In 2004 Khan offered to tutor his 12-year-old cousin Nadia, who was struggling with math. The tutoring classes continued over the phone, and soon he realized how essential personalized learning was for students. Eventually, he found himself tutoring around 15 cousins. However, scheduling challenges pushed him to adopt a more scalable approach. In 2006, Khan began recording tutorial videos and uploading them to YouTube, allowing learners to access the material at their own pace. As things started getting out of hand, he decided to create a website for them to practice problems, using Yahoo Doodle for visualizing calculations during phone sessions.
The transition to internet videos occurred two years later when a friend questioned the scalability of Khan’s lessons. While he was initially skeptical about YouTube, Khan eventually tried making tutorial videos. To his surprise, the format gained popularity, with his cousins telling him that they preferred the online explanations more. The demand grew, reaching a broader audience, and by 2008, he was teaching tens of thousands of learners each month.
Khan started recording his educational videos in a makeshift “studio” at his home, specifically in a closet. The setup consisted of a $900 desktop from Best Buy, a $200 microphone, a pen tablet from Amazon, and screen capture software. In this humble space, Khan drew on an art program on his computer while providing explanations into the microphone.
Around 2009, Khan made the decision to leave his job to dedicate himself full-time to building the Khan Academy. In September 2010, Khan Academy secured substantial grants, including $2 million from Google and $1.5 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. If you check the webpage of Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), you will find a list of actions and conditions that can be qualified as cruelty to animals. The list includes such points as torturing or beating an animal; failing to provide it with food and appropriate treatment in case of disease or injury; killing an animal in an inhumane manner; failing to provide appropriate transportation conditions, and so on. As can be noticed, cruelty to animals is defined based on specific criteria that allow us to evaluate the way an animal is treated.
According to statistics, animals who suffer from cruelty most often are dogs (64.5%) and cats (18%). 25% are for other animals, such as horses (The Humane Society). Supposedly, it means domestic pets are the most vulnerable category to suffer from cruelty; also, it might mean cruelty towards animals is a result of pet owners demonstrating their anger, frustration, or stress on the closest and most defenseless creatures.
Undoubtedly, there are people who mistreat animals because of their own misfortunes, twisted personalities, mental illnesses, ignorance, or indifference. According to the American Psychiatric Association, animal cruelty is “one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder.” The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) defines conduct disorder as “a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated.” In practice, it means animal abusers — those who treat animals cruelly — are likely to commit certain forms of crime and abuse towards people as well, which is a disturbing sign for sure.
Given the serious consequences of animal cruelty for both animals and society, it is urgent that we take action. Stricter laws, increased public awareness, and educational programs are needed to address this issue. By safeguarding the well-being of animals, we not only protect innocent lives but also contribute to building a more compassionate and harmonious world.

Scientists from China have created a truly remarkable robot hand! Named the “F-TAC Hand”, it was developed by researchers from Peking University and the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, and their exciting work was just published in the famous science journal Nature Machine Intelligence on June 9th, 2025.
What makes this robotic hand so special It can feel and adjust its grip just like a human hand can. The secret lies in its amazing touch sensors. Covering 70% of the hand’s surface, these tiny sensors — packed as densely (密集地) as 10,000 per square centimeter — let the hand feel textures, pressure, and any tiny movement of the object it’s holding. Crucially, these sensors are built right into the hand’s structure, so they don’t make the hand stiff or clumsy. A smart computer program uses this constant touch feedback to instantly decide the best way to grip different objects, just like our brains tell our hands what to do.
Beyond its amazing ability to mimic human touch, the F-TAC Hand also brings practical solutions to real-world problems in robotics. It’s inspired by how our own hands and nerves work. The F-TAC Hand isn’t just cool science; it has real uses.
