We use the past continuous tense to talk about things that were happening at a particular time in the past. We form the past continuous tense like this:___________ + v-ing.

Suzy: There was an accident near our school at 4:10 yesterday
afternoon. It happened as we were going home from school.
Amy: I know. I saw it while I was riding my bike home. It was raining when the police arrived.
Suzy: I didn’t see it. I hope no one was badly hurt.

过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻正在进行的动作或过去某一阶段一直在进行的动作。
Tom was playing football at that time.
They were watching TV at 2:30 p.m yesterday.

二、过去进行时的句式结构
肯定句 主语+was/were+ 现在分词(+ 其他). e.g. I was doing my homework at eight last night.
昨晚八点我在做我的作业。
否定句 主语+was/were+not/wasn’t/weren’t + 现在分词(+ 其他). e.g. I wasn’t helping my father in the garden at this time yesterday. 昨天这个时间,我没有在花园里帮爸爸干活。
一、过去进行时的构成
过去进行时句子中的谓语部分由“was/were+ 现在分词” 构成,与现在进行时结构相似,只是把现在进行时中的am/is/
are 变成了was/were。
一般 疑问句 —Was/Were+ 主语+ 现在分词(+ 其他)? —Yes, 主格代词+was/ were./ No, 主格代词+wasn’t/weren’t. e.g.—Were you doing housework at that time 那时你在做家务吗?
—Yes, I was./No, I wasn’t. 是的,我在做。/ 不,我没在做。
特殊 疑问句 特殊疑问词(不作主语)+ was/were + 主语+ 现在分词(+ 其他) / 特殊疑问词(作主语)+was/ were+ 现在分词(+其他)? e.g. What were you reading this morning 今天上午你在读什么?
Who was playing basketball here last night 昨天晚上谁在这里打篮球?
三、时间状语
过去进行时表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作以及过去某一阶段
一直在进行的动作,常与表示过去的具体时间等连用如:this morning,
the whole morning, all day, from nine to ten, last evening, at that time,
at this time yesterday, at 9 last night, at that moment。或者在when,
while, as引导的时间状语从句中使用。
过去进行时和一般过去时的区别:
1.过去进行时:强调过去某一时刻或时间段内正在进行或持续的动作。
e.g. He was playing basketball at three yesterday afternoon.
昨天下午三点他正在打篮球。
2.一般过去时:表示动作发生在过去,且往往已经完成。
e.g. He played basketball yesterday afternoon.
昨天下午他打篮球了。

When, while and as can be used as conjunctions of time. They all mean “during the time that...”.
I was working when the earthquake started.
People were running in all directions while pieces of glass and bricks were raining down.
As I was trying to find my way out, I suddenly heard some noise above me.
When a shorter action happened at the same time as a longer action, we use the past continuous tense for the longer action and the simple past tense for the shorter action. When there are two long actions, we often use while.
Using while, when and as
We were watching in fear while the firemen were putting out the fire.
If the shorter action is in the main clause, we can use when, while or as to join the clauses.
When/While/As Millie was watching TV, the lightning hit her building.
If the longer action is in the main clause, we often use when to join the clauses.
Millie was watching TV when the lightning hit a nearby building.
语法精讲
when, while和as 用作从属连词,都有“当……的时候”之意,引导时间状语从句,它们的用法和区别如下:
1)when, while和as这三个词均有“当……时候”的意思
There were fewer sandstorms when my grandparents were young.
我祖父母年轻时沙尘暴要少些。
While Millie was watching TV, her mum was sleeping.
米莉在看电视时她妈妈在睡觉。
I saw a traffic accident as I was riding to school this morning.
今天早晨我骑车上学时看见一起交通事故。
While, when, as 的用法
2)when和as既可以指某一点时间,也可以指某一段时间,其从句谓语动词表示的动作既可以是瞬间性的,也可以是延续性的;while指一段时间,从句中的谓语动词必须是延续性的。
即:指一段时间时,when,while和as都可用;
指一点时间时,只能用when或as,不能用while。
试比较:
When/As he woke up, it was eight o'clock. ( √)
While he woke up, it was eight o'clock. ( × )
When/While/As I was waiting for a bus, I met her. ( √ )
3)when引导的从句的谓语动作可以在主句谓语动作之前,之后或同时发生;While和as引导的从句的谓语动作必须是和主句谓语动作同时发生。
When he finished his homework,he played the computer games for a while.
当他完成作业后,他玩了会儿电脑游戏。(finished先发生)
When I got to the museum, the door was closed.(got to后发生)
While/As I was sleeping, the telephone rang.(was sleeping 和rang同时发生)
4)当主句、从句动作同时发生且主句动作为瞬间动作,从句动作为延续性动词时, when、while和as都可使用。
When/While/As we were reading,a stranger came in.当我们正在看书时,一位陌生人走了进来。(read为延续性动词)
5)强调过去的两个动作同时进行(主句与从句均为延续性动词),常用“过去进行时+while+过去进行时”结构。如:
They were rowing boats while we were climbing the hill.
当我们在爬山时,他们在划船。
6)强调某个动作发生的时候,另一个动作正在进行,常用“一般过去时+while/
when/as+过去进行时”结构。如:
It began to rain heavily while/when /as we were having dinner.我们在吃晚饭时,开始下起大雨。
7)强调某个动作正在进行时,另一个动作突然发生,常用“过去进行时+
when+一般过去时”结构。如:
I was walking in the street when he called me.我正在街上走时,他突然喊我。
9)在将来时从句中,常用when,且从句须用一般时代替将来时。
When the manager comes here for a visit next week, I’ll talk with him about this.
下周经理来这参观时,我会和他谈谈此事。

Write about an emergency or a natural disaster that happened in your hometown,
or one you heard about, using the past continuous tense.
Last July, a bad rainstorm came to my hometown. I remember what I was doing when it started.
It was 3 p.m. I was in my bedroom doing my math homework. The sky got very dark. Suddenly, strong winds blew. My little sister was watching TV in the living room. She cried because the wind was loud. My mom was cooking in the kitchen. She turned off the stove and closed the windows fast.
The rain fell harder and harder. It hit the roof with big noises. My dad was calling grandma to check if she was safe. She was at her house nearby alone.
While we waited, the lights went out. We were a little scared but stayed calm. Mom lit candles. We sat together and told stories until the rain got lighter.
The storm stopped at 7 p.m. We went outside. Some trees were on the road, and bikes were knocked over. But everyone was okay. It was scary, but I learned we need to stay together in hard times.
