Way back in the early 1940s — long before smart phones, Siri and semi-autonomous weapons — the late great sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov drew up a set of principles for the development of advanced robotic systems.
Asimov was essentially an optimist, and his famous Three Laws of Robotics have influence in science and technology circles to this day.
  (1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.(2) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.(3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Now, almost 80 years later, legal academic and artificial intelligence expert Frank Pasquale has added four additional principles.Professor Pasquale says while Asimov’s ideas were well founded, they assumed a certain technological trajectory (轨迹) that no longer holds — innovations are not always for the good of humanity.
“Whereas Asimov is talking about how we have robots help people and not harm them, I’m talking about how we guide the direction of technology,” he says. And he draws an important distinction between AI and what he terms IA — intelligence augmentation (增强).
“The artificial intelligence goal is often to replace human beings, to create, for example, a robot doctor or a robot teacher. The intelligence augmentation goal is to help human beings.”
“If we go for an artificial intelligence vision of replacement, that’s going to create a jobless future in many areas,” he says.“Whereas if we emphasise intelligence augmentation, that should actually increase both productivity and the value of labour.”
“We’ve seen so many fields where technological advances have led to very troubling and harmful consequences like global warming. We’ve got to get ahead of these things,” he says.“We can’t just look at something like global warming and say, well, we’ll just get a technological fix out of it.We have to think very deeply about directing innovation.”
4.What can we learn about Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics?( )
A.They ignore robots’ interests. B.They focus on humans’ interests.
C.They predict the development of AI. D.They have a history of nearly 70 years.
5.Which of the following beliefs did Isaac Asimov agree with?( )
A.IA is more important than AI. B.Innovations do good to people.
C.Robots will replace human beings. D.Technology can be harmful to people.
6.What is the core of intelligence augmentation?( )
A.The development of robots. B.Humans’ depending on robots.
C.The improvement of humans. D.Robots’ replacing human beings.
7.What attitude does Frank Pasquale take to technological advances?( )
A.Negative and worried. B.Doubtful and confused.
C.Optimistic and confident. D.Reasonable and cautious.

In the closing years of the Sui Dynasty, a major flood occurred on the Xiao River outside the city of Zhaozhou, which caused the collapse of a large stone bridge which had already been rebuilt many times.
At this time Li Chun, the most famous local engineer, was extremely puzzled and annoyed: The great stone bridge had been rebuilt many times, but still it could not withstand the force of the flood! But it had to be rebuilt once more.
Li Chun carefully examined the original blueprint of the bridge. The old bridge had been built on stone supports, which had weakened as time went by, until the bridge collapsed. If there were no supports, the flood waters would flow past the bridge unimpeded (畅通的), and the bridge would not collapse. But in that case the arch of the bridge would have to be very high, and it would be very inconvenient for the people to climb up and down steep slopes.Li Chun shook his head, and decided against this method.
The news that Li Chun had come across a difficulty spread throughout the city. The local people began to grumble:“It seems that a bridge cannot be built here.Only Lu Ban could build this bridge.” These grumbles came to the ears of Li Chun, causing him much upset. So he labored day and night to work out a solution.
Suddenly, he had a flash of inspiration! “Why did the arch have to be so high? Instead of semicircular, the arch could be bow-shaped.And there would only need to be one big arch, supported at each end by two small ones. That way, there would be no need for stone supports. In times of flooding the flood waters would flow through the four small arches, lessening the impact on the bridge.Wouldn’t such a bridge be safer?”
The bridge was finally built. It was not only safe and convenient, but it also had a special elegance. Now, this new stone bridge has become the representative of China’s arched bridges.
8.Why did Li Chun feel puzzled and annoyed?( )
A.There was no money to build a new bridge.
B.The local officials refused to build a new bridge.
C.No bridge had been built on the Xiao River.
D.The bridge was damaged repeatedly on the Xiao River.
9.What’s the problem with Li Chun’s first plan?( )
A.It was not practical enough. B.It would cost a lot of money.
C.The bridge would be too high. D.The bridge would not be strong.
10.What made Li Chun feel upset according to Paragraph 4?( )
A.Failing to get financial support. B.Some bridges’ being destroyed.
C.People’s lacking confidence in him. D.Not being able to reach his goal.
11.What can we learn about Zhaozhou Bridge?( )
A.It had two big arches. B.Its arch was semicircular.
C.It had two stone supports. D.It was over 1,400 years old.

