Generally speaking, an invention is a new product or process that solves a technical(技术的) problem. It is different from a discovery, which is something that is already there but has not been found.
Consider, for example, the telescope (望远镜)and the mountains on the moon. The telescope is an invention created by Hans Lippershey, a Dutch eyeglass maker, in 1608.It was only with the telescope that Galileo Galilei could look far enough into the sky to see the mountains on the moon.
