In 2021, my 68-year-old mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病). By January 2023, she’d lost her ability to complete everyday tasks. She was set on staying in her home and resisted the in-home care. I guessed it was because of what it represented: the acceptance of a disease that would slowly rob her of her memories and the ability to take care of herself.
We had to make the hard choice of finding her a nursing home for her safety and well-being. But we knew she wouldn’t be interested. So, we made up an excuse, telling her that it was an opportunity to spend the winter near my brother in sunny Florida while living at an apartment we had arranged for her.
My mum wasn’t the soft, affectionate mother I often longed for. She had never shown or talked about her feelings, but she was a great example of a hard-working, independent, entrepreneurial woman. My brother and I both have our own businesses, which is something she showed us was possible.
Since her diagnosis, watching her battle with accepting what was happening to her was heartbreaking, but I also felt closer to her when she began to express and share her feelings with me like a kid.
My brother arrived to meet us and we were shown to her apartment. A small kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and two bedrooms — one for her, and one for me and my brother to stay in when we visited. She seemed happy during moving in. For the next 10 days, I lived with her there. We went to meals together, reviewed the activity schedule, and I dropped her off and picked her up like a child at school.
The day came when I had to fly home, and I cried. As I shifted from being her daughter to being more like her parent, I realized how hard being a mother can be.
24.Why might the author’s mother resist in-home care
A.She preferred living alone.
B.She disliked the caregivers.
C.She feared losing independence.
D.She intended to move to Florida.
25.How did the author and her brother convince their mother to move to the nursing home
A.They told her a white lie.
B.They threatened her to go.
C.They offered her a free apartment.
D.They agreed to keep her company.
26.What kind of person was the author’s mother before the diagnosis
A.Talkative and determined. B.Reserved but responsible.
C.Energetic and gentle. D.Creative but cold.
27.How does the author feel after her role change
A.Confused. B.Content.
C.Awkward. D.Appreciative.

A common question in educational psychology has sparked heated discussions in recent years: “If high school teachers often say ‘hard work leads to better jobs and avoids a difficult life like electricians,’ do children from wealthy families still need to study hard ” To address this, a research team from Peking University conducted a 5-year study (2020-2025) involving 2,300 teenagers from families with annual incomes above 1 million yuan across 12 Chinese cities.
The study first analyzed the “motivation gap” between wealthy and non-wealthy students. Surprisingly, 68% of wealthy students reported feeling “pressure to study hard,” but their motivation differed significantly from their peers. Only 12% of wealthy students studied to “find a stable job” (the top motivation for non-wealthy students), while 73% aimed to “gain personal fulfillment” (e.g., mastering a subject they loved) or “maintain family reputation” (e.g., meeting parents’ expectations of attending top universities). The researchers noted that this difference did not mean wealthy students were less hardworking — instead, their “effort direction” was more focused on long-term personal growth rather than short-term financial security.
To test whether “family wealth replaces the need for effort,” the team tracked the academic performance and post-graduation paths of 500 participants. Among those who “reduced study effort” (spending less than 2 hours on homework daily in high school), 82% failed to get into their preferred universities — even with family connections that helped them gain interview opportunities. In contrast, 91% of wealthy students who maintained consistent effort (studying 4+ hours daily and participating in academic competitions) were admitted to top-tier universities or pursued further studies abroad. More importantly, after graduation, the “high-effort” group showed stronger problem-solving skills and adaptability in the workplace:78% of them received promotions within 3 years, compared to only 34% of the “low-effort” group — despite both groups having access to family-provided career resources.
Dr. Li Jia, the study’s lead researcher, emphasized that family wealth acts as a “safety net” rather than a “replacement for effort.” “Wealth can open doors, but it can’t keep them open,” she explained. “A wealthy student might get a job interview through family contacts, but their ability to perform well and keep the job depends on the skills and knowledge gained from hard study. For example, we interviewed a student whose father owns a tech company — he was hired as a project manager after graduation, but he was demoted within 6 months because he lacked the technical expertise to lead the team. His father later admitted that ‘spoon-feeding opportunities without effort only harms his growth.’”
The study also challenged the misunderstanding that “wealthy students study hard only for reputation.” In fact, 45% of the high-effort wealthy students chose majors like environmental science or art history — fields with no direct “financial return” but aligned with their interests. “This shows that their effort is driven by intrinsic motivation, which is more sustainable than external pressure,” Dr. Li added. The research concludes that regardless of family background, hard work remains crucial for personal development and long-term success — wealth may provide advantages, but it cannot compensate for a lack of effort.
28.What is the top motivation for non-wealthy students to study hard
A.Gaining personal fulfillment
B.Finding a stable job
C.Maintaining family reputation
D.Pursuing further studies abroad
29.What can we learn about the “low-effort” wealthy students in the study
A.Most of them failed to enter their ideal universities
B.They spent 4+ hours on homework daily in high school
C.78% of them got promoted within 3 years after graduation
D.They performed better than non-wealthy students in interviews
30.Why was the student with a tech company owner father demoted
A.He refused to follow his father’s advice on work
B.He lacked technical skills from hard study
C.His family’s career resources were not sufficient
D.He was not interested in the project manager position
31.What does the study conclude about family wealth and hard work
A.Wealthy students should focus on majors with high financial returns
B.Family wealth can fully replace the need for hard work in career success
C.Hard work is essential for personal development no matter the family background
D.The main reason wealthy students study hard is to maintain family reputation
D
Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria (细菌) present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come
32.What is special about the trees found in Kenya
A.They absorb more CO2. B.They help turn CO2 into solids.
C.They release oxygen quickly. D.They live in harmony with bacteria.
33.What is the core challenge before applying the discovery globally
A.Assessing the cost of the process. B.Understanding the impact on soil.
C.Quantifying the CO2 transformation. D.Collecting the data on biodiversity.
34.What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs
A.The seriousness of climate change. B.The method of green development.
C.The prospect of scientific approaches. D.The role of nature in climate solutions.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.A defensive Strategy in Nature B.A Recent Advance in CO2 Research
C.Kenyan Trees: A Natural Carbon Lock D.Tree Planting: A Key to Ecological Balance

