The little things we believe or tell ourselves can go a long way towards affecting our success. Here’s what Greg McKeown, author and Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum, had to say. Why do capable people fail to break through to the next level? It’s a question McKeown began pursuing an answer to when he quit law school 15 years ago.“The answer to the question, to my great surprise, is success,” he wrote in his post 12 Myths That Lead to a Busy, Unfulfilling Life. “I found that success can be a catalyst (催化剂) for failure,” McKeown wrote. What often happens, he said, is that successful people get disturbed by small things. He pointed to 12 big myths that can lead to a stressful, unsatisfying career and life.Among them: “If everyone is doing it, then I need to do it. Let the fear of missing out consume you.Buy into the cultural belief that glorifies being busy and checking social media and email constantly.Don’t pay attention to the quiet voice telling you a different life is possible.Just go with the crowd. The truth:There is a joy in missing out.Discover it. “I’ll stay up late and get it done.If you ever mention sleep to someone remember to talk about how little you’ve had lately.Boast about getting five hours last night, or about how you pulled an all-nighter earlier this week. It’s okay to be tired and to admit it.But don’t show weakness — or worse, laziness — by suggesting you need a full eight hours. The truth: Sleep is for high performers.” The lesson is simple.“When organising your life, there are only two choices: The disciplined pursuit of the essential or the undisciplined pursuit of the nonessential,” McKeown wrote.“And that matters because if you don’t control your life, someone else will.”24.What was Greg McKeown focusing on when he quit law school?( )A.Why many people give up their dreams.B.Why capable people can’t achieve success.C.What is the secret of many people’s success.D.What keeps capable people from winning greater success.25.Why can success be a catalyst for failure according to Greg McKeown?( )A.Successful people will become proud.B.Success may offer people more challenges.C.Successful people won’t work hard any more.D.Success can prevent people from concentrating.26.What does Greg McKeown advise us to do?( )A.Go with the crowd. B.Check email regularly.C.Follow your own course. D.Check social media often.27.In Paragraph 7, Greg McKeown stressed the importance of .( )A.working hard B.managing timeC.getting enough sleep D.combining work and playC Most parents tell lies to their children as a way to change their behaviour, suggests a study of families in the United States and China. The most frequent example was parents threatening to leave children alone in public unless they behaved.Persuasion ranged from asking the support of the tooth fairy to telling children they would go blind unless they ate particular vegetables. Another example was:“That was beautiful piano playing.” The study, published in the International Journal of Psychology, examined the use of “instrumental lying” — and found that such lies were used by a great number of parents in both the United States and China. The most commonly used lie — popular with both US and Chinese families — was parents pretending to a child that they were going to walk away and leave the child alone.“The popularity of this lie may relate to the challenge parents face in trying to leave a place against their child’s wishes,” say the researchers. Another lie that was common in both countries was the false promise to buy a requested toy at some time in the future. Researchers established different kinds of these untruths. There were “untrue statements related to misbehaviour”, which included:“If you don’t behave, I will call the police,” and “If you don’t quiet down and start behaving, the lady over there will be angry with you.” There are some more surprising lies recorded. For example, “untrue statements related to leaving or staying” a parent was recorded as saying:“If you don’t follow me, a kidnapper (绑架者) will come to kidnap you.” The researchers, headed by Gail D.Heymana, Anna S.Hsua, Genyue Fub and Kang Leeac, concluded that this raises “important moral questions for parents about when, if ever, parental lying is reasonable”.28.Which of the following is the most common lie used by parents?( )A.I’ll buy you a toy. B.I’ll go home first.C.The police will come. D.The bad guy will come.29.What’s the parents’ purpose of using “instrumental lying”?( )A.To criticize their children. B.To comfort their children.C.To persuade their children. D.To encourage their children.30.The “kidnapper” lie is usually used by parents when a child .( )A.asks for a present B.does something wrongC.refuses to leave a place D.refuses to eat a vegetable31.What is the researchers’ attitude towards parents’ lying?( )A.Doubtful. B.Surprised.C.Favourable. D.Ambiguous.D If you ask most people whether they like having more choices, the answer will be yes.But when it comes to sales, a large selection can actually hurt your clients’ revenues. Although people like choice, they become overwhelmed (不知所措) by it.Hick’s Law perfectly demonstrates this.It states that there is a measurable increase in how long it takes somebody to make a decision as the number of options that are available goes up. That delay in decision making can prove damaging on an online shopping site because it tends to result in users giving up.They are paralyzed by the decision, and so, they decide to go away and think about it.That will significantly reduce the number of people who eventually make a purchase. I know it can be hard to convince clients to limit the variety of products or complex options they offer on their sites, but there is some strong evidence to support your cause. Researchers in California ran an experiment in a local grocery store. They set up a stall in the store selling jam. Some days the stall would sell six flavors of jams, while on other days it offered 24 varieties. The results were significant. On days where they sold 24 varieties, they saw a mere four percent conversion (转化) rate. However, when they offered only six choices, that figure rose to a surprising 31 percent.Limiting choice works. That experiment perfectly demonstrates both the problem and the solution.Despite the evidence, you will not always be able to persuade clients to reduce choice. The next best option is to hide some of those choices. Unlike a stall in a grocery store, we have more flexibility online regarding how products are displayed. We can highlight some options and hide others. For example, you could display the best-selling categories of products, while hiding other groupings under something like a “more” option. If you are unable to remove options, you can at least focus users on the most popular choices.32.What does Hick’s Law mainly tell us about more choices?