The Olympic Games have a long history. The first Olympic Games took place in ancient Greece in 776 BCE. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. They were not as big as the Olympics today. Only 311 athletes from 14 countries took part, and there were fewer events than in the present-day Olympics. Still, for the late 19th century, the 1896 Olympics were a great success. Ever since then, the competition has become more and more popular.

The Olympic rings are the symbol of the Olympics. These five coloured rings symbolise the union of the five continents, and the meeting of athletes from around the world at the Olympic Games.

The first Olympic motto was "Faster, Higher, Stronger". These three words encourage athletes to do their best during the competition. In 2021, "together" was added to the Olympic motto. It now reads "Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together". The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach explained, "We can only go faster, we can only aim higher, we can only become stronger by standing together." This is the purpose of the Olympic Games: to make the world a better, more peaceful place through sport.
