Spring Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China.It is a time for family reunion.Over the years,the ways to celebrate Spring Festival have changed,but the heart of the celebration remains unchanged.
During my grandparents'childhood,Spring Festival was quite different.
Before the festival arrived,people bought food with special tickets.On the eve of the festival,families came together to have a big dinner.On Chinese New Year's Day and throughout the holiday,children enjoyed wearing new clothes.
When my parents were young,many young adults left their hometown to work in cities,but they all tried to return home from near and far for the traditional family gatherings.While most families enjoyed the big dinner at home,some
families chose to celebrate it in restaurants.After dinner,watching the Spring
Festival Gala on TV became a new tradition.Children usually received hongbao (red packets)from parents and grandparents as gifts.When midnight came,
fireworks lit up the night skies and everybody cheered “Happy New Year!”.
As for our generation,the digital age has brought more changes to the traditional celebrations.These days,some families choose to travel during the holiday.
When this happens,they can“get together”with their relatives through video calls and watch the Gala online.People also send best wishes and red packets through apps.Fireworks are not as popular as before because of air pollution, but people still stay up late.
In short,our ways to celebrate Spring Festival have changed over time,but the spirit of family togetherness remains the same.The festival is still about bringing families together and wishing everybody a happier and better future ahead.