Drones are increasingly flying in our skies, capturing images, managing crops and soon, delivering packages. But what do the birds make of this invasion of their territory?
With strict animal ethics approval, we flew drones towards flocks of birds in Queensland’s Moreton Bay.We found many species were not disturbed, provided the drone was small and flew above 60m.
The exception was the critically endangered eastern curlews (杓鹬), which became alarmed and flew away — even when a tiny drone approached at the maximum legal altitude of 120m.But when eastern curlews took flight, other nearby species were often startled, creating a domino effect that eventually caused the whole flock to take flight.
Drone disturbance can interrupt birds as they rest or feed.It can even cause them to avoid some locations altogether. If the birds are consistently interrupted or scared away from their preferred habitats, they may find it difficult to eat and rest enough to survive and reproduce. This is particularly concerning for species such as eastern curlews, which migrate thousands of kilometres to breed.
We studied a diverse group of birds typically found along coastlines, known as shorebirds.Heartbreakingly, their global population has plummeted as they continue to battle habitat destruction, sea level rise, disturbance and hunting.
The last few decades have been bleak for the eastern curlew, which is the world’s largest migratory shorebird.Research in 2011 indicated a population decline of 80% over three generations.
While drones are unlikely to have played a major role in shorebird decline so far, our results, combined with the increasing presence of drones along our coastline, indicate they could become yet another source of disturbance for these birds, many of which are already endangered.
Drones can be beneficial in many ways, but we must identify when and how drones can be used to minimise potential harm.In some locations, such as some Australian national parks, drone use is already prohibited or restricted. But managers need to understand how drones affect wildlife to inform these regulations.
12.What’s the problem with eastern curlews?( )
A.They are being killed. B.They are being disturbed.
C.Their safety is being threatened. D.Their habitats are being damaged.
13.What do we learn about eastern curlews?( )
A.They are able to fly above 120 meters. B.They can’t find a place to eat and rest.
C.They adapt to the environment quickly.D.They are sensitive to their surroundings.
14.What does the underlined word “plummeted” in Paragraph 5 mean?( )
A.Reduced sharply. B.Increased rapidly.
C.Recovered slowly. D.Changed gradually.
15.What’s the author’s final conclusion about drones?( )
A.They pose no threat to eastern curlews.
B.They should be forbidden near the shores.
C.They should be used under certain regulations.
D.They benefit eastern curlews in a number of ways.

Way back in the early 1940s — long before smart phones, Siri and
semi-autonomous weapons — the late great sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov
drew up a set of principles for the development of advanced robotic
systems.
Asimov was essentially an optimist, and his famous Three Laws of
Robotics have influence in science and technology circles to this day.
  (1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction,
allow a human being to come to harm.(2) A robot must obey the orders
given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the
First Law.(3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such
protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Now, almost 80 years later, legal academic and artificial
intelligence expert Frank Pasquale has added four additional
principles.Professor Pasquale says while Asimov’s ideas were well
founded, they assumed a certain technological trajectory (轨迹) that
no longer holds — innovations are not always for the good of humanity.
“Whereas Asimov is talking about how we have robots help people
and not harm them, I’m talking about how we guide the direction of
technology,” he says. And he draws an important distinction between
AI and what he terms IA — intelligence augmentation (增强).
“The artificial intelligence goal is often to replace human beings,
to create, for example, a robot doctor or a robot teacher. The
intelligence augmentation goal is to help human beings.”
“If we go for an artificial intelligence vision of replacement,
that’s going to create a jobless future in many areas,” he
says.“Whereas if we emphasise intelligence augmentation, that should
actually increase both productivity and the value of labour.”
“We’ve seen so many fields where technological advances have
led to very troubling and harmful consequences like global warming.
We’ve got to get ahead of these things,” he says.“We can’t just look at something like global warming and say, well, we’ll just get a technological fix out of it.We have to think very deeply about directing innovation.”

