Daniel is reading an article about Zhalong Nature Reserve. Read with him
and answer the questions below.
Zhang Nature Reserve is in Heilongjiang Province in the north-east of China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and cover for a lot of wildlife. It is home to some rare birds. For example, about 40% of red-crowned cranes live in Zhalong.
Many birds live in Zhalong all year round, while some go there only for a short stay. Most birds are active in the daytime, so you can easily watch them there.
Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for farms and buildings. This will lead to less space for wildlife. Moreover, if fishermen keep fishing there, the birds will not have enough food to eat. Now
the Chinese government has made laws to prevent all these things in Zhalong.
1 Why is Zhalong an important place for the birds
Because it provides food and cover for them. It’s also home to some rare birds and a lot of wild life. Many birds live there all year round.
2 What other actions can we take to help protect wetlands
We can plant more trees around the wetlands. We can also educate more people about the importance of wetlands and ask them not to litter there.(答案不唯一)
思考:What other nature reserves do you know
I know the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan. It’s famous for protecting pandas. I also know the Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve in Jilin. There are many rare plants and animals there.(答案不唯一)

Daniel and Amy are talking about what they can do to help protect forests.
Work in pairs and talk about the topic. Use the conversation below as a model.
Amy: What can we do to help protect forests, Daniel
Daniel: Well,we should not throw rubbish in forests. We can also work with a clean-up project.
Amy: That’s a good idea. Rubbish causes pollution and damages the ecosystem in
forests.
Daniel: That’s true. And maybe we can take our own chopsticks when eating out. It’s a great way to save trees.
Amy: Yes. We can encourage people to protect forests too.
Daniel: You said it! We can show people different ways to save forests.
Amy: Yes! Education and knowledge are useful tools to help keep
forests safe.
Daniel: I agree.
“You said it!” is a common way to express agreement.

I am writing today to ask for your help in protecting the ocean.
Dear Sir or Madam,
The ocean is home to many kinds of sea life. It provides us with food and offers us space to have fun. However, the ocean is facing many problems.
Pollution is one of the biggest problem. There are millions of tons of plastic waste in the ocean. Also, wastewater from factories and houses travels to the ocean and causes pollution. This will harm or even kill sea life.
It is meaningful to join an environmental group and work as a volunteer. Please join us. Together we can help protect the ocean.
Yours sincerely,
Zhao Min
We often end a proposal with a strong and moving sentence to encourage the reader to take action.
Tip
承上启下
承上启下是指在文章中,通过特定的语句或段落,将上文的内容与下文的内容连接起来,使文章前后呼应,形成一个有机的整体。如作者通过“However, the ocean is facing many problems.”这一转折句实现承上启下,使文章从积极方面的描述平稳过渡到消极现状的呈现,增强了文章的连贯性,让读者能够顺畅地跟上作者的思路。

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you today because the tropical rainforest, a wonderful place full of life, is in trouble. We need to do something to save it.
I want to ask you to help protect the tropical rainforest. It is very important for our planet. The tropical rainforest is home to many amazing animals and plants. There are colorful birds, cute monkeys, tall trees and beautiful flowers. They all live happily there.
One of the main problems is that people cut down too many trees.
They want to make space for farms or build houses. But this makes many animals lose their homes.
Sample
Another problem is that some people hunt animals in the rainforest. This is bad because some animals are becoming fewer and fewer.
Together we can protect the tropical rainforest. We can tell more people
how important it is. We can also ask adults not to cut down too many trees or hunt animals. Let’s work together to keep the tropical rainforest a happy home for all the living things there.
Yours sincerely,

参考范文
Saying No to Plastics
In recent years, we have to face the plastic pollution problems. There are millions of tons of plastic waste in the ocean. This will harm or even kill sea life. Therefore, we must take action to stop plastic pollution.
As students, we should reduce the use of plastics. First, we should use a cloth bag while we are shopping. Second, even if we need to use plastic bags, we should recycle and make full use of them. Third, we are supposed to bring our own cups instead of using plastic cups.
All in all, we should reduce the use of plastics to protect the earth and make it greener.
