Traveling solo isn’t just about going somewhere new. It’s about embracing personal freedom, and tuning into the world around you without distractions. These 4 U.S. destinations strike the perfect balance between safe, enriching and solo-friendly.
●Savannah — for timeless beauty and easy wandering
Savannah is a romantic and relaxed escape, perfect for solo travelers who enjoy walking at a slower pace. The city’s historic district is incredibly walkable and filled with charming buildings. Take a guided tour or riverboat cruise, spend a few quiet hours in Forsyth Park, or have a brunch at a sunny sidewalk cafe. Sun, water, and stillness. Sometimes, that’s all you really need.
●Asheville — for artsy vibes and Blue Ridge escapes
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a “solo travel dream” thanks to its mixture of natural beauty and indie culture. Wake up with locally roasted coffee in the River Arts District, then spend your day hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway. Come evening, and tuck into a farm-to-table meal downtown.
●Boulder — for active soloists and nature lovers
If being alone means being outdoors, Boulder is your heaven. It offers world-class hiking, biking and trail running, just steps from its vibrant downtown. The town is known for its health-conscious, eco-friendly mindset, making it easy to find fresh food, yoga studios and wellness-focused events.
●Charleston — for historic charm and southern Grace
Solo doesn’t have to be rustic (淳朴的). If your idea of a solo trip includes candlelit dinners, architectural eye candy and walking along cobblestone streets, Charleston offers a refined yet relaxed getaway. A small cabinet filled with teacups I’ve collected over the years just sits around the corner. There are none I would consider priceless, except for one. It’s a light gray cup made of bone china. On the outside was a design of an Asian-themed dragon. Inside, a woman’s lovely face peered up from the bottom.
My grandfather whom we called Papaw, gave me the teacup when I was 9. “I thought of you when I saw this,”he said, “so I bought it for you.” The teacup was beautiful and unique, the very opposite of how I saw myself: just plain and shy. Yet my grandfather saw something in this teacup that reminded him of me.
My confidence grew as I entered my teens, and so did my fascination with teacups. Papaw passed away when I was 18, and I was so grateful to have the cup to remember him by.
Papaw didn’t tell me where he got it. I guessed it was probably from one of his visits to flea markets. I’ve visited countless antique stores searching for a similar-style teacup, but in vain. One afternoon 10 years ago, I accidentally crashed the teacup while cleaning!
My treasure was gone. If I had broken any other cup, I would have dumped the pieces in the trash without hesitation, but not this one, my only reminder of Papaw. Even though I didn’t know what to do with the broken pieces, I gathered them up and put them in a small box.
A few years later, my husband made a wooden cabinet to showcase all the teacups I had collected. I arranged them on the shelves but found my collection incomplete without the teacup that meant the most to me. I found the box with the shattered remains of my treasure and painstakingly glued each piece until it was set. I displayed it in the center of the top shelf. Only up close can one see the imperfections, and for me, they only add to its beauty.
They remind me that while life’s challenges have left their mark, we can emerge from them as we meant to be, someone resilient and confident, rare and precious. Someone with unique qualities and talents to offer.
24. What makes the teacup a treasure to the writer
A. It was a rare antique. B. It was bought at a flea market.
C. It was from her grandfather. D. It was designed to be one of a kind.
25. What did the writer keep the broken pieces for
A. She plans to sell them later. B. She expects to turn them into art.
C. She hopes to repair them someday. D. She wants to maintain the link to Papaw.
26. Why did the writer display the repaired teacup
A. To show her repair skills. B. To make her collection bigger.
C. To beautify its broken parts. D. To honor its profound influence.
27. What is the story mainly about
A A fascination with teacups. B. A life-changing gift.
C. An appreciation for family. D. A love-bonding interest.
C
“Rubbish is immortal,” wrote Czech author Ivan Klima in his novel Love and Garbage. “What else is there that is so indestructible ” And even as we make the world into a greener place by embracing renewable energy, the problem of how to deal with waste remains a difficult one to solve.
The thing is, renewable energy tools like wind turbines (涡轮机) do a lot of good, but they also need replacing and recycling when they get old. Many of the parts can be melted down and used again, but this comes at a cost to the environment, because the process produces carbon emissions. Luckily, experts have been working on ways to use these giant turbines again at the end of their lives.
Old blades (叶片) have been used as noise barriers next to roads, as bike sheds, and as children’s playground equipment. And some of the stems — or nacelles, as the parts that contain the engines are known-have even been used for housing.
Last year, a Swedish energy company called Vattenfall and Dutch firm Blade-Made worked together to create a tiny home made from a decommissioned turbine. Shown during Dutch Design Week in 2024, it’s 4 meters wide, 10 meters long and 3 meters high and according to CNN is “surprisingly light and airy” thanks to glass doors at either end. Crucially, it also agreed with Dutch building rules.
But with more and more turbines expected to be replaced in the coming years, could they really help to solve housing crises Jos de Krieger is a co-founder of Blade-Made, and he says, “Why not ” His company, along with its collaborators, is planning to create 10 tiny homes using turbines. He told CNN that making old turbines into homes is “the most complex thing you can do,” but now it’s been done, anything is possible. “We need solutions,” he said, adding that he wants to “create stories, instead of waste.” Klima would surely approve.
28. What aspect of wind turbines does the passage focus on
A. Their high cost of production. B. Their new uses after retirement.
C. Their role in reducing carbon emissions. D. Their contribution to greener housing.
29. How can old turbine blades be dealt with
A. Burned for fuel. B. Used as road barriers.
C. Thrown away safely. D. Applied as playing facilities.
30. What does the word “decommissioned” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Out-of-use. B. Up-to-date. C. Very expensive. D. Fully repaired.
31. What can we infer from Jos de Krieger’s words
A. He needs to create stories for Bland-Made.
B. He does the job to win approval from Klima.
C. He has doubts about whether the idea will work.
D. He hopes to expand the business in turbine houses.

