It is hard to imagine a place that’s more dangerous than Death Valley. Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America.
Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two inches of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, temperature often reaches over 46 ℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
Although the weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, it is still filled with lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives here. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from flowers.
Death Valley really creates a lot of surprising!
( ) 62. Death Valley gets ______ of rain a year.
A. two feet B. fifty-one feet
C. at least two feet D. less than two inches
( ) 63. The most difficult thing in Death Valley is to find ______.

( ) 65. What can we infer from the passage
A. The writer dislikes Death Valley.
B. Some animals are large in Death Valley.
C. The plants do not have long roots.
D. Rocks sometimes move in the afternoon.
D
Teenagers should be allowed to develop a hobby. A hobby can give you different types of challenges. You’ll need to find different interests and decide which hobby really interests you. You can take up a hobby that can challenge you physically, such as rock climbing or surfing. However, this may be hard to do. Here are four great reasons for it.
Hobbies help build a teenager’s confidence. By finding an area of interest, a teenager can build his skill. This leads to positive results and builds his confidence.
A hobby helps a teen have a sense of his identity(身份). Our likes and dislikes help us know who we are as people. Hobbies help by sending a signal, “I like doing this. This makes me feel good. Therefore, this is a part of who I am.”
Hobbies keep teenagers from getting bored. Bored teenagers look for things to do and are more likely to do something bad. Helping teenagers develop a hobby is helping them stay out of trouble.
Hobbies will help teenagers to get on well with their parents. When a teenager is busy with a hobby, his parents have easy access(机会) to something to praise him for. They can communicate with each other easily.
( ) 66. What will Jim probably feel in his free time if he has a hobby
A. Bored. B. Troubled.
C. Wealthy. D. Happy.
( ) 67. Why will hobbies help teenagers to get on well with their parents
A. Because teens are busy and have no time to fight with parents.
B. Because parents never praise them for their hobbies.
C. Because parents have an interesting topic to talk about with children.
D. Because teens have to ask their parents for some money.
( ) 68. What is the passage mainly about
A. Why it’s not easy to find a hobby.
B. How to develop a hobby.
C. Who we are as people.
D. Why teenagers need a hobby.
E [福建福州期中改编]
Do you sometimes feel different, alone or left out Teenagers don’t usually like to be alone. Simply having to eat alone in the cafeteria is enough to make them feel upset. They are afraid of being called “a loner (独来独往的人)”.
But being a loner doesn’t always mean being strange or disliked. Actually, it has become a lifestyle in many countries among young people who consider being alone to be a part of everyday life.
In South Korea, there are a growing number of people who describe themselves as “honjok”. The word comes from “hon” (alone) and “jok” (group). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves.
In Japan, people have had a strong loner culture over the years. There are solo (单人的) karaoke bars and solo cafés. Ramen (拉面) restaurants for solo diners are especially popular. There are partitions (隔板) between two seats in a line against the wall. Diners can’t see the faces of other people.
Knowing that you are not alone in being alone may make you feel better. But more importantly, you can try to find strength in your aloneness.
Aloneness gives you time to look inside yourself or do other things without distraction (分心). “It’s hard to feel lonely when you’re trying to learn a new skill, practice a hobby, or try out a new recipe (食谱),” wrote US lifestyle writer Adrienne Breaux.
( ) 69. How do teenagers usually feel when they are alone
A. Excited. B. Happy.
C. Sad. D. Angry.
( ) 70. What does honjok refer to in South Korea
A. Solo karaoke bars and solo cafés.
B. Teenagers who like hanging out together.
C. A group of people being alone.
D. People who are afraid of being alone.
( ) 71. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage
( ) 72. What’s the best title of this passage
A. Downsides of Being Alone
B. Real Loners in Different Countries
C. Asian Cultures Among Youth
D. Aloneness in a Good Way

In Chizhou, schools have 15-minute breaks and one P.E. class every day. Students must do at least two hours of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.

X. 范文:
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the English Channel of Sunshine School! Today we’ll talk about hobbies.
My favourite hobby is reading. I have been reading books since I was six years old. At first, I was worried about falling behind in class, but books helped me improve. As soon as I opened a book, I entered a wonderful world. From then on, reading became my best friend.
Reading not only brings me joy but also helps me grow. It teaches me new words, improves my writing, and makes me think deeply. I believe hobbies can change our lives.
Thank you for listening!