4. What can we learn about Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics?
( )
A. They ignore robots’ interests.
B. They focus on humans’ interests.
C. They predict the development of AI.
D. They have a history of nearly 70 years.
5. Which of the following beliefs did Isaac Asimov agree with?
( )
A. IA is more important than AI.
B. Innovations do good to people.
C. Robots will replace human beings.
D. Technology can be harmful to people.
Frank
6. What is the core of intelligence augmentation?( )
A. The development of robots.
B. Humans’ depending on robots.
C. The improvement of humans.
D. Robots’ replacing human beings.
7. What attitude does Frank Pasquale take to technological advances?
( )
A. Negative and worried.
B. Doubtful and confused.
C. Optimistic and confident.
D. Reasonable and cautious.

In the closing years of the Sui Dynasty, a major flood occurred on
the Xiao River outside the city of Zhaozhou, which caused the collapse
of a large stone bridge which had already been rebuilt many times.
At this time Li Chun, the most famous local engineer, was
extremely puzzled and annoyed: The great stone bridge had been rebuilt
many times, but still it could not withstand the force of the flood! But it
had to be rebuilt once more.
Li Chun carefully examined the original blueprint of the bridge. The
old bridge had been built on stone supports, which had weakened as time
went by, until the bridge collapsed. If there were no supports, the flood
waters would flow past the bridge unimpeded (畅通的), and the
bridge would not collapse. But in that case the arch of the bridge would
have to be very high, and it would be very inconvenient for the people to
climb up and down steep slopes.Li Chun shook his head, and decided
against this method.
The news that Li Chun had come across a difficulty spread
throughout the city. The local people began to grumble:“It seems that a
bridge cannot be built here.Only Lu Ban could build this bridge.” These
grumbles came to the ears of Li Chun, causing him much upset. So he
labored day and night to work out a solution.
Suddenly, he had a flash of inspiration! “Why did the arch have
to be so high? Instead of semicircular, the arch could be bow-
shaped. And there would only need to be one big arch, supported at each
end by two small ones. That way, there would be no need for stone
supports. In times of flooding the flood waters would flow through the
four small arches, lessening the impact on the bridge.Wouldn’t such a
bridge be safer?”
The bridge was finally built. It was not only safe and convenient,
but it also had a special elegance. Now, this new stone bridge has
become the representative of China’s arched bridges.

Drones are increasingly flying in our skies, capturing images,
managing crops and soon, delivering packages. But what do the birds
make of this invasion of their territory?
With strict animal ethics approval, we flew drones towards flocks of
birds in Queensland’s Moreton Bay.We found many species were not
disturbed, provided the drone was small and flew above 60m.
The exception was the critically endangered eastern curlews (杓
鹬), which became alarmed and flew away — even when a tiny drone
approached at the maximum legal altitude of 120m.But when eastern
curlews took flight, other nearby species were often startled, creating a
domino effect that eventually caused the whole flock to take flight.
Drone disturbance can interrupt birds as they rest or feed.It can even
cause them to avoid some locations altogether. If the birds are consistently
interrupted or scared away from their preferred habitats, they may find it
difficult to eat and rest enough to survive and reproduce. This is
particularly concerning for species such as eastern curlews, which
migrate thousands of kilometres to breed.
We studied a diverse group of birds typically found along
coastlines, known as shorebirds.Heartbreakingly, their global
population has plummeted as they continue to battle habitat destruction,
sea level rise, disturbance and hunting.
The last few decades have been bleak for the eastern curlew, which
is the world’s largest migratory shorebird.Research in 2011 indicated a
population decline of 80% over three generations.
While drones are unlikely to have played a major role in shorebird
decline so far, our results, combined with the increasing presence of
drones along our coastline, indicate they could become yet another source of disturbance for these birds, many of which are already endangered.
Drones can be beneficial in many ways, but we must identify when
and how drones can be used to minimise potential harm.In some
locations, such as some Australian national parks, drone use is already
prohibited or restricted. But managers need to understand how drones
affect wildlife to inform these regulations.