An increasingly popular market in China for “outsourced children” — services where strangers are hired as “temporary children” to care for elderly people living alone — is sparking debate over the lack of regulation and potential legal risks.
While more than 310 million Chinese were aged 60 or older by the end of 2024, official data show that more than half now live apart from their children. In some major cities and rural areas, the share tops 70%, fueling demand for companionship services.
In the northeastern city of Dalian, one popular group offering “outsourced children” services began with nine friends. Peng Lei, the group’s organizer, said the team went with seniors to medical appointments, helped with shopping, and provided companionship. The group went viral in July after posting a video of themselves visiting nursing homes. Within two months, membership had grown to more than 1,000, with new branches opening in other provinces.
Peng stated that most clients found them through social media or referrals from friends and are usually the children of elderly parents living elsewhere. The team signs authorization letters before providing services and typically charges 200 to 500 yuan based on specialized support, ranging from hospital visits to grocery shopping.
On the microblogging platform Weibo, opinions are sharply divided. Supporters see “outsourced children” as a market-driven fix for gaps in elderly care, while critics warn of untrained providers and potential property disputes (纠纷).
Zhao Jingwu, an associate law professor at Beihang University, told The Legal Daily that if the elderly, out of gratitude, made property gifts or drafted wills, it could trigger disputes with their children. He also noted that authorities should step in with clearer rules and supportive policies to guide the industry, which could help fill gaps in China’s elderly care system. He suggested limiting untrained practitioners to companionship, while allowing those with medical expertise to provide basic health services.
32. Who are “outsourced children”
A. Children living with the old. B. Doctors working in villages.
C. People hired to support seniors. D. Nurses arranged for the disabled.
33. What can we learn about Peng Lei’s group
A. It operates only in Dalian. B. It started small but grew fast.
C. It refuses social media users. D. It mainly serves rich families.
34. What is Zhao Jingwu’s opinion about the industry
A. It’s promising but requires official guidance.
B. It’s successful but has caused family conflicts.
C. Seniors should make property gifts out of gratitude.
D. Medical professionals can provide the best service.
35. Which is the best title for the passage
A. A Social Trend Towards Outsourced Care B. A Growing Market for Companionship Services
C. Families Seek New Ways to Support the Elderly D. Outsourced Children Step into an Ageing Society

