There are a number of approaches to mastering the art of deep work — be it focusing on a specific task, developing a daily ritual, or taking a “journalistic” approach to seizing moments of deep work when you can throughout the day.Whichever approach, the key is to determine your length of focus time and stick to it.
One approach to getting more done in less time is to rethink how you prioritise your day — in particular how we craft our to-do lists.Tim Harford, a famous writer, points to a study in the early 1980s that divided undergraduates into two groups: some were advised to set out monthly goals and study activities; others were told to plan activities and goals in much more detail, day by day.
While the researchers assumed that the daily plans would be most effective, they were wrong: the detailed daily plans discouraged students.Harford argues that distractions (干扰) often make the daily to-do list ineffective, while leaving room for flexibility in such a list can achieve the best results.
In order to make the most of our focus and energy, we also need to accept downtime, or as Newport suggests,“be lazy.” “Being free is as important to the brain as vitamin D is to the body,” he argues.
Srini Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, believes this link between downtime and productivity may be due to the way our brains operate. When our brains jump between being focused and unfocused on a task, they tend to be more efficient.
This is something used by some of the world’s highest achievers.Warren Buffett is known for having days in his calendar where nothing is scheduled because he finds sitting and thinking has a much higher priority than filling every minute of his day.It is an approach that Bill Gates has borrowed from the billionaire investor.
The key to being productive might be found by accepting the slumps in our day — those moments when your productivity begins to lose gradually, usually in the midmorning, directly after lunch or midafternoon.
4.What’s the most important to deep work?( )
A.Being efficient. B.Staying focused.
C.Prioritising your day. D.Making a scientific plan.

D.We should work harder than them.
7.What does the underlined word “slumps” in the last paragraph mean?( )

I shall never forget Marion J.Douglas, who was a student in one of my adult-education classes. Here is his real story.
The first time he had lost his five-year-old daughter, a child he adored, he and his wife thought they couldn’t bear that first loss, but, as he said:“Ten months later, we had another little girl — and she died in five days.”
This double misfortunes was almost too much to bear.“I couldn’t take it,” this father told us.“I couldn’t sleep;I couldn’t eat;I couldn’t rest or relax. My nerves were completely shaken and my confidence gone.” At last he went to doctors; one recommended sleeping pills and another recommended a trip.He tried both, but neither remedy helped. He felt his world fell apart. The tension of grief — if you have ever been attacked by sorrow, you know what he meant.
“But luckily, I had one child left — a four-year-old son.He gave me the solution to my problem. One afternoon as I sat around feeling sorry for myself, he asked:‘Daddy, will you build a boat for me?’ I was in no mood to build a boat; in fact, I was in no mood to do anything. But my son is a persistent little fellow! I had to give in.” Building that toy boat took about three hours.By the time it was finished, I realised that those three hours spent building that boat were the first hours of mental relaxation and peace that I had had in months!
“That discovery drove me out of despair and caused me to do a bit of thinking — the first real thinking I had done in months.I realised that it is difficult to worry while you are busy doing something that requires planning and thinking.”
No time for worry! That is exactly what Winston Churchill said when he was working eighteen hours a day. When he was asked if he worried about his great responsibilities, he said:“I’m too busy.I have no time for worry.”

Staying in on a Friday night feels like a good idea — you could really use the “alone time” after a busy week — until you get on Facebook. You see your friends having a party at that cool bar you’ve been wanting to try, then you start watching another friend’s story before they set out on an exciting road trip.
Suddenly, that alone time you chose doesn’t feel so good anymore. You feel like it’s boring to stay at home — you may even question the purpose of your very existence.Don’t worry, that anxiety is common — and not that new. You’re experiencing FOMO, or the fear of missing out.
When we are constantly comparing ourselves to people around us, it can lead to some pretty tough feelings.“FOMO is about having thoughts on missing out on opportunities which might increase our happiness,” says psychologist Aarti Gupta in California. There’s a biological explanation for why we experience FOMO.“Humans are social beings and rely on each other to survive, and being left out or not being in the know could have, once upon a time, been a matter of life or death.”
If you find yourself comparing yourself to others in a way that doesn’t feel productive, Gupta recommends practicing an abundance (富足) mindset:“This means remembering that there are plenty of opportunities to go around for everyone, and just because someone else found success doesn’t mean that you won’t.”
“I think the irony of all of it is that it’s called FOMO, the fear of missing out.But really, what it is doing is that it’s making you miss out on today and that comfortable bed that you’re in right now, or the job that you’re in right now or the relationship that you’re in right now because you’re so worried about what else is out there,” says Gupta. You can battle FOMO simply by being more fully present in and invested in the life you have today.
12.What makes your alone time become unpleasant?( )
A.Having nothing to do. B.Staying at home by yourself.
C.Seeing your friends’ activities. D.Hearing your friends’ bad news.