( )A.They increase product sales. B.They lead to better decisions.C.They can better satisfy customers. D.They make decision-making harder.33.What does the underlined word “paralyzed” in Paragraph 3 mean?( )A.Attracted. B.Prevented.C.Controlled. D.Encouraged.34.What can we learn from the experiment in California?( )A.More varieties attract more customers.B.Fewer varieties attract more customers.C.More varieties create higher conversion rate.D.Fewer varieties create higher conversion rate.35.What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph?( )A.Improve product quality. B.Increase product varieties.C.Avoid displaying all products. D.Hide the best-selling products. Living a life of simplicity can be a beautiful thing. But simplifying itself can seem like a difficult process. So I recommend simplicity in your simplifying. One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank.Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day.A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day.Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.” Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class.“How about singing together in the talent show?”she grinned,“I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home.I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears.Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent.Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune. “You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head.“Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike. Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform. I was completely surprised at the news. Like you, I also had a noise problem with a neighbour. He’d watch loud movies every night, sometimes until 3 in the morning. One night, I decided I’d had enough of the noise, so I went to my neighbour’s apartment and we argued. However, that only made him turn his TV up even louder every night after that. A week or so later, I saw my neighbour outside.Even though we’d lived next to each other for a long time, the first time we’d spoken was when we had our argument. So, I chatted with him and got to know him better — I also made a joke about how I liked his taste in movies. That night, the noise problem stopped. It seemed that all I had to do was get my neighbour to see me as a friend, not an enemy. So, my advice to you is to be calm and patient with your neighbour. One day, go over and ask if you can come in for a talk.If you mention that their noise is affecting your studies, they should soon change their mind. At the same time, however, not everyone is comfortable with facing people this way.If you’re one of those people, write a polite and friendly letter instead, explaining your problem to your neighbour. Many people we know can make us angry, but usually, the best way to win someone over is through kindness. 43.C 根据第三段中的learn Zejd’s language so I can talk to him and other deaf people可知,Zejd有听力障碍。44.D 根据下文on the first day of school可知,Zejd很快就被学校接受了。 They got a sign language teacher, and three months later, Zejd was happily able to communicate with ... 49.A 根据下文like homework and games可知,家庭作业和游戏是很常规的事情。 The other kids in the class are quite happy as well. 56.tallest the second tallest building in Paris表示“巴黎第二高建筑”。 61.It It takes sb some time to do sth It’s Time to Protect Sea Animals As is known to all, our seas have been polluted because of human activities, such as overfishing and dumping garbage. In fact, the problem is so serious that many sea animals are on the verge of extinction. It is reported that over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year. Then what should we do to protect sea animals? For one thing, we should reduce plastic pollution by carrying out 3R Rule, namely Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, because plastic is the most common rubbish that is found in the sea.For another, illegal fishing must be completely forbidden. One of the main consequences of industrial fishing is that some species have been overfished to the point of near extinction. I was completely surprised at the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up.Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who lookedat me with care and concern.“You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” she said after my stumbled explanation.I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart.Yes, I could do it myself. Finally came the big moment.Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind.Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day.I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care.It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.9 / 9(共91张PPT)单元质量检测(二)CONFLICT AND COMPROMISE(满分150分,时间120分钟)第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)听下面5段对话。 1. Like you, I also had a noise problem with a neighbour. He’dwatch loud movies every night, sometimes until 3 in the morning.Onenight, I decided I’d had enough of the noise, so I went to myneighbour’s apartment and we argued. However, that only made himturn his TV up even louder every night after that. A week or so later, I saw my neighbour outside.Even thoughwe’d lived next to each other for a long time, the first time we’dspoken was when we had our argument. So, I chatted with him and got to know him better — I also made ajoke about how I liked his taste in movies. That night, the noise problem stopped. It seemed that all I had to dowas get my neighbour to see me as a friend, not an enemy. So, my advice to you is to be calm and patient with yourneighbour. The little things we believe or tell ourselves can go a long waytowards affecting our success. Here’s what Greg McKeown, author andYoung Global Leader at World Economic Forum, had to say. Why do capable people fail to break through to the next level? It’sa question McKeown began pursuing an answer to when he quit lawschool 15 years ago.