isn’t their only advantage.

Last term, our school launched a project to transform a litter-filled corner behind the gym into a small botanical garden — and my class was given the responsibility of taking care of it. We stared at the messy spot during the first meeting, wondering how we’d ever turn it into a garden. Most of us immediately complained about the assignment. We thought it would be a total waste of time, especially since the midterm exams were just around the corner, and we all felt pressed for study time.
But our biology teacher Thorne asked us not to worry about the exams, saying, “Apart from studying, labor is also a form of pleasure.”
On the first day of our labor, when we were bending over to clear weeds and turn the soil, some of us had already gotten mud on our shoes while pulling out thick weeds, and the hot sun made us sweat a lot. Kael suddenly dropped his garden fork to the ground and said loudly, “This is silly! We should be sitting in the classroom reviewing our subjects, not digging around in this dirt!” His words struck a note with many classmates. Some pulled out their flashcards and looked through them with obvious annoyance, as if to prove how much precious study time we were losing. The complaints made others hesitate; nearly half the class sided with Kael. Again, Thorne stepped up and comforted us, saying, “Calm down, kids! You will soon witness the fruits of your labor.”
Two weeks passed, and we checked the soil every day after class, hoping to see even a tiny green spot, but nothing showed up. Not a single sunflower sprout (幼芽) had appeared in the soil we’d tended so carefully. Some of us felt disappointed and thought the seeds must be dead. We went to ask our biology teacher Thorne whether we could stop that pointless assignment. Thorne told us with his usual calm smile to wait patiently.

Dear David,
I’m writing to invite you to our “Read a Book with Overseas Pen Friends” activity to be held by our school next month. The activity aims to help us learn from each other through reading.
We’ll pick one book together first, and then have online talks every two weeks to share ideas. I recommend Selected Readings from The Analects — it has Confucius’ wise ideas, which can help you understand Chinese culture in a simple way.
Hope you’ll join us! If you agree, just e-mail me back by this weekend. I’ll send you the full book list soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Then, one morning Thorne called us over to the garden. He got down on his knees, and with a gentle gesture, he pointed to the soil. To our surprise, tiny green sunflower shoots had begun to push through the surface, delicate but bright. We crowded around the plot, rushing to get water and carefully water them, and the tension that had been building up among us slowly eased away. As the weeks went by, we kept visiting the garden — watering and weeding, no longer complaining about “wasting time”.
By late spring, we saw tall sunflowers standing straight and proud there. Once messy, the corner now came alive! Soon, the sunflowers grew tall enough to tower over us, and those heads, bright yellow like tiny suns, shone warmly in the soft sunlight. A light wind blew, making the flowers nod gently, as if saying thanks for all the care we’d put in these weeks. We once thought tending it wasted study time, but now we know: Learning matters, yet labor brings the joy of success. That lesson, we all agreed, was far more valuable than any score we could get on the midterms.