C.More comparison. D.Fewer opportunities.

There are a number of approaches to mastering the art of deep
work — be it focusing on a specific task, developing a daily ritual, or
taking a “journalistic” approach to seizing moments of deep work when
you can throughout the day.Whichever approach, the key is to
determine your length of focus time and stick to it.
One approach to getting more done in less time is to rethink how you
prioritise your day — in particular how we craft our to-do lists.Tim
Harford, a famous writer, points to a study in the early 1980s that
divided undergraduates into two groups: some were advised to set out
monthly goals and study activities; others were told to plan activities and
goals in much more detail, day by day.
While the researchers assumed that the daily plans would be most
effective, they were wrong: the detailed daily plans discouraged
students.Harford argues that distractions (干扰) often make the daily
to-do list ineffective, while leaving room for flexibility in such a list can
achieve the best results.
In order to make the most of our focus and energy, we also need to
accept downtime, or as Newport suggests,“be lazy.” “Being free is
as important to the brain as vitamin D is to the body,” he argues.
Srini Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School,
believes this link between downtime and productivity may be due to the
way our brains operate. When our brains jump between being focused and
unfocused on a task, they tend to be more efficient.
This is something used by some of the world’s highest
achievers.Warren Buffett is known for having days in his calendar where
nothing is scheduled because he finds sitting and thinking has a much
higher priority than filling every minute of his day.It is an approach that
Bill Gates has borrowed from the billionaire investor.
The key to being productive might be found by accepting the slumps
in our day — those moments when your productivity begins to lose
gradually, usually in the midmorning, directly after lunch or
midafternoon.

I shall never forget Marion J. Douglas, who was a student in one of
my adult-education classes. Here is his real story.
The first time he had lost his five-year-old daughter, a child he
adored, he and his wife thought they couldn’t bear that first loss,
but, as he said:“Ten months later, we had another little girl — and
she died in five days.”
This double misfortunes was almost too much to bear.“I couldn’t
take it,” this father told us.“I couldn’t sleep;I couldn’t eat;I
couldn’t rest or relax. My nerves were completely shaken and my
confidence gone.” At last he went to doctors; one recommended
sleeping pills and another recommended a trip.He tried both, but neither
remedy helped. He felt his world fell apart. The tension of grief — if you
have ever been attacked by sorrow, you know what he meant.
  “But luckily, I had one child left — a four-year-old son.He gave
me the solution to my problem. One afternoon as I sat around feeling sorry
for myself, he asked:‘Daddy, will you build a boat for me?’ I
was in no mood to build a boat; in fact, I was in no mood to do
anything. But my son is a persistent little fellow! I had to give in.”
Building that toy boat took about three hours.By the time it was
finished, I realised that those three hours spent building that boat were
the first hours of mental relaxation and peace that I had had in months!
“That discovery drove me out of despair and caused me to do a bit
of thinking — the first real thinking I had done in months.I realised that it
is difficult to worry while you are busy doing something that requires
planning and thinking.”
No time for worry! That is exactly what Winston Churchill said
when he was working eighteen hours a day. When he was asked if he
worried about his great responsibilities, he said:“I’m too busy.I
have no time for worry.”

Staying in on a Friday night feels like a good idea — you could really
use the “alone time” after a busy week — until you get on Facebook. You see your friends having a party at that cool bar you’ve been wanting to try, then you start watching another friend’s story before they set out on an exciting road trip.
Suddenly, that alone time you chose doesn’t feel so good
anymore. You feel like it’s boring to stay at home — you may even
question the purpose of your very existence.Don’t worry, that anxiety
is common — and not that new. You’re experiencing FOMO, or the
fear of missing out.
When we are constantly comparing ourselves to people around us,
it can lead to some pretty tough feelings.“FOMO is about having
thoughts on missing out on opportunities which might increase our
happiness,” says psychologist Aarti Gupta in California. There’s a
biological explanation for why we experience FOMO. “Humans are
social beings and rely on each other to survive, and being left out or not
being in the know could have, once upon a time, been a matter of life
or death.”
If you find yourself comparing yourself to others in a way that
doesn’t feel productive, Gupta recommends practicing an abundance
(富足) mindset:“This means remembering that there are plenty of
opportunities to go around for everyone, and just because someone else
found success doesn’t mean that you won’t.”
“I think the irony of all of it is that it’s called FOMO, the fear of
missing out.But really, what it is doing is that it’s making you miss out
on today and that comfortable bed that you’re in right now, or the job
that you’re in right now or the relationship that you’re in right now
because you’re so worried about what else is out there,” says
Gupta. You can battle FOMO simply by being more fully present in and
invested in the life you have today.