“The answer to the question, to my greatsurprise, is success,” he wrote in his post 12 Myths That Lead to aBusy, Unfulfilling Life. “I found that success can be a catalyst (催化剂) for failure,”McKeown wrote. What often happens, he said, is that successfulpeople get disturbed by small things. He pointed to 12 big myths that can lead to a stressful, unsatisfyingcareer and life.Among them: “If everyone is doing it, then I need to do it. Let the fear ofmissing out consume you.Buy into the cultural belief that glorifies beingbusy and checking social media and email constantly.Don’t payattention to the quiet voice telling you a different life is possible.Just gowith the crowd. The truth:There is a joy in missing out.Discover it. “I’ll stay up late and get it done.If you ever mention sleep tosomeone remember to talk about how little you’ve had lately.Boastabout getting five hours last night, or about how you pulled an all-nighter earlier this week. It’s okay to be tired and to admit it.But don’tshow weakness — or worse, laziness — by suggesting you need a fulleight hours. The truth: Sleep is for high performers.” The lesson is simple.“When organising your life, there are onlytwo choices: The disciplined pursuit of the essential or the undisciplinedpursuit of the nonessential,” McKeown wrote.“And that mattersbecause if you don’t control your life, someone else will.” 24. The most frequent example was parents threatening to leave childrenalone in public unless they behaved.Persuasion ranged from asking thesupport of the tooth fairy to telling children they would go blind unlessthey ate particular vegetables. Another example was:“That was beautiful piano playing.” Thestudy, published in the International Journal of Psychology, examinedthe use of “instrumental lying” — and found that such lies were used bya great number of parents in both the United States and China. The most commonly used lie — popular with both US and Chinesefamilies — was parents pretending to a child that they were going to walkaway and leave the child alone.“The popularity of this lie may relate tothe challenge parents face in trying to leave a place against their child’swishes,” say the researchers. Another lie that was common in both countries was the false promiseto buy a requested toy at some time in the future. Researchers established different kinds of these untruths. There were“untrue statements related to misbehaviour”, which included:“Ifyou don’t behave, I will call the police,” and “If you don’t quietdown and start behaving, the lady over there will be angry with you.” There are some more surprising lies recorded. For example,“untrue statements related to leaving or staying” a parent was recordedas saying:“If you don’t follow me, a kidnapper (绑架者) willcome to kidnap you.” The researchers, headed by Gail D. Heymana, Anna S. Hsua,Genyue Fub and Kang Leeac, concluded that this raises “importantmoral questions for parents about when, if ever, parental lying isreasonable”. 28. Although people like choice, they become overwhelmed (不知所措) by it.Hick’s Law perfectly demonstrates this.It states that there isa measurable increase in how long it takes somebody to make a decision asthe number of options that are available goes up. That delay in decision making can prove damaging on an onlineshopping site because it tends to result in users giving up.They areparalyzed by the decision, and so, they decide to go away and thinkabout it.That will significantly reduce the number of people whoeventually make a purchase. I know it can be hard to convince clients to limit the variety ofproducts or complex options they offer on their sites, but there is somestrong evidence to support your cause. Researchers in California ran an experiment in a local grocerystore. They set up a stall in the store selling jam. Some days the stall wouldsell six flavors of jams, while on other days it offered 24 varieties.Theresults were significant. On days where they sold 24 varieties, they saw amere four percent conversion (转化) rate. However, when theyoffered only six choices, that figure rose to a surprising 31percent.Limiting choice works. That experiment perfectly demonstrates both the problem and thesolution.Despite the evidence, you will not always be able to persuadeclients to reduce choice. The next best option is to hide some of thosechoices. Unlike a stall in a grocery store, we have more flexibility onlineregarding how products are displayed. We can highlight some options andhide others. For example, you could display the best-selling categories ofproducts, while hiding other groupings under something like a “more”option. If you are unable to remove options, you can at least focus userson the most popular choices. 32. It It takes sb some time to do sth It’s Time to Protect SeaAnimals为题写一篇短文参赛,内容包括: 1. It’s Time to Protect Sea Animals It’s Time to Protect Sea Animals As is known to all, our seas have been polluted because of humanactivities, such as overfishing and dumping garbage. In fact, theproblem is so serious that many sea animals are on the verge ofextinction. It is reported that over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year. One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talentshow for the local food bank.Students were encouraged to showcase theirunique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day.Abuzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the bigday.Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire toparticipate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t haveany special skills to share.” Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.Icouldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of themost popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in thegrocery store after class.“How about singing together in the talentshow?”she grinned,“I heard you singing a tune, along the wayback home.I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’tbelieve my ears.Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent.Since Emma had the world’s prettiestvoice, I felt like being favoured by fortune. “You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum benttowards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.” Then a light bulbseemed to go in her head.“Why not practise right now upstairs? I betyou’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know wewere thinking alike. Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day afterschool. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene.Asthe days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the daybefore the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachacheand was not in any shape to perform. I was completely surprised at the news.