“Come on, kids! Your father is on the phone,” I shouted to eight-year-old Evan and five-year-old Olivia. However, Evan said he was busy checking on his new football and Olivia ran away to focus on her drawings after just saying hello.
It was just the three of us at home, as it had been for the past three months in 2011. When our family had moved from Puerto Rico to Texas to start the new school year, my husband, Mike, stayed behind to oversee the sale of the company he managed. He visited every weekend, and we kept in touch on the phone, trying to bridge the 2,000 miles between us.
I didn’t like it when Mike wasn’t around us. It was also hard for the kids, especially when they saw their father’s empty seat during the dinnertime. Hearing his voice on the phone just made them quiet and shy.
Mike had suggested downloading the Zoom app onto my computer so that we could have video calls, but I was old-fashioned. I hated screens. Besides, I didn’t think that could make things better.
“Hang on for just one more week,” I told myself as I talked on the phone. “That was the latest end date to our temporary arrangement.”
However, news came in the evening that Mike wouldn’t be home for months as there were problems selling the business. My heart sank. Olivia and Evan cried after hearing the bad news.
I muddled through (勉强度过) the weekdays until Mike got home.
“So you can’t come to my football games ” asked Evan.
“You can tell me all about them on the phone,” Mike said.
“Talking on the phone is boring,” Olivia said. “Why can’t we see each other and talk face to face every day ”
“I know you don’t like screens,” Mike said to me when we were alone, “but can we try it I’ve got what we need if you’ll just go along.”
“What any other choice do I have ” I smiled.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When answering Mike’s first video call, I was worried that the kids would still get shy.

W: Yeah, Johnson. I’ve been reading Robert Frost’s poems. His writing is so simple yet deep. Like in The Road Not Taken, he talks about choices in life using nature as a metaphor. Do you like Frost’s work
M: Definitely. His poems often have a rural setting and explore deep philosophical ideas.
W: Absolutely! How about you What are you reading recently
M: I love Shakespeare’s poems, especially his sonnets. Like Sonnet 18 — Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day — it’s all about love and beauty, but with strict rhyme schemes and iambic pentameter.
W: True! Shakespeare’s language is more complex, with lots of metaphors and classical references. His sonnets often deal with themes like time, love, and immortality. But then there’s Langston Hughes — his poetry is completely different, right
M: Oh yeah! He is a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, and his work is raw and powerful, focusing on African American experiences and social justice.
W: It’s amazing how each poet has a unique voice. Poetry is all about appreciating different styles anyway. Want to exchange some poem recommendations
M: Of course.

I’m writing to tell you an exciting event I attended last Friday — the annual English Singing Competition held at our school. About 20 contestants from different grades participated, each showcasing their unique voices. The crowd cheered wildly, and the judges provided encouraging feedback, highlighting both vocal skills and emotional expression.
What impressed me most was Lily’s performance of You Raise Me Up, a well-known English song. Her soft yet powerful voice with emotions filled the competition hall and reminded me of my parents’ love for me.
How I wish you’d been there! Let me know about your school events!
Yours,
Li Hua

67.One possible version:
When answering Mike’s first video call, I was worried that the kids would still get shy. To my surprise, the moment Mike’s face appeared on screen, Evan and Olivia jumped with delight. They began to laugh as Mike made silly faces and pretended to “steal” their noses through the screen. I watched in amazement as their laughter filled the room — the same joyful chaos we used to have at dinnertime. I even found myself leaning closer to the screen, catching myself smiling at Mike’s familiar expressions.
Over the following months, the kids and I looked forward to the video calls almost each day. We’d set up the computer at the dinner table so Mike could “eat” with us and the kids would excitedly tell him about their day. Evan even started saving his football trophies to display during the video calls, while Olivia would proudly present her completed artworks. Those glowing evening sessions transformed our “boring” phone conversations into heartwarming family moments, making the wait for our real family reunion less painful.