It all began one ordinary afternoon in world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new group project. We were asked to create a newspaper about the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we each wrote down the names of three friends we hoped to work with. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B said she would consider our choices and announce the groups the next day. I had no doubt that I would be with my best friend. We had chosen each other.
The next day, after the bell rang, Mrs. B called for our attention and started to read out the group lists. When she reached group three, my best friend’s name was called, followed by three others—but not mine. There had to be some mistakes!
Then I heard my name in the last group—with Linn, who always kept to herself, Marsha, who had just transferred to our school from South Africa, and Jeremy, who spoke typical Japanese English!
Tears welled up in my eyes. How could I face being in a group with “the invisible”! I just wanted to be with my friends.
Fighting back tears, I walked up to Mrs. B She seemed to know what I was going to say. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why ” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder, “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I’m counting on you to help them do the job well. Only you can.” She looked into my eyes and continued, “Get to know them, and you might be surprised at what they can do.”
I was stunned, humbled, and deeply moved. “So, will you help them ” she asked. “Since you trust me, let me try,” I replied.

【原文】Doctor Jane Goodall, born in London in 1934, is a world-famous scientist known for her lifelong work with chimpanzees. She developed a deep fascination with animals from a young age, which shaped her entire career. In 1960, at age 26, Jane stepped into the forests in Africa for the first time. There, through years of patient observation, she discovered that chimpanzees could make and use tools. She also recorded their social behaviors, including emotions, family bonds and even conflicts. Beyond her research, Jane became a global advocate for conservation. In 1977 she founded the Jane Goodall Institute to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. She also launched the Roots and Shoots program in 1991, encouraging youth to engage in projects about the environment and animals. As U.N. messenger of peace, she travelled worldwide to give talks about conservation, poverty and climate change. In one of her speeches, she said, “Each of you has a role to play. You may not know it now, but your life matters and you are here for a reason. I just hope that reason will become apparent as you live through your life. Every single day you live, you make a difference in the world, and you get to choose the difference that you make.” Jane Goodall died peacefully in her sleep on October first in 2025.

【答案】24. C 25. D 26. D 27. B

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. D

Challenging, fun and engaging hobbies have the power to make us happier and healthier. ____36____ Here is how you can start and discover things you don’t yet know you’ll like.

【答案】例文
Dear Jim,
Glad to hear you’re planning an activity to help us relieve study pressure. I totally agree with this idea as it’s really necessary for us to relax ourselves.
For the activity, I have two suggestions. First, team sports like volleyball or basketball would be a great choice, since sports play a significant part in releasing stress, which has been proved by scientists. Second, a talent show where we can show what we are good at, such as singing, dancing or magic tricks, would also be wonderful, allowing us to have fun and forget about study worries for a while.
I hope these suggestions are helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
I gathered them to discuss how to finish our job. I started by encouraging them to share their thoughts. Linn had a deep understanding of the cultural details, Marsha brought unique insights from her South African background, and Jeremy’s knowledge of Japanese culture was impressive. We divided the tasks based on everyone’s strengths. Every time we met, we communicated actively, and the initial awkwardness gradually turned into a harmonious collaboration. To our surprise, the newspaper we created was graded A.
The real success of our group wasn’t just the A we received. It was the friendships we built and the lessons we learned. I got to know Linn, Marsha, and Jeremy beyond my initial impressions. We started hanging out after school, sharing stories from our different cultures. Mrs. Bartlett’s decision taught me not to judge people by their appearance. This project made me realize that diversity can bring unexpected strengths, and stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to wonderful surprises.
