It all started when then 16-year-old Boyan Slat was scuba diving (水肺潜水) in Greece and was surprised to see more plastic than fish. The question “Why don’t we just clean it up ” stayed in his mind, and led him to devote his high school science project to understanding the problem.
After a year of experimenting, Boyan came up with the idea to use the ocean currents to his advantage, and let them be the driving force behind catching and collecting the plastic. Instead of going after the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.
Initially, his idea did not gain attention. He decided to quit his studies and founded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 euros of savings as a starting capital.
Then one night in March 2013, things changed. He spoke on TEDx about this project. The TEDx video spread to hundreds of thousands of people. In a matter of days, an initial team was built, and it raised the first USD 90,000. The project took off.
Their early models had their share of failures — plastic slipping through, parts breaking off in the ocean. But they kept at it. In 2019, System 001/B finally worked. Then came System 002, which in 2021 gathered 20,000 pounds of ocean waste. Now they launched the Interceptor: a solar-powered system designed to catch plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. So far, Interceptors have been used in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and Los Angeles — with more on the way.
Boyan Slat’s journey is a powerful reminder that innovation, passion, and determination can lead to significant change. His work to clean up the oceans has made a lasting impact on the world and serves as an inspiration for others to take action on environmental issues.

In a strawberry field surrounded by strawberry fields on the outskirts of Santa Maria, a pair of robots have been picking berries all summer.
Each robot, made by a Colorado company called Tortuga AgTech, rolls in the field on wheels, then stops in front of a plant. A mechanical arm operates its sensor (传感器) among the leaves; machine sight software scans the sensor data in search of grown-up berries. If an unready berry is in the way, the robot relocates for a better position. A snipper-grabber (夹爪) mounted in the middle of the sensors extends to cut the berry's stem (茎), then carefully places it in a waiting plastic container at the robot's base.
Tortuga's robots are designed to pick strawberries from plants grown on hydroponic (水培的) tabletops, not the ground strawberries. The tabletop system enables Tortuga's strawberry robots to work by making berries easier to be picked up with robotic arms and protecting the robots from direct exposure to disadvantageous elements.
Since hitting this field last spring, the robots are on their way to picking nearly as many berries as human pickers, and with 95% correctness, according to Tortuga. Unlike a human, the Tortuga robots don't need breaks, can't get sick, are always ready to work and can pick all day and into the night. With human-work making up so much of a grower's cost, the allure of a robot's increased dependability and potential to become more cost-efficient over time is hard to refuse.
"I do think the best humans are going to be able to outperform robots at these judgment-driver tasks," said Eric Adamson, Tortuga's cofounder and general manager. "But that's OK. It doesn't have to be better than every human, it just has to be better than enough humans."
Meanwhile, the team behind Tortuga sees agricultural robots as more than workforce-saving devices. They see them as the only way that an industry facing climate change, land use and chemical regulation can adapt and survive.

It’s far from the storybook picture of a farm — no mud, no boots, no hens pecking in the yard. Unlike conventional farms, this high-tech facility operates without soil, heavy machinery, or pesticides. Instead, it relies on automation and advanced plant science to maximize output. The entire process — from planting seeds to packaging produce — is automated. From the moment a worker tips seeds into the sowing machine, robots take over. Nearly 80 plant scientists study best growing conditions for each plant, working with over 100 engineers who translate these findings into hardware and software solutions.
“Plants are really just little software programs,” explains one of the scientists. By studying plant DNA without changing it, scientists can program qualities like growth, flavor, and nutrition. For instance, exposing plants to blue light at specific growth cycles creates leaves with a satisfying crunch at harvest. The same principles can enhance antioxidant levels in vegetables by up to 40%. Since crops never contact soil, pesticides, or human hands, they require no washing — reducing both water waste and contamination risks.
One of the greatest threats to the natural world is habitat loss due to farmland expansion. If successful, farms like this could reduce deforestation while meeting food demands. Yet the high costs — including energy-intensive artificial lighting — may block global adoption, particularly in developing nations where infrastructure is limited.
