Mike’s shaved head and tattooed(有纹身的) arms made mothers pull their children closer on the beach. I was a new lifeguard that summer, and on my first shift I admitted to myself: Mike looked more like a warning than a watcher.
One August dusk the sea turned unpleasant. A rip(离岸流) current dragged two small boys seaward while their mother, frozen in panic, screamed from the shore. Mike was off the tower before the whistle finished echoing. He entered the water sideways, cutting across the current until he was level with the boys, then swam sideways again to escape the rip. I watched from the sand, helpless. In less than four minutes he returned, a child tucked under each arm like footballs.
The mother ran forward, snatched her sons and spun away without a word. No thank-you, no eye-contact—just the back of her T-shirt disappearing into the crowd. I waited for Mike to swear or shrug. He simply jogged back to his tower, eyes already scanning the next wave.
Later I asked why he stayed silent. He laughed, salt water still on his lashes. “Words don’t keep kids alive, watching does.” He added, “She was scared. Fear makes people forget manners.”
That night I wrote in my logbook: Heroism is sometimes missed because it doesn’t look like the stories we were promised. Mike’s pay was twelve dollars an hour, but the sea had measured him at a different rate.
Ten years on, whenever I feel judgement rising in my throat, I remember the scar across Mike’s scalp and the two boys who will never know the name of the man who gave them the rest of their lives. I promised myself never to let appearance drown reality again.
4. What first impression did Mike make on the author
A. He appeared friendly but careless.
B. He struck people as shy and quiet.
C. He seemed experienced but unreliable.
D. He looked frightening and unapproachable.
5. Why did Mike enter the water sideways
A. To offer comfort to the boys.
B. To avoid being swept away by the rip.
C. To hear the whistle from other lifeguards.
D. To demonstrate professional swimming skills.
6. What lesson did the author learn from the incident
A. Never judge people by their appearance. B. Always thank those who help you.
C. Fear is a natural reaction. D. Lifeguards are underpaid.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. A Mother’s Fear B. The Unthanked Hero
C. A Summer Lifeguard D. The Danger of the Sea

For three hot days in August 2023, at one of the biggest music festivals in the Netherlands, a line of people snaked outside the entrance of four shipping containers. They were queuing up to meet some mosquitoes.
The shipping containers were a pop-up laboratory, and the people were volunteering for a study that measured how attractive they were to the blood-sucking insects. Festival-goers rested their arms against acrylic boxes (亚克力盒子) that let caged mosquitoes smell but not bite. A camera helped track the insects’ landings, and then a computer calculated a score. Felix Hol, a quantitative biologist at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, directed the study.
There’s probably an interplay of different elements at work, like someone’s diet, scent, temperature and the microbial (微生物的) companions living on their skin, Hol says.
In the pop-up lab, Hol’s team tested mosquitoes’ responses to volunteers and collected a lot of other data, including information about their cleanliness, diet, and alcohol use, sleeping habits and sunscreen application. The team tested over 500 volunteers and observed a wide range of mosquito responses. After some people placed their arm against the cage, the insects zipped away to the sugar feeder on the opposite side. Other participants had mosquitoes targeting them within seconds.
Such extra-attractive humans may have been beer drinkers. People who recently drank beer were 44 percent more attractive to mosquitoes than people who didn’t. Among people who had showered recently, those who had applied sunscreen were about half as attractive as those who had not, the team found.
Overall, the team’s results suggest that if you don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes, “don’t drink beer and put on your sunscreen,” Hol says. If that advice doesn’t sound appealing, he says, there is an alternative: “You can do whatever you want and put on long sleeves.”
8. What is the primary function of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the research. B. To highlight the challenges.
C. To detail the scientific ways. D. To assess the volunteers’ motivations.
9. What does the underlined word “interplay” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean
A. Random combination. B. Unexpected result.
C. Single effect. D. Interaction.
10. What can be inferred about the role of the sugar feeder in Paragraph 4
A. Its effect has nothing to do with the volunteers’ gender.
B. It was the food source for mosquitoes in the experiment.
C. It helped compare how much humans attracted mosquitoes.
D. It tested mosquito preferences by creating a nature-like environment.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To report factors in human attractiveness to mosquitoes.
B. To prove sunscreen is an effective preventer.
C. To promote music festivals as research sites.
D. To explain why beer attracts mosquitoes.
D
The monster black hole at the center of our galaxy is spinning at near “top speed”, according to a new artificial intelligence(AI) model. The model, trained partially on complex telescope data that was previously considered too noisy to be useful, aims to create the most detailed black hole images ever.
For decades scientists have been trying to observe and characterize Sagittarius A *, the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy. In May 2022, they uncovered the first-ever image of this object, but there were still a number of questions, such as how it behaves.
An international team of scientists has now used AI technology to analyze data from the Event Horizon Telescope(EHT), hoping to discover new details about Sagittarius A*. However, this method is easily affected by water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere. This means it can be tough for researchers to make sense of the information the instrument collects.
Michael Janssen, an astrophysicist at Radboud University in the Netherlands, said, “A neural(神经) network is ideally suited to solve this problem.” Janssen and his team trained an AI model on EHT data that had been previously abandoned for being too noisy, Through this AI technique, they generated a new image of Sagittarius A *’s structure, and their picture revealed some new features. For example, the black hole appears to be spinning at “almost top speed”, and its rotational(旋转的) axis also seems to be pointing toward Earth.
However, not all experts are convinced that the AI model is accurate. “I’m very sympathetic and interested in what they’re doing,” Reinhard Genzel, one of the winners of the 2020 Nobel Prize in physics, said. “But artificial intelligence is not a miracle cure.” According to Genzel, the relatively low quality of the data going into the model could have produced unreliable results. As a result, the new image may not perfectly reflect the original, he said.
In the future, Janssen and his team plan to apply their technique to the latest EHT data and measure it against real-world results. They hope this will help to enhance the model and improve the future ones.
12. Which of the following is NOT included in Paragraph 2
A. The research target. B. The achievement.
C. Remaining gaps. D. Financial issues.
13. What did the AI model achieve
A. Formerly unknown features of Sagittarius A*.
B. Immediate recognition among scientists.
C. More accurate observational data.
D. The most detailed galaxy images.
14. What is the attitude of Genzel toward the AI technique
A. Deeply concerned. B. Completely opposed.
C. Cautiously optimistic. D. Reasonably confident.
15. What will Janssen likely do in the future
A. Supply additional training data to the AI model.
B. Cross-check AI results with newer EHT data.
C. Adjust the observation angle of the EHT.
D. Apply corrections to the EHT data.

