A
(2025·郑州高三质量检测) I've always been really passionate about science and how things work. Then, slowly, as I grew up, that curiosity started to develop into something more. Growing up in Ethiopia, I always thought people were always getting hit by the hot sun working outside. I didn't think much of it when I was really little, but as I grew up, I realized how big of an issue skin cancer really was. Not only in Ethiopia but everywhere around the world.
And when people do end up getting skin cancer, it's crazily expensive to treat and not affordable in the slightest. Skin cancer does have cures and skin cancer is treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally is almost $40,000.When I heard those really shocking statistics, it really inspired me to create a more affordable and accessible solution. I started doing experiments and working on different things, and then that turned into my bar of soap as a project.
A lot of my research and development started in my family's kitchen and in my basement. Of course, I wasn't doing any serious microparticle generation or anything like that—I was just going through the soap-making process. All it really requires is an emulsifier (乳化剂),some bases and a couple of chemicals. So I was able to do that all relatively safely and efficiently just from my house.
But as I became a finalist at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, I realized that I did need to do a little bit more outside of just my house. So I reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and I got a lot of assistance. The Number One person who helped me would be Deborah Isabelle, my 3M designated mentor (导师).She helped organize and structure my thoughts and she had so much experience in the field of R&D.I definitely couldn't have done this all by myself.
1.What inspired the author to start his soap project?( )
A.His curiosity about chemistry.
B.The high cost of skin cancer treatment.
C.His suffering from skin cancer.
D.The working conditions in the US.
2.What can be inferred about the author's basement products?( )
A.They sold pretty well. B.They were labor-intensive.
C.They posed health risks. D.They were not fully developed.
根据第三段中的“A lot of my research and development started in my family's kitchen and in my basement. Of course, I wasn't doing any serious microparticle generation or anything like that—I was just going through the soap making process.”
3.Why did the author reach out to other people as a finalist?( )
A.To learn how to make soap.
B.To find a place to experiment.
C.To get professional assistance.
D.To share his knowledge in soap-making.
根据最后一段中的“But as I became a finalist at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, I realized that I did need to do a little bit more outside of just my house. So I reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and I got a lot of assistance.”
4.Where is this text most probably taken from?( )
A.An interview. B.A book review.
C.An advertisement. D.A science fiction.
答案:A
根据第一段“I've always been really passionate about science and how things work. Then, slowly, as I grew up, that curiosity started to develop into something more...but as I grew up, I realized how big of an issue skin cancer really was. Not only in Ethiopia but everywhere around the world.”、第二段中的“However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally is almost $40,000..., and then that turned into my bar of soap as a project.” 故选A。

(2025·江西赣州第三次模拟卷) For Mireille Kamariza, a graduate student at one of the world's top universities, the fight against tuberculosis (TB) (结核病), which sickens nearly 10 million people a year, is not just about scientific progress and reputation. It's personal.
Kamariza grew up in the small African country of Burundi, where many around her were stricken with TB.In Burundi, it's rare for girls to attend college.
“Science was something that Europeans and Americans did,” she says. “It was for other people—not for me.” “I never dreamt Kamariza would become a scientist because it is a career path that is unknown in Burundi,” says Denise Sinankwa, Kamariza's mother. She and her husband were raising four kids, and Sinankwa often did multiple jobs to feed the family. But Sinankwa still pushed Kamariza to do well in school. She wanted her daughter to land a good-paying job and be able to support herself.
When Kamariza was 17, she went to San Diego, US, in the fall of 2006 with her brothers. They took various jobs at grocery stores, restaurants and shops. At San Diego Mesa College, she met Saloua Saidane, her chemistry teacher, who was a fellow French-speaking African. “She started my journey into science. She really pushed me and kept motivating me and telling me I should aim high. Whatever she told me, I did,” says Kamariza. She is now a graduate student at Stanford University.
Kamariza wanted to focus on infectious disease. So she started brainstorming with her partner, another graduate student, to figure out a quicker way to diagnose TB.They eventually came up with a new test that recognises a sugar, called trehalose, which is only found in TB bacteria (细菌). Current TB tests take a lot of time and effort and are not very sensitive—some infections are missed. TB cultures are more reliable but take six weeks to produce a result. Kamariza's methods could make TB diagnoses simpler and more accurate.
In 2018, Harvard offered Kamariza a position in its Society of Fellows. “I'm the first black woman biologist at the society,” she says. “At that point, it's not about me any more. It's what I represent.”
5.What can we infer about Denise Sinankwa?( )
A.She once got infected with TB.
B.She dreamt about being a scientist.
C.She valued her daughter's education.
D.She encouraged her kids to study science.
根据第二段中“But Sinankwa still pushed Kamariza to do well in school. She wanted her daughter to land a good paying job and be able to support herself.”
6.What does Kamariza say about Saloua Saidane?( )
A.Saidane had a big influence on her.
B.Saidane seldom spoke highly of her.
C.Saidane had unrealistic expectations.
D.Saidane was unfriendly to her students.
答案:A
根据第三段“‘She started my journey into science. She really pushed me and kept motivating me and telling me I should aim high. Whatever she told me, I did,’ says Kamariza.” 故选A。
7.Why did Kamariza work with her partner?( )
A.To shorten the time used to cure TB.
B.To produce more reliable TB cultures.
C.To develop a faster test to diagnose TB.
D.To figure out the bacteria leading to TB.
根据第四段中“So she started brainstorming with her partner, another graduate student, to figure out a quicker way to diagnose TB.”
8.What can we learn from Kamariza's experience?( )
A.Luck often plays a vital part in scientific research.
B.We should pursue our passions despite difficulties.
C.Hard work does not necessarily pay off eventually.
D.Scientific progress and the reputation matter equally.
根据最后一段中“‘I'm the first black woman biologist at the society,’ she says. ‘At that point, it's not about me any more. It's what I represent.’”
