Armor made with 8,000 copper coins gets patent (专利) In ancient times, copper coins meant wealth. Linking the copper coins one by one had the good meaning of collecting wealth. As a traditional skill in China, copper coin knitting (铜钱编织) was listed as an intangible cultural heritage. An old villager, Zhang Canjin, comes from Ningbo. He is the inheritor (继承人) of copper coin knitting. “Knitting the coins into different shapes doesn’t sound difficult, but the key is to be creative and think big,” Zhang said. To try something challenging, Zhang spent two months making armor with more than 8,000 coins. It got great public attention and even got Zhang a national patent for design. This also gave him more confidence. Now, he tries to continue getting more creative ideas and hopes the art form will reach more people.
_____________________ Single bamboo drifting (独竹漂), an intangible cultural heritage passed from generation to generation among the people in Guizhou Province, has been performed for more than 2,000 years. Yang Liu, a 25-year-old “water fairy” from Zunyi, Guizhou, dancing on the river in traditional Chinese costume, is an inheritor of single bamboo drifting. For over ten years, combining drifting with dancing, Yang has put fresh energy into this traditional art. It’s not easy to stand, let alone dance on a single bamboo. So not surprisingly, Yang has experienced countless falls and failures. Thanks to her efforts, though, single bamboo drifting has gotten great fame on the Internet and become well-known in the world.
Shedding light on Chinese shadow puppetry Students control shadow puppets (皮影木偶) as the singing voice of 71-year-old Liu Aibang echoes across the classroom. They use thin straight pieces of wood to make shadow puppets step onto the “stage” — a cloth screen. Those sitting in front of the stage play music on drums, suona horns (唢呐) and other instruments. This is a Daoqing shadow puppetry class at Longdong University. Except Liu, the other performers of the show are all college students.
Starting in the Han Dynasty, Daoqing shadow puppetry has been included in the national intangible cultural heritage list. Liu hopes to train more young people. “Just as true love is not a one-man show, the learning and keeping of cultural heritage needs efforts from both the old and the young,” Liu said.

I need to arrive at work at 6:00 a. m., which means I have to leave my house at 5:00 a. m. Yes, it is quite difficult to wake up at 4:30 a. m. Our company sent drivers to pick up workers from their homes before 5:30 a. m. But since we don’t have dependable cars, drivers end up having to drive around to pick up the fifteen people.
A middle-aged worker always arrives at the office early. He usually gets picked first by the drivers. Since he usually travels at the same time, he happens to know the addresses of most of the workmates. So he ends up helping the drivers pick up the rest workmates. He is patient to direct the taxi drivers while also to call each workmate that the taxi is a few minutes away from their residence.
Yesterday, I was wondering how this person can do it every day, even though it’s neither part of his job, nor giving him any added advantage. Suddenly I came up with a very unusual idea that I had never done before. I thought, “This is a person who should be given a thank-you note, and maybe a gift.” So I just wrote a card to him yesterday evening, telling him that he has a great attitude and that all the workmates really admire his act of service. Then, I put the note in a box, along with some chocolates.
Today, when I was supposed to hand my box to him, I was confused and felt a little afraid over me. Maybe it was because I had never spoken to him or I was not certain about how he would act — whether he would doubt my purpose. However, when he was getting out of the taxi, I thought, “I know my purpose is good, and that’s the reason why I should give it to him. What he thinks of it is his own decision. I should do what I feel is right.” So, with my heart beating fast, I handed the box to him. And now I feel happy. Maybe I made someone’s day today.

The stone walls, the yard, clothes hung on a clothes line… At first sight, you may think they’re real. But in fact, you’ve actually fallen down a rabbit hole of miniatures (微观模型) of Chinese traditional houses in the 1990s made by a miniature artist. Feng Jiangtao, 32, has made more than 40 miniatures for people around the country to reproduce the old houses that carry their memories.
In April 2021, Feng made a miniature of an old shop in his hometown. It had black tiles (瓦片), grey walls and a small TV playing cartoons. Feng then posted a video of this miniature online, which soon went viral. People around the country who watched the video with familiar feelings for their old houses got in touch with him, asking him to make house models according to the photos they provided.
Making miniatures is not an easy job. It usually takes Feng about 10 days to finish one miniature. He makes them in a ratio (比例) of 1:30 to the real size. To better remake the old house, he uses real building materials, such as cement (水泥), wood, and soil and then focuses on how to make it look old.
★ . One of his customers, a post-90s girl, once asked him to reproduce an old house in her hometown. She used to live there with her parents. She wanted to give the model to her mother to keep alive the memory of her deceased (过世的) father.