The old saying “time is money”, by Benjamin Franklin, shows a deep truth about time’s importance.____16____Unlike money, once time is used, it can never be regained, making it humanity’s most priceless resource. Many people feel sorry for wasting time later in life, wishing they had prioritized goals or relationships.
Good time management turns this regret into opportunity. Individuals who ignore the significance of it may endanger their own future. You should start by finding core priorities — work deadlines, family time, or personal growth — and focus on tasks that match them.____17____
Things that take your attention away are modern time’s biggest enemies. Smartphones, social media, and unplanned interruptions take up useful hours.____18____For example, set specific “screen-free” periods or use apps that block distracting websites during work time. Small changes like these can greatly increase daily productivity.
____19____Working too much leads to tiredness, while too much free time wastes potential. The key is to alternate regularly: work in focused short periods, then take short breaks to get energy back. This way keeps up your energy and improves overall results.
In essence, time management is not about controlling time itself.____20____By using time properly, we can go after goals, care for relationships, and live more satisfying lives. Franklin’s words remind us that our hours, indeed, shape our lives.
A. Balance is also important in time management.
B. This helps avoid the “busy but unproductive” trap.
C. It often makes people lose focus on important tasks.
D. This means thinking of every moment as invaluable.
E. Instead, it’s about mastering how we use our own hours.
F. Forgetting rest to work more harms long-term productivity.
G. To fight them, you must set clear limits on these distractions.

In the hub of a city, sandwiched between skyscrapers and high-rises was a tiny but vibrant animal shelter by the name of “Paws Home”. Serving as a nice haven for numerous homeless animals, it offered food, shelter and care.
One day, young Jack and Grace walked by the shelter and noticed a sign for a voluntary service.
Jack was absorbed immediately, “Grace, just take into consideration those sad animals in urgent need of help. Let’s join to be volunteers.”
Grace, however, showed somewhat uncertainty, “I am not sure, Jack, voluntary service takes hard work, and we have school to go to and something else to do.”
Jack insisted, “just think about what a meaningful difference we would make to the homeless animals. Don’t hesitate! Do it now!” Eventually, Grace nodded.
Both Jack and Grace ran to the animal shelter and sprang into action. Sweeping the shelter, feeding the animals and having games with them were great fun for them. With days passing, they became attached to the lovely creatures and felt a sense of pride.
On one Sunday afternoon full of sunshine, when making nice meals for the lovely, Jack happened to hear a conversation, leaving him worried. The shelter’s director, Mr. Frank, was telling a worker a financial crisis Paws Home was faced with. As donations were declining and running costs were rising, the shelter was on the verge (边缘) of being closed. “The shelter will stop in the near future”, sighed Mr. Frank.
Jack told Grace the news promptly. Surely, both of them felt how urgent it was to find a way out. “We can’t wait doing nothing,” Grace said, resolve shining in her eyes, “we have to take action again.”
They immediately put forward a good plan: stage a community fundraising called “An Evening for Paws” — animals talent show, bake sale and auction (拍卖) on the square.
The weeks that followed saw how busy they were. Jack persuaded some local shops to donate pet supplies, baked goods, and art works for the auction. At the same time, Grace promoted the event online, attracting attention fast. She designed posters which would appear in the neighborhood.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then came the day when the community fundraising started.
