A Chinese name includes a family name and a given name. Most family names date back to ancient times. They are usually from the names of a village, a state,or an official position. For example,Qi (齐) comes from the state name Qi, and Ouyang (欧阳) is the name of a township.
English names also have two parts: given names and family names. Different from Chinese names, the order is “given name(s)+ family name” Sometimes, people have second or third given names to honour a family member or for other purposes.
English family names are usually from where the family lived, the way they looked,or the kind of work they did. For example, a family living with many trees and plants might take the name Green. If they had dark hair, they were called the Blacks or the Browns. And a person who had a good voice was named Singer.
A given name, either in Chinese or in English, carries the hope of a family for a baby. For example, “Yong” in Chinese and “Andy” in English both mean “brave” ;“Li” in Chinese and “Lily” in English “beautiful”.
It’s about the differences between Chinese and English names.
